A DeWALT 20V MAX battery that will not charge usually has one of five causes: it is not fully seated, the charger is reporting a hot-or-cold delay, the battery or charger has a fault, the outlet or cord is not supplying power, or the pack is damaged. Start with the charger’s exact LED instructions, reseat the pack until it clicks, let a hot pack cool naturally, and cross-test the battery and charger separately. Do not bypass the pack’s protection or try to force-charge it.
The most reliable diagnosis is a controlled swap: test the suspect battery on a known-good compatible DeWALT charger, then test a known-good battery on the suspect charger. That separates a battery problem from a charger or power problem without opening either device.
What the charger’s light is telling you
DeWALT chargers do not all use identical LED sequences. A red light commonly indicates normal charging on compatible models, while a second color or a different blink pattern can indicate that the pack is too hot, too cold, or considered faulty. The same-looking symptom can therefore mean different things on different charger models.
Find the manual for the model number printed on your charger and match the pattern exactly. Do not assume that an unfamiliar blink automatically proves the battery is dead. DeWALT’s manuals distinguish at least four conditions: charging, full, hot/cold delay, and a problem with the pack or charger.

No light or no response
Check the wall outlet with another appliance, make sure the charger plug is fully inserted, and inspect the cord and housing for damage. Unplug the charger before examining the slot. If a known-good battery also produces no indication, the charger or its power source becomes the leading suspect. If only one battery fails to produce a light, the battery or its connection is more likely.
Red charging indication
On compatible charger models, a red charging indication is the normal charging state. Leave the pack in place until the charger changes to its full indication. The exact flash rate and companion indicators are model-specific, so use the manual rather than a generic chart copied from another charger.
Red plus yellow, or a hot/cold indication
This normally means the charger is delaying charging while it monitors pack temperature. Remove the battery from use and allow it to return to room temperature. Do not put it in a freezer, on a heater, in direct sun, or against an ice pack. Charging should begin after the delay clears and the pack is within the charger’s acceptable range.

Immediate full indication
If the charger immediately reports full when the tool has just stopped or the battery should be depleted, treat that as a diagnostic clue rather than proof that the pack is healthy. A communication, pack, charger, or contact fault can cause an immediate full state. Cross-test before deciding which component needs service.

Problem-pack or problem-charger pattern
A fault pattern means the charger has detected a condition it will not safely charge. Do not repeatedly remove and replace the battery in an attempt to override it. Record the charger model and the exact light sequence, then perform the controlled cross-test described below. If the pattern follows the battery, stop using that pack; if it appears with multiple known-good packs, suspect the charger or its power supply.
Safety checks before troubleshooting
Stop immediately if you see a cracked case, swelling, leaking material, melted plastic, scorched terminals, a damaged cord, or liquid contamination. A pack that becomes unusually hot, smells abnormal, hisses, or vents should be moved away from combustible material only if it is safe to do so, and it should not be placed back on a charger. Contact DeWALT support or an authorized service center for handling instructions.
Use only a compatible DeWALT charger. The DCB1112 instruction manual states: “DO NOT attempt to charge the battery pack with any chargers other than a DEWALT charger.” Never open the pack, bridge its terminals, connect it to another battery, defeat the charger’s temperature sensing, or continue using damaged equipment. Lithium-ion packs contain protection electronics and high-energy cells; an improvised “jump start” can create a fire or rupture hazard even when the pack appears flat.
Safe step-by-step charging diagnosis
- Remove the pack and unplug the charger. Wait long enough for the charger to stop and for you to inspect it safely.
- Inspect the battery. Look for cracks, swelling, leakage, bent or recessed terminals, burn marks, and dirt lodged around the contacts. Do not scrape contacts with a metal tool.
- Inspect the charger. Check the slot, vents, cord, plug, and housing for debris, liquid, scorching, or broken plastic. Keep the charger’s air path clear.
- Verify the household supply. Plug the charger into a correctly powered outlet. If the outlet is controlled by a switch, resettable breaker, or ground-fault device, confirm that it is on and reset. Do not use a damaged extension cord.
- Reconnect the charger first. Plug it into the outlet, then wait for its normal idle indication, if the model has one.
- Seat the battery completely. Slide the pack into the charger’s rails until it is level and clicks into the latch. DeWALT says the battery must be fully seated and clicked into a DCB118 for the charging sequence to commence. A tilted pack, an obstruction, or an unlatched pack can look electrically dead even when its cells remain usable.
- Read the model-specific LED sequence. Note whether the charger shows charging, full, hot/cold delay, or a fault. Do not substitute a pattern from a different charger family.
- Allow a hot or cold pack to recover. If the battery was just used heavily or feels hot, remove it and let it cool naturally at room temperature. DeWALT documents shutdown above 70°C and says charging or a reset procedure waits until the internal pack temperature drops below 60°C. Those are internal thresholds, not a reason to measure the pack with a household thermometer or force it across the limit.
- Retry once at a normal temperature. After the pack has returned to room temperature, reseat it and observe whether the delay clears. If it immediately returns to a fault state, move to cross-testing rather than repeatedly cycling it.
- Cross-test one variable at a time. Use a known-good compatible DeWALT charger with the suspect battery, then use a known-good compatible battery with the suspect charger. Change only one component per test and write down each LED result.
- Stop when the evidence points to a fault. A pack that fails on two compatible chargers, or a charger that fails with two known-good packs, should be removed from service and referred to DeWALT support or an authorized service center.
How to tell whether the battery or charger is bad
Cross-testing is more informative than judging by one LED. The DCB118 is specified for DeWALT 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT batteries and provides LED status indication, so it can be used as a reference charger when it is known to be working and is appropriate for the pack. Use the same voltage family and a physically compatible charger; do not treat compatibility as universal across unrelated battery systems.

