The DeWALT DCMAS5713X1 is a 54V XR FLEXVOLT split-boom power head supplied with a string-trimmer attachment. Its brushless motor, 38 cm swath and compatibility with separate brush-cutter, pole-hedge-trimmer and pole-saw heads make it more versatile than a dedicated trimmer. The important buying caution is the battery: although the model name says “1 x 9Ah,” the cited CEE and UK product listings describe a 3.0Ah battery in their included-items sections. Verify the exact regional suffix and box contents before paying.
What the DCMAS5713X1 actually is
The DCMAS5713X1 is not merely a trimmer with a shaft that separates for storage. It is a modular 54V XR FLEXVOLT power head. The supplied lower shaft carries a string-trimmer head, while the upper motor unit can accept other DeWALT attachments. That design is intended for owners who want one battery system and motor to handle several jobs.
DeWALT describes the tool as a cordless brushless split-boom string trimmer. The split shaft makes transport and storage easier, but it also introduces a coupling between the power head and attachment. Buyers should therefore confirm that the attachment part numbers and regional variant match before ordering add-ons.

Specifications at a glance
| Specification | Published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Motor | 54V XR FLEXVOLT brushless | Manufacturer specification |
| Cutting width or swath | 38 cm | Listed by the CEE and UK product pages |
| Line | 2 mm on the CEE listing; 2.4 mm twisted line on the UK listing | Regional listing difference; check the local manual |
| Feed system | Bump feed | Manufacturer specification |
| Speed settings | Two | Manufacturer specification |
| Tool weight without battery | 5.4 kg | CEE listing |
| Weight including battery | 6.173 kg | CEE listing; CHOICE shows a separate 7.3 kg entry |
| Battery capacity stated in product information | 9Ah on the CEE specification | Included-items sections on the CEE and UK pages instead state a 3.0Ah battery |
| Charge time | 75 minutes | Manufacturer specification |
| Claimed runtime | Up to 60 minutes | Manufacturer claim with a 9Ah battery, not an independent test |
The conflicting weight and battery entries are not small details. A larger battery changes carrying weight and work duration, while line diameter affects the appropriate replacement spool and cutting load. Treat the table as a map of what different listings say, not as proof that every regional kit has identical contents.
What is in the box? Verify before purchase
The model name implies a kit with one 9Ah battery, but both the cited CEE and UK DEWALT pages list a 3.0Ah battery, a DCB118 charger and the grass-trimmer head in their included-items sections. Their specification areas separately refer to 9Ah capacity and up to 60 minutes of runtime. The pages do not reconcile those statements.
This may reflect regional packaging, a listing error or a difference between the advertised platform specification and the specific bundle. It is not safe to assume that a box marked DCMAS5713X1 contains a 9Ah pack everywhere. Before ordering, ask the seller to confirm all of the following in writing:

| Attachment | Part number | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Brush cutter | DCMASBC1N | Heavier weeds, scrub and vegetation that exceed ordinary line-trimming work |
| Pole hedge trimmer | DCMASPH6N | Extending reach for hedge sides and taller growth |
| Pole saw | DCMASPS5N | Pruning branches from the ground |
These heads are additional purchases, not evidence that every DCMAS5713X1 package includes them. Official information supports the named DeWALT heads; it does not establish universal compatibility with third-party attachments. Check the attachment instructions for your regional power head before buying a replacement or another brand’s accessory.
The split shaft has a practical advantage when several heads are stored in a shed or vehicle: the power unit and working end separate. The trade-off is that every changeover adds a connection to inspect and lock correctly. Keep the coupling clean, fully seat the shaft and use the locking mechanism specified for the tool rather than forcing an incompatible head.
Cutting setup and controls
The supplied trimmer uses a 38 cm cutting width and bump-feed line head. On a bump-feed head, the operator advances line by tapping the head against the ground while the motor is running, rather than stopping to pull out line manually. That is convenient when the line is consumed at a steady rate, but it can be awkward along hard edging or near obstacles.
Line information differs by region. The CEE specification lists 2 mm line, while the UK page describes 2.4 mm twisted line. Do not select replacement line solely from a photograph or a retailer title. Use the diameter and profile specified for the exact head in your local manual; an incorrect size can feed poorly, overload the motor or fail to fit the spool.
Two speed settings let the operator trade cutting aggression and energy use. A lower setting can be appropriate for light grass and longer sessions; a higher setting is useful when the vegetation demands more power. The published material does not provide independent measurements of speed, torque or area cut per charge, so those controls should be viewed as operating choices rather than a guaranteed productivity figure.

