Short answer: A DEWALT FLEXVOLT battery can power compatible DEWALT 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, switching voltage automatically when moved between those platforms. Some listed FLEXVOLT packs also support 120V MAX tool configurations. A conventional 20V MAX battery should not be treated as interchangeable with a 60V MAX tool.

FLEXVOLT runtime figures are manufacturer comparisons against the named DCB201 1.5Ah pack, not a universal promise for every tool or workload. Current like-for-like pricing is not established by the official specifications, so the better value depends on your exact tools, capacity needs, kit contents, market and purchase date.

What FLEXVOLT changes compared with a standard 20V MAX battery

A standard 20V MAX battery belongs to the 20V MAX platform. FLEXVOLT is designed as a cross-platform pack: DEWALT says it automatically changes voltage when connected to a compatible tool. That lets one FLEXVOLT pack serve listed 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools instead of requiring separate battery families for those platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The voltage labels need a qualification. DEWALT defines “MAX” voltage as the maximum initial voltage measured without a workload; the voltage under load and the nominal voltage are lower. Therefore, the 20V MAX and 60V MAX names are platform labels, not a promise that the battery delivers those exact voltages continuously during use.

FLEXVOLT does not make every DEWALT battery universally interchangeable. Compatibility is directional: DEWALT documents FLEXVOLT packs for compatible 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools, while ordinary 20V MAX packs are not documented as powering 60V MAX tools. For any purchase, the tool model, battery model and charger model must agree with the manufacturer’s compatibility notes.

Compatibility by platform

Battery or system 20V MAX tools 60V MAX tools 120V MAX tools What to verify
FLEXVOLT battery DEWALT states compatibility with compatible 20V MAX tools. DEWALT states compatibility with compatible 60V MAX tools. Only where the specific pack and tool documentation lists 120V MAX use. Exact battery model and the tool manual.
Standard 20V MAX battery Use with tools designed for the 20V MAX platform. Not established as compatible; do not assume interchangeability. Not established as compatible. The tool’s platform label and manual.
20V MAX charger DEWALT’s DCB612 page says the pack works with all 20V MAX chargers. The DCB118 manual says that charger accepts 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs. Confirm the exact charger model and use its current manual.

The 120V MAX column needs particular care. DEWALT’s product information lists 120V MAX compatibility for specific FLEXVOLT packs and configurations rather than establishing that every FLEXVOLT model works with every 120V MAX tool. For example, DEWALT describes two DCB609 packs supplying 360Wh combined in its 120V MAX tools, while the DCB612 product information lists 120V MAX compatibility. Treat those statements as model-specific and check the tool documentation before buying.

Can you use a FLEXVOLT battery in a 20V MAX tool?

Yes, when the tool is a compatible DEWALT 20V MAX model. This is one of the system’s intended uses. The battery remains physically and electrically suitable for the listed platform, and the pack handles the voltage change described by DEWALT.

Can a standard 20V MAX battery run a 60V MAX tool?

Do not assume it can. The manufacturer documentation establishes FLEXVOLT-to-platform compatibility, not reverse compatibility for conventional 20V MAX packs. If a 60V MAX tool manual does not specifically list the battery you own, use a documented compatible FLEXVOLT pack instead of trying to force the fit or defeat a lockout.

How automatic voltage switching affects everyday use

With a compatible FLEXVOLT pack, the tool platform determines the operating voltage the battery supplies. In practical terms, you can remove the same pack from a compatible 20V MAX tool and install it in a compatible 60V MAX tool without manually selecting a voltage setting on the battery.

That convenience is useful for a workshop that owns both platforms. It does not remove the need to check the model numbers: a battery that physically slides into a tool is not, by that fact alone, approved for every DEWALT platform. Read the compatibility section of the tool manual and the battery’s product documentation before first use.

