A cover can look different in a post page and a feed card because the displayed image may be a transformed version of your upload. In examples reported by Frank Chu on October 1, 2026, DEV’s image proxy returned WebP and used a fixed-ratio cover transform that cropped a wide image when the requested shape was square. His measurements are a case study, not an official guarantee of how every DEV surface or device handles images.
What the reported measurements show
Chu tested a 1000×420 PNG and inspected the proxy responses. In his examples, the response was WebP even though the uploaded source was PNG. The parameters he reported were embedded in the generated image URLs rather than selected by the author in an editor control.
| Context | Reported request | Effect in the examples |
|---|---|---|
| Cover | Width 1000, height 420, fit=cover, gravity=auto, format=auto |
Fills the requested dimensions; when source and target ratios differ, content can be cropped. |
| Inline image | Width 800, no fixed height, fit=scale-down, gravity=auto, format=auto |
Scales down proportionally in the tested example, retaining the full image. |
These are parameters Chu observed in his tested URLs, not published DEV specifications confirmed for all feed cards, post pages, devices, or formats.
Why a cover can lose content at the edges
fit=cover fills the entire requested box. If the source and destination have different aspect ratios, some of the source must be removed to avoid empty space. Chu’s 1000×420 source is much wider than a square. When he requested 400×400 with fit=cover, the returned image was 400×400, so the wide source was cropped to fill the square. A small line of text near the left edge can therefore remain visible in one display context and disappear in another.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
The reported cover request itself uses a 1000×420 box, which matches the example source’s ratio. Chu recommends creating covers at that ratio and keeping important text or imagery away from the edges. He also notes that gravity=auto appears to choose a crop position heuristically; the rules behind that behavior are unknown from his account. Do not assume it will preserve a particular subject or edge detail.
How inline images differ in the tested requests
The reported inline transform specifies a width but no fixed height and uses fit=scale-down. In Chu’s square-box test, the same 1000×420 source returned at 400×168, retaining the full composition rather than filling a 400×400 square. This is useful for diagrams and screenshots where cutting off labels or steps would change the meaning.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
Chu recommends supplying inline images with adequate width so they can be reduced for display. In his tested examples, requesting a 4000-pixel width did not upscale the 1000-pixel source. That observation applies to those requests only; it is not evidence of a universal maximum or a stable platform rule.

What the file-size figures do—and do not—mean
For his single 1000×420 example, Chu reported an original PNG size of 211,618 bytes and a same-dimension proxy WebP response of 71,664 bytes, which he described as 66% smaller. His 800-pixel-wide WebP output was 46,168 bytes, reported as 78% smaller than the original PNG. These are measurements of one image and its tested outputs, not a general compression benchmark or a promise about every upload.

How to check what a particular image URL returns
Appearance in a browser alone does not establish whether the file was cropped, resized, or re-encoded. Inspect the transformed response’s bytes and dimensions for the exact URL and context you care about. A response can differ by requested parameters, so compare the cover URL with the inline URL rather than assuming one upload has a single displayed form.
Chu’s article describes fetching the transformed image and examining its format and dimensions. The practical check is to save the response from the image URL, then read its dimensions and format with an image-inspection tool or script. Treat the result as evidence about that specific URL at that time, not all DEV surfaces.

Keep the editor feature separate from image-proxy behavior
DEV Team’s November 13, 2025 announcement documented prompt-driven cover-image generation in the post editor. Ben Halpern wrote, “We’re happy to roll out a new feature today: Prompt-driven image generation, built directly into the post editor.” The announcement said the feature was available on DEV and other hosted Forem instances, while self-hosted Forem instances could use it with their own key; it identified the model at that time as gemini-2.5-flash-image, also called “Nano Banana.” That editor feature announcement does not verify the image-proxy parameters Chu reported in 2026.
What to take away when publishing
- For covers, compose around the reported 1000×420 ratio and keep essential details away from edges; this is Chu’s operational advice based on his observations.
- For inline diagrams and screenshots, a proportional scale-down is less likely to cut off content than a cover-style crop in the examples described.
- When a displayed image looks wrong, inspect the transformed URL’s actual output dimensions and format before changing the source asset.
As Chu asks in his October 1, 2026 article: “If you publish on a platform that transforms your images, do you know which fit mode it uses?”