Battery runtime and charging
DEWALT states up to 60 minutes of runtime with a 9Ah battery and lists a 75-minute charging time. “Up to” is a best-case manufacturer claim, not a universal work session. Runtime changes with grass height, density, line diameter, speed setting, stopping frequency, temperature and the battery’s condition.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Owner evidence illustrates that range. An ITS.co.uk reviewer writing in June 2024 reported about 45 minutes of heavy work while still having charge remaining, alongside strong cutting performance. Another ITS reviewer in August 2024 described power and battery life as good but found the tool heavy. These are individual accounts, not controlled tests and not a promise that every user will obtain 45 minutes.
Thick, tall grass can consume both line and battery faster. A ProductReview.com.au owner said that heavy growth took longer and used more battery and line than ordinary trimming. If your property regularly presents that workload, plan around shorter cutting intervals or a second compatible battery rather than the headline maximum.
Because the package battery is unclear, runtime comparisons are meaningful only when the battery capacity is stated. A kit supplied with 3.0Ah cannot be compared directly with a 9Ah-equipped kit on the basis of the same session length. Confirm the pack first, then consider whether the 75-minute charging time fits your work pattern.
Weight, balance and edging comfort
The CEE page gives a 5.4 kg tool weight without the battery and 6.173 kg with one. CHOICE’s public listing shows a 7.3 kg weight entry, without exposing enough detail to explain the difference. These figures may represent different configurations or measurement methods, so use the value tied to the battery and attachment you will actually carry.

At these weights, balance and harness adjustment matter as much as the bare number. The motor sits at the upper end of the split shaft, while the cutting head is held away from the body. A correctly fitted harness can reduce arm loading during clearing, but it cannot make the tool weightless. One ProductReview.com.au owner reported that the supplied harness did not fit well; that is a personal account rather than a documented design fault.
Edging is a particularly important decision point. The long shaft and bump head are configured for sweeping grass, not for the precise vertical control of a lightweight dedicated edger. Several owner comments describe the tool as heavy, so assess whether it is too heavy for edging. If most of your work is narrow lawn edging, try the balance with the intended battery before committing. If your work alternates between open-area trimming and heavier clearing, the modular system may justify the extra mass.
What independent and owner evidence can—and cannot—tell you
CHOICE lists the exact DCMAS5713X1 as a cordless line trimmer for a medium yard and publicly shows fields including a 38 cm cutting diameter, 2 mm line and 75-minute charge time. Its expert rating, detailed performance scores, test results and recommendations are behind a member-access gate on the accessible page. No public score should be inferred from the listing alone.
Owner comments are useful for identifying questions to ask, but they do not establish failure rates. The ITS comments support reports of strong cutting power, useful battery life and substantial weight. The ProductReview.com.au account supports reports of effective bump feed and useful brush-cutter capability, while also describing accidental line release after striking obstacles, slower progress in thick tall grass and an ill-fitting harness. Those observations should be treated as experiences from individual users.
No controlled hands-on result is available here for noise, vibration, exact area per charge, line consumption or cutting speed. A buyer should not treat the manufacturer’s runtime claim or an isolated owner’s session as a laboratory measurement.