This table describes a practical diagnostic inference, not a DEWALT laboratory test. A pack and charger can both have faults, and a dirty or damaged interface can mimic an electronic failure. If results conflict, provide the complete test history to an authorized technician rather than repeatedly applying power.
Temperature delay: why a hot battery appears not to charge
High current use heats lithium-ion cells. DEWALT says a hot pack can shut down above 70°C and that the charger may wait until the internal temperature falls below 60°C before charging or resetting. The charger monitors the pack rather than relying solely on surface temperature, so a case that feels merely warm does not guarantee that the internal threshold has cleared.
Set the battery on a dry, noncombustible surface in a normal indoor environment and let it cool on its own. Keep vents unobstructed. Forced cooling can create condensation or an uneven temperature gradient, while heating a pack can damage cells and defeat the protection system. If the indication remains in hot/cold delay after the battery has been at room temperature for a reasonable period, cross-test it; a temperature sensor or pack-control fault is possible.

A battery can have adequate charge and still fail to start the sequence if the rails are not aligned or the latch has not engaged. Remove the pack, inspect both sets of contacts under good lighting, and clear loose dust with a dry, nonmetallic method. Do not pour cleaner into the charger, bend contacts, or file the terminals. A pack that rocks, sits high on one side, or will not click into place may have a damaged housing or latch and should be serviced.

After cleaning only loose external debris, insert the pack straight along the rails. Press firmly enough for the latch to engage, but never force a pack that binds. If slight movement makes the indicator start and stop, discontinue use: an intermittent high-current connection can heat the contacts and damage both the battery and charger.
Power and charger checks
When no battery produces any LED response, start at the wall. Verify the receptacle with another appliance, check for a tripped breaker or ground-fault device, and try a different known-good outlet. Inspect the charger cord for cuts, crushed sections, exposed conductors, or a loose plug. A charger that is silent and dark on multiple confirmed outlets should not be opened; its internal fuse, switch-mode supply, or control electronics require qualified service.
Keep the charger within the environmental conditions specified in its manual and leave its cooling vents clear. The DCB118 is an 8 Amp fast charger for DeWALT 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT batteries and uses fan-assisted hot/cold management. Its faster charging capability does not make it safe to use with an incompatible battery family, nor does it override a pack’s thermal or fault protections.
When an immediate “full” reading is misleading
A full indication normally means the charger believes charging is complete, but an immediate full state on a recently depleted pack deserves investigation. Possible causes include a poor contact, a pack-management communication fault, a deeply abnormal cell condition, or a charger problem. Confirm the tool’s behavior if it is safe to do so, then cross-test without trying to drain the pack artificially or connect it to another source.

If the battery runs a tool only briefly, drops out under load, becomes hot unusually quickly, or repeatedly reports full after short use, treat those symptoms as a pack-health issue even if the charger eventually shows a full light. Do not disassemble the housing to test individual cells. DeWALT’s service channels can evaluate the pack and determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate.
Replacement battery and charger choices
Replace a component only after the cross-test identifies which side of the system is failing. Match the battery’s voltage family and the charger’s approved battery families. A higher-capacity pack is not a substitute for a charger fault, and a faster charger cannot restore a pack with a failed protection circuit.

The DCB205’s 5Ah figure is its stated capacity, not a promise of a particular runtime; tool load, temperature, age, and operating conditions affect runtime. The DCB118’s 8 Amp rating describes charger output, not a guarantee that every pack will charge at that rate. The pack’s own thermal and protection controls can reduce or stop charging.

Contact DEWALT support or an authorized service center when a pack or charger remains unusable after correct seating, normal-temperature recovery, outlet verification, and cross-testing. Include the model numbers, purchase information if warranty coverage may apply, the exact LED sequence, whether the pack was hot or recently heavily used, and the results of each swap test.
Service is the correct route for swelling, leaks, cracks, scorch marks, damaged cords, recurring overheat behavior, a charger that fails with multiple known-good packs, or a battery that fails with multiple compatible chargers. Keep the suspect battery and charger separated from normal charging equipment until support advises what to do. Do not mail or transport a damaged lithium-ion pack without following the carrier and manufacturer instructions.
Practical checklist
- Confirm the charger model and read its own LED chart.
- Use a working outlet and inspect the cord, plug, slot, and vents.
- Check the pack and charger for damage, swelling, leakage, liquid, scorching, or debris.
- Insert the battery straight until it clicks and sits level.
- Let a hot pack cool naturally; DEWALT documents shutdown above 70°C and charging/reset below 60°C internal temperature.
- Test the battery on a known-good compatible charger.
- Test a known-good compatible battery on the suspect charger.
- Stop using any component that repeats a fault or shows physical damage.
- Never open, jump, bypass, force-charge, or use a non-DeWALT charger.
- Give DEWALT service the model numbers, LED pattern, and cross-test results.
Bottom line
Start with full seating and the exact charger manual, then allow temperature recovery and perform a one-variable-at-a-time cross-test. Those steps distinguish a simple connection or thermal delay from a failed battery, charger, or power source. Any damaged, swollen, leaking, unusually hot, or repeatedly faulting equipment should leave service and go to authorized DEWALT support rather than receive a DIY repair.