Runtime: what DEWALT’s numbers actually compare

DEWALT publishes runtime multipliers for particular FLEXVOLT packs against a named smaller reference pack. The comparison baseline is important; the figures should not be read as a universal multiplier for every standard 20V MAX battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
FLEXVOLT pack Manufacturer-stated comparison Reference pack and conditions How to interpret it
DCB606, 6Ah 4× runtime Compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah battery pack when used in DEWALT 20V MAX tools. A DEWALT claim for that named comparison, not an independent test or guarantee in every application.
DCB609, 9Ah Up to 6× runtime Compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah battery pack in DEWALT 20V MAX tools. “Up to” describes the manufacturer’s stated maximum comparison, not a constant result.
DCB612, 12Ah Up to 6× runtime Compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah battery pack in DEWALT 20V MAX tools. The result depends on the tool and workload; it is not a universal sixfold increase.
DCB609, 9Ah 180Wh per pack DEWALT lists two packs as 360Wh combined for its 120V MAX tools. Energy capacity stated by DEWALT; the usable runtime still varies with power demand and operating conditions.

These are manufacturer claims, not laboratory results from an independent test organization. DEWALT’s pages do not establish that a DCB606 always lasts four times longer than every 20V MAX pack, or that a DCB609 or DCB612 always lasts six times longer than every smaller pack. The named DCB201 1.5Ah baseline must stay attached to each comparison.

Why amp-hours do not equal hours of work

Amp-hours describe charge capacity under a battery’s stated electrical conditions; they are not a stopwatch measurement. A tool drawing modest power can operate longer than a high-load tool using the same pack. Cutting dense material, drilling large holes, running a high-output saw, operating continuously or working in demanding conditions can all change the result.

Watt-hours provide a more useful energy-capacity comparison when voltage and operating conditions are stated. DEWALT lists 180Wh for one DCB609 pack and 360Wh for two packs in a 120V MAX configuration. That figure still does not convert directly into a guaranteed number of minutes because the tool’s power draw changes throughout a job.

How to make a useful runtime comparison for your own work

  1. Choose one tool and one repeatable task, such as a defined number of cuts or fasteners.
  2. Use fully charged packs and record the exact battery model, capacity and age.
  3. Keep the material, accessory, technique and duty cycle as similar as possible between packs.
  4. Record the number of completed operations or the elapsed active time, rather than estimating from amp-hours.
  5. Repeat the task enough times to account for normal variation, then keep the result tied to that tool and workload.

Your result will describe that particular setup. It should not replace DEWALT’s published baseline or be generalized to another tool with a different motor and load.

Capacity choices: 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah and 15Ah

DEWALT lists FLEXVOLT capacities including 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah and 15Ah. A larger capacity generally represents more stored energy in the same platform family, but it can also change the pack’s size, weight, balance and charging time. The right capacity depends on whether uninterrupted runtime or a lighter tool matters more for your work.

Priority Capacity decision Reasoning
Short tasks and low fatigue Consider a lower-capacity FLEXVOLT pack if its documented compatibility and runtime meet the job. A smaller pack may be easier to handle; do not select solely by the voltage label.
Long, repeated 20V MAX work Compare the 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah or 15Ah option that fits the tool and your handling limits. More capacity can reduce battery changes, but the actual gain depends on workload.
Mixed 20V MAX and 60V MAX ownership Favor a FLEXVOLT capacity that can cover the highest-demand tool while remaining practical in the smaller tool. The cross-platform benefit may be more valuable than buying separate battery families.
120V MAX equipment Use only the pack count and model combination named by the 120V MAX tool documentation. Some 120V MAX setups use two packs and are not a reason to assume single-pack compatibility.

Cost: why there is no defensible universal winner

The official specifications establish capacities, compatibility and runtime claims, but they do not provide a current, like-for-like price comparison between standard 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT batteries. Prices vary by country, retailer, date, promotions, pack count and whether the package includes a charger or tool. Without matching those variables, declaring one platform cheaper or a better value would be misleading.

Build a fair price comparison

Record Why it matters
Country or market and collection date Retail prices and availability change by region and over time.
Exact battery model “20V MAX” or “FLEXVOLT” alone does not identify capacity or included features.
Capacity and pack count Compare similar total capacity rather than one battery against a multipack.
Bare battery versus kit A kit containing a charger or tool is not comparable to a battery-only listing.
Charger included Include the replacement cost of a compatible charger if one package includes it and the other does not.
Warranty and seller terms Coverage, return conditions and authorized-seller status can affect practical value.
Promotional or recurring price Mark a one-time sale separately from a regular price so the comparison remains meaningful.

