Joe Fender, creator of DEVOUR, has opened the first public Steam playtest for his next game, LIVING HELL. The playtest is a limited preview of a one-to-four-player survival horror game set in a radiation-mutated city; the latest publisher announcement says the full game is planned for Steam in 2027, with no exact release date announced.
What is LIVING HELL?
LIVING HELL is a survival horror game set in Pelican City after the ozone layer collapses and solar radiation causes widespread mutations. Players travel through an abandoned subway, moving across seven districts toward a rocket launch site. They leave the train to find mutated specimens, process them into biofuel, scavenge materials, craft supplies, and manage Thermal Load to avoid mutating.
The official Steam listing describes it as “a 1–4 player co-op survival horror game.” Its announced features include online co-op for up to four players and offline single-player, multiple routes, creatures with distinct behaviors, six playable characters with passive abilities, proximity voice chat, crafting and inventory, persistent saves, and gamepad support. These are features listed for the game; the smaller playtest build does not necessarily include all of them.

- Open the LIVING HELL Steam page and request access to the playtest.
- Wait for access to be granted. The developer says admitted players can invite three friends to play co-op.
- Launch the playtest from Steam and choose from the available scenarios. The developer recommends multiple runs because the map and creature combinations are randomized.
What does the playtest include?
The public build contains two maps and two creature scenarios, presented in randomized combinations. Joe Fender described it as the first public playable version and “just a snippet of the full game.” It is intended as an early look at the game, not a complete representation of the planned release.