How to set up and use the kit safely
- Confirm the parts. Match the power head, trimmer shaft, guard, head, battery and charger to the regional manual. Resolve any 3.0Ah-versus-9Ah discrepancy before starting work.
- Join the split shaft. Insert the attachment shaft fully into the power head and engage the specified locking mechanism. Do not operate the tool if the coupling is not completely seated.
- Fit the guard and head. Install the supplied protection and trimmer head exactly as shown for your variant. Check that the line diameter agrees with the local specification, because the cited CEE and UK listings differ.
- Charge and inspect the battery. Use the supplied DCB118 charger where included. Inspect the pack, contacts, shaft connection, guard and line head for damage before fitting the battery.
- Adjust the harness and controls. Set the harness so the head is balanced at the intended cutting height. Select the lower or higher speed according to the vegetation and keep bystanders clear.
- Start with a clear area. Sweep slowly through grass, allowing the line head to do the work. Avoid striking hard edging, stones or other obstacles; impacts can consume line and, according to one owner, may trigger unwanted line release.
- Stop before changing anything. Remove the battery before clearing wrapped grass, replacing line or swapping attachment heads.
Where this kit makes sense
| Your priority | Why the DCMAS5713X1 may fit | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| One battery platform for several jobs | The power head accepts the named brush-cutter, pole-hedge-trimmer and pole-saw heads. | Availability and regional compatibility of each additional head. |
| Open-area grass trimming | 38 cm swath and brushless 54V power provide a substantial cutting setup. | Actual battery capacity in the kit and realistic runtime for your grass. |
| Frequent precision edging | The trimmer can perform edging, but the long shaft and mass may be tiring. | Balance, harness fit and the return policy if possible. |
| Heavy weeds and scrub | The separate DCMASBC1N brush-cutter head expands capability. | Attachment price, blade or line requirements and local manual instructions. |
| Occasional light trimming | A lower speed can reduce energy use, and the modular design may replace several tools. | Whether the kit’s weight and charging time outweigh the convenience. |
Maintenance and common problem checks
Line will not feed
Stop the motor, remove the battery and inspect the spool for tangled or incorrectly sized line. Confirm the diameter required by your local head; the CEE and UK listings do not state the same value. Refit the spool according to the manual rather than forcing extra line into it.
The head releases too much line
Check the bump-feed technique and look for damage around the spool after an impact. One owner reported accidental release after hitting obstacles, but there is no evidence here that this is a general failure rate. If the problem persists with the correct line and normal contact, document it for the seller or service centre.
Runtime is much shorter than expected
First identify the installed battery capacity. Then consider speed setting, tall or wet grass, line diameter, stalled cutting and battery temperature. The 60-minute figure applies to DEWALT’s stated 9Ah configuration and should not be applied to a 3.0Ah pack.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The tool feels unstable or painful
Recheck the harness, shaft connection and head position. A heavier battery changes balance. If the harness cannot be adjusted to keep the head neutral, the platform may be a poor match for long edging sessions even if its cutting power is adequate.
How to compare it with another trimmer
Compare complete, like-for-like packages rather than bare tool prices. The following checks prevent the most common misleading comparisons:
- System flexibility: count the named heads you will actually buy and add their costs to the power-head kit.
- Carrying weight: compare tool, battery and attachment together, not the advertised bare-tool figure.
- Cutting setup: match swath, line diameter, feed design and whether a blade-based brush-cutter option exists.
- Work session: record battery capacity, charging time and the conditions behind any runtime claim.
- Package contents: ensure both products include a battery, charger, guard and working head before comparing prices.
- Evidence quality: separate manufacturer specifications, independent test data and anecdotal owner comments.
Pros and limitations
Strengths
- Modular split-boom design can support trimming, brush cutting, hedge trimming and pole sawing from one power head.
- Brushless 54V platform is specified for substantial cordless cutting power.
- 38 cm cutting width is suited to covering open grass efficiently.
- Two speed settings and bump feed provide adjustable operation.
- Split shaft simplifies storage and transport compared with a one-piece shaft.
Limitations
- Battery capacity and included-items information conflict across the cited DEWALT listings.
- The tool is heavy compared with a small dedicated trimmer, especially with a larger battery and an attachment installed.
- Line diameter is not consistent between the CEE and UK pages, so replacement-line selection requires checking the local manual.
- Additional heads cost extra and should not be assumed to fit every regional variant.
- Public independent performance scores are unavailable, and owner reports are anecdotal.
- Live price and stock are not established by the available information.
Who should buy the DCMAS5713X1?
Choose it when a single 54V battery platform and interchangeable heads are more valuable than the lightest possible trimmer. It is particularly logical for a property where trimming is only one of several recurring jobs and where the owner is prepared to purchase the compatible brush-cutter, hedge-trimmer or pole-saw heads separately.
Be cautious when your priority is effortless edging, when the operator cannot comfortably manage a 6 kg-plus tool, or when you need a guaranteed 9Ah battery in the carton. In those cases, verify the regional package physically and compare the fully equipped weight with a dedicated alternative.
The DCMAS5713X1 is therefore a credible modular cordless platform, but not a simple “buy the 9Ah kit and expect 60 minutes” proposition. The exact battery, line specification, regional suffix and accessory contents determine whether the package delivers the value its name suggests.
