The safest way to replace an old DEWALT 14.4V battery is to match the model number printed on the pack, not just the voltage. DC9091 is a DEWALT 14.4V battery model. A retailer lists a DC9091 replacement as a 14.4V, 3.0Ah nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) pack, but that listing is a product category rather than proof that every third-party pack will fit or perform the same.
Before ordering, read the battery label, identify the tool model, and verify the exact charger model in DEWALT’s battery-and-charger compatibility information and the tool manual. DC9144 is also listed as 14.4V, yet the available documentation does not establish that it can substitute for DC9091. Treat every model number as significant.
The short answer: choose by model, then verify the charger
If your old pack is labeled DC9091, search for a replacement described specifically as a “DEWALT 14.4V DC9091 replacement battery.” Do not buy a generic pack labeled only “14.4V DEWALT.” The model reference is what lets you compare the housing, contacts, chemistry, and approved charger against your tool’s documentation.

Identify the battery you actually own
Read the label on the existing pack
Remove the battery from the tool and look for a printed model code. On an older pack, the label may be on the side, underside, or near the release tabs. Record the complete code, including letters and digits. A partial code such as “14.4V” is not enough to select a safe replacement.
- Model number: Write down the full designation, such as DC9091 or DC9144.
- Voltage: Confirm that the label says 14.4V, but do not use this number as the only matching criterion.
- Chemistry: Note whether the pack identifies itself as NiMH or another chemistry. A replacement should be intended for the same tool and charging system.
- Physical condition: Photograph cracked plastic, melted contacts, corrosion, or swelling before disposal. Those signs are reasons not to reinstall the pack.
Find the tool model
The drill or driver has its own model designation, usually on the nameplate, handle, or rating label. Write it down separately from the battery model. The same voltage family can cover multiple tools, and a battery that fits one housing is not automatically approved for every tool in that family.
Check the manual before purchasing

Why 14.4V alone cannot prove compatibility
Voltage describes the electrical class of a battery, but a cordless-tool system also depends on the physical connector, pack shape, contact arrangement, charging method, and the tool’s approved battery family. DEWALT’s compatibility information therefore organizes combinations by model and charger rather than presenting one universal 14.4V rule.
Two packs can show the same nominal voltage while having different dimensions or contacts. A pack can also slide into a tool yet be unsuitable for its charger. - Open DEWALT’s battery-and-charger compatibility information. Locate your battery model and then check the column or row for the charger model you own.
- Look for an explicit incompatible entry. The official information includes charger-specific incompatibilities; do not override one because the pack is also rated 14.4V.
- Check the tool manual. Manuals can contain model-specific charging instructions and may direct you to a different charger for a particular pack.
- Stop when the model cannot be confirmed. Ask DEWALT Product & Tool Support for the correct manual, parts information, or service path instead of guessing.
If you no longer have the original charger, identify the charger model from a legible label or obtain the tool’s documented charging recommendation. A replacement battery should not be selected first and a charger improvised afterward.

What 3.0Ah means—and what it does not mean
A stated 3.0Ah capacity is a rating supplied by the seller. It is not a guaranteed runtime for your drill. Runtime depends on the task, load, condition of the tool, and the battery’s age. No independently verified runtime, lifespan, or maximum-power comparison is established here, so do not rank packs by an advertised amp-hour number alone.

When two listings claim to replace DC9091, compare the details that determine whether the pack is actually suitable. If a field is absent, contact the seller rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Step 4: Recheck the charger

The listing uses several model numbers
Ask the seller to identify the exact DEWALT cross-reference for your tool and charger in writing. Do not treat a long list of “equivalent” numbers as proof that every model is interchangeable. DC9091 and DC9144 should remain separate choices unless DEWALT documentation confirms a substitution.
