Design a changelog tracker as three connected but distinct things: a curated change entry, the product or schema revision it concerns, and the source revisions that support its claims. Stable identifiers and explicit provenance links let people understand what changed while helping retrieval systems return the exact evidence behind a statement. This is a practical synthesis of changelog conventions and provenance standards—not a single schema prescribed by any one source.
What a changelog tracker needs to represent
A changelog is curated release communication: a chronological list of notable changes associated with project versions, not a raw commit log. Keep the entry concise and user-facing; preserve commits and other detailed source material as linked evidence instead of treating commit messages as release notes. Keep a Changelog describes the convention, and the Research Data Alliance’s Data Versioning Use Cases 1.3 reproduces that definition.
For cited retrieval, the tracker must also distinguish what changed from the evidence used to describe it. The W3C PROV model provides general concepts for describing entities, activities, and responsible agents; it is a foundation to adapt, not a complete changelog schema. W3C PROV Overview
Keep change, release, schema, and source versions separate
These identifiers answer different questions and should not be collapsed into one version field:
#1 Best Overall
| Record or identifier | What it identifies | Example fields |
|---|---|---|
| Change entry | A curated statement about a notable change | change_id |
| Product release or revision | The software, documentation, or schema revision affected | release_id, version, revision_id |
| Tracker schema | The structure and validation rules used to interpret tracker records | schema_id, schema_version |
| Cited source revision | The precise source version supporting or qualifying a claim | source_id, source_version, revision URI |
The Citation File Format schema guide distinguishes its own schema version from software or dataset release information and commit identifiers. Schema.org likewise documents release snapshots and an explicit schemaVersion property. These are useful precedents for keeping the tracker’s own schema version separate from the product version it records and from the revision of a cited source. Build a linked core data model
The following fields are a starting design recommendation, not fields mandated by a standard. Use stable local identifiers for records, and make links between record types explicit so a client can traverse from a change to its release, evidence, and provenance.
Rank #2
Change entry
change_id: stable identifier for the curated entry.summary: concise description of the change and its effect on affected users or developers.change_type: controlled category such asAdded,Changed,Deprecated,Removed,Fixed, orSecurity; tailor the vocabulary to the project.statusandrelease_id: indicate whether the entry is unreleased or released, and link the release when assigned.affected_componentandimpact: identify the part that changed and the practical consequence.source_revision_idsandcitation_ids: link relevant code, document, or schema revisions and the source records that substantiate the entry.authored_atandpublished_at: record creation and release-publication times separately when the distinction matters.
Release or revision
release_id,version, andreleased_at.version_scheme: name the scheme in use. Keep a Changelog recommends stating whether a project uses Semantic Versioning and allows other schemes.revision_id: a commit, tag, or other revision identifier, with a stable URI when available.previous_release_idor a comparison link: make the interval represented by the release discoverable.
Source and citation record
source_id: stable local key, separate from the source URL.canonical_url,title, andpublisheror responsible agent.published_atorrevised_at, only when established by the source.source_version, commit, tag, or dated snapshot: identify the evidence revision. Do not imply that a mutable current page is an immutable snapshot.claim_textor a claim reference, with a relationship such as supports, qualifies, or contradicts.retrieved_atand, if reproducible capture is a requirement, a content digest.
Provenance event and schema metadata
Represent provenance as relationships rather than an opaque blob on the change entry: identify the entity created or changed, the activity that created or modified it, the responsible agents, and any derivation from earlier entities. That structure follows PROV’s general model and leaves responsibility and revision links queryable. The W3C PROV-XML specification defines provenance as “a record that describes the people, institutions, entities, and activities involved in producing, influencing, or delivering a piece of data or a thing.” W3C PROV-XML

Write entries for people, not just for indexes
Keep the newest release first, provide a top Unreleased section, group entries by change type, show release dates, and make versions and sections linkable. Keep a Changelog recommends dates in YYYY-MM-DD format and says to state the project’s versioning scheme. Its central editorial test is whether an entry tells readers about a noteworthy effect rather than merely repeating a commit message. Google Cloud’s API Design Guide changelog illustrates dated entries documenting notable guide changes. Keep a Changelog · Google Cloud API Design Guide changelog
A compact illustrative record might look like this:
Rank #4
{
"change_id": "chg-2026-0042",
"status": "released",
"change_type": "Changed",
"summary": "Added revision-specific citation targets to retrieval records.",
"release_id": "tracker-2.1.0",
"source_revision_ids": ["schema-rev-2.1.0"],
"citation_ids": ["src-w3c-prov-aq-rev"],
"authored_at": "2026-10-07T18:10:00Z"
}
Those identifiers and the timestamp are illustrative, not claims about an actual tracker release. In production, define timestamp syntax and required fields as part of the serialization and validation contract.

Support both direct record retrieval, when a provenance-record URI is known, and a query or index path, when a client knows the target resource or another lookup value. Index using stable source and target identifiers together with revision identifiers; when a source changes in place, retain or record the cited revision so later readers can identify which evidence was used. PROV-AQ describes provenance access and query patterns; the indexing details here are design recommendations. W3C PROV-AQ: Provenance Access and Query
Best Value
PROV-AQ also cautions that “A provenance record is not of itself guaranteed to be authoritative or correct.” Retrieval makes evidence findable; it does not certify the publisher, prove the claim, or establish that a record is complete. Preserve enough context—publisher, date, revision, claim relationship, and integrity information where available—for a person or downstream system to assess the evidence. W3C PROV-AQ: Provenance Access and Query
Version the tracker as a public interface
Keep a small, stable core and make project-specific extensions explicit. Save schema snapshots when reproducible interpretation matters, and specify how validators and clients should handle older records. Schema.org documents its official named releases separately from work in progress and provides dated snapshots for cases that need precise versioning. PROV-XML’s modular core and extension approach is another model for adding domain-specific fields without destabilizing the shared base. Schema.org: How We Work · W3C PROV-XML
Before adopting a schema, check whether it supports clear identity, distinct dates and revisions, claim-level evidence links, controlled extensions, validation against the defining schema version, retrieval by stable identifiers, and enough source context for trust assessment. Choose storage, authentication, retention, and indexing implementations separately according to the tracker’s workload and compatibility requirements; the provenance standards describe concepts and access patterns, not a required deployment architecture.