For a simple worksheet, calculate the purchase price for each option, then compare the total number of compatible tools, total capacity, included accessories and expected battery changes. A cost-per-watt-hour figure can be a useful secondary measure when the packs’ stated watt-hours are available, but it does not capture cross-platform compatibility, weight, warranty or the value of an included charger.

When a FLEXVOLT premium may make sense

A FLEXVOLT pack can justify a higher purchase price for someone who already owns compatible 60V MAX equipment and wants to share batteries with 20V MAX tools. The same logic can apply to a 20V MAX-only user who values the manufacturer-stated runtime of a specific FLEXVOLT model and accepts its additional size or weight.

If every tool you own is 20V MAX and your jobs are short, a standard 20V MAX battery may be adequate and a cross-platform feature may provide little practical benefit. That is a use-case decision, not a conclusion that one battery family is always cheaper.

Choosing between the two systems: a decision path

  1. Inventory your tools. Write down each tool’s exact model and whether its documentation identifies it as 20V MAX, 60V MAX or another platform.
  2. Separate current needs from future plans. If a 60V MAX purchase is likely, the ability to share a FLEXVOLT pack may reduce the number of battery families you need later.
  3. Set a handling limit. Compare pack size and weight for the tasks you perform overhead, on ladders or for long continuous periods.
  4. Match capacity to duty cycle. Pick the capacity that reduces interruptions without buying more energy than you can use before the next charge.
  5. Check the charger. Confirm that your charger model accepts the battery. DEWALT specifically documents DCB118 for 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs; use current documentation for other models.
  6. Collect dated prices. Compare equivalent capacity, pack count and kit contents in your market on the same date.
  7. Read the tool manual before ordering. The manual is the final check for platform, pack count and any 120V MAX requirements.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the voltage label works in both directions

FLEXVOLT-to-20V MAX and FLEXVOLT-to-60V MAX compatibility does not prove that a conventional 20V MAX pack can run a 60V MAX tool. Treat the platforms as different unless the manufacturer explicitly lists the combination.

Quoting “four times” or “six times” without the baseline

Always name the reference: DCB606 is stated at 4× versus DCB201 1.5Ah, while DCB609 and DCB612 are stated at up to 6× versus DCB201 1.5Ah in DEWALT’s 20V MAX tool comparisons. Removing the baseline turns a qualified claim into an unsupported generalization.

Comparing amp-hours as if they were runtime hours

Capacity alone cannot predict minutes of use. Tool power demand, material, accessory and duty cycle must be part of the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing a bare battery with a complete kit

Record whether each price includes a charger, tool or multiple batteries. Otherwise, the apparent price difference may reflect different contents rather than a cheaper battery.

Assuming every FLEXVOLT pack supports 120V MAX tools

Use the exact 120V MAX tool and battery documentation. DEWALT’s 120V descriptions are tied to listed models and, in some cases, a two-pack arrangement.

Forcing a battery into a tool

If a pack does not slide in normally, stop. Check the platform, model documentation and rails for an obstruction, then contact the manufacturer or seller if the compatibility remains unclear. Do not modify the pack, tool or connector to bypass a fit problem.

Charger and platform checks before the first job

Use the charger model’s current manual rather than relying on a similar-looking charger. DEWALT’s DCB612 information says the pack works with all 20V MAX chargers, and the DCB118 manual identifies support for 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs. Those statements support the named models; they are not a substitute for checking an older, newer or region-specific charger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before starting work, confirm that the battery is fully seated, the contacts are clean and undamaged, and the tool and battery model numbers match the documented platform. If the tool does not start, remove the pack and recheck compatibility before troubleshooting anything electrical. A charger indicator or tool lockout can signal a condition that only the relevant manual explains.

Practical verdict

Choose FLEXVOLT when cross-platform use, a documented high-capacity option or the stated runtime comparison solves a real problem in your workshop. Choose a standard 20V MAX battery when your tools are confined to that platform, your jobs do not require the extra capacity, or a dated price comparison shows the simpler pack meets your needs for less.

Neither platform wins on the voltage number alone. The defensible decision combines the exact tool and charger compatibility, the battery model and capacity, the named runtime baseline, handling requirements, kit contents and a same-day price in your market.
