For a smooth Destiny 2 experience, use your monitor’s native resolution, cap the frame rate at a level your PC can sustain in its most demanding activity, preserve texture quality when your VRAM allows it, and lower foliage, ambient occlusion, and shadows before reducing render resolution. A field of view around 90–95 balances peripheral awareness with readable targets, while Motion Blur should be disabled for competitive play. On compatible NVIDIA hardware, leave Reflex enabled unless troubleshooting requires a change.
Check that your PC and Windows installation meet the baseline
Graphics tuning cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system or hardware below the game’s baseline. Bungie lists Windows 10 64-bit, 6 GB of system memory, and a GTX 660- or GTX 1050-class graphics card as minimum requirements. Its recommended level is 8 GB of RAM with GTX 970- or GTX 1060-class graphics performance. These are requirement tiers, not a promise of a particular frame rate; performance still depends on your processor, graphics card, driver, resolution, background tasks, and the activity being played.
Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 support ended on June 4, 2024. If you are still using one of those versions, upgrade to a supported 64-bit Windows installation before spending time on graphics settings. A modern driver and a clean reboot are sensible prerequisites whenever frame pacing suddenly changes after an update.

Choose a sustainable FPS target instead of chasing a peak number
The right target is the highest frame rate your system can hold during its worst normal scenario: a busy public event, a crowded social space, a raid encounter with heavy effects, or a Crucible match with frequent combat. A high menu or patrol average does not matter if the frame rate repeatedly falls below your display’s refresh cycle during those moments.

Start at the monitor’s native resolution and select a cap that your PC can maintain in that demanding activity. There is no universal “best FPS” number because a 60 Hz display, a 144 Hz display, and a high-refresh panel impose different useful targets, and CPU-limited and GPU-limited systems behave differently. A stable cap generally feels better than an uncapped rate that swings widely between scenes.
Change one setting at a time, replay the same activity, and watch the lowest sustained performance rather than a brief maximum. If lowering a setting does not improve the difficult scene, restore it and test another option; that result indicates the bottleneck is elsewhere.
Recommended Destiny 2 settings for a stable starting point
Use the following order as a practical baseline. The FPS changes in the table come from NVIDIA’s measured test scene and are directional evidence, not guarantees for every PC, driver, resolution, or Destiny 2 activity.

How each major setting affects performance and clarity
Field of view: awareness versus target size
A wider field of view shows more of the space beside and behind your reticle, which can help you notice a flanking opponent. The trade-off is geometric: the same central enemy occupies fewer pixels, so aiming at distant or small targets can become harder. NVIDIA measured only about 2.4 FPS saved when changing FOV from 105 to 95 in its test scene, so choose this setting primarily for visibility and comfort rather than as a first-line performance fix.
Foliage, ambient occlusion, and shadows: efficient reductions
These effects add substantial GPU work without controlling the fundamental sharpness of weapon sights or character textures. Lower foliage distance first when outdoor scenes cause dips. If the GPU is still limiting performance, select HDAO for ambient occlusion and use High shadow quality instead of the highest option. NVIDIA’s scene-specific measurements found those three changes, together with the FOV adjustment and another measured change, produced roughly 20 FPS of combined improvement. That aggregate is a directional example, not an expected gain on every machine.
Textures and VRAM: preserve detail until memory becomes the problem
Texture quality affects surface clarity more than the heavy lighting effects listed above. NVIDIA measured approximately 2.6 GB of VRAM usage at 1920×1080 with maximum settings and approximately 3.2 GB when render resolution was raised to 200 percent. Its guidance recommends at least 3 GB of VRAM for the highest textures at 1080p. If your card has enough memory, keeping textures High or Highest usually protects visual detail while you reduce more expensive effects. When VRAM is insufficient, stutter and texture streaming problems can outweigh the benefit of a sharper texture setting; lower it one step and retest.

Render resolution: the final quality-versus-FPS lever
Render resolution determines how many pixels the GPU actually shades. Increasing it above 100 percent can reduce aliasing and sharpen fine geometry, but it increases both GPU load and VRAM use. Lowering it can rescue a GPU-bound system when the other changes are not enough, at the cost of a softer image. Because it affects clarity everywhere, make it the last major adjustment rather than the first.

Competitive play rewards readable motion and predictable frame pacing. Disable Motion Blur so rapid turns do not add an artificial smear over enemies, projectiles, or attacks. Since this setting has no measured performance benefit when disabled, leave other settings unchanged if your only goal is higher FPS.
Set FOV in the 90–95 range as a balanced starting point. Increase it if peripheral awareness is more valuable to your play style than maximum central target size. If you frequently lose track of distant opponents or struggle with precision weapons, reduce it slightly instead of lowering render resolution; that changes spatial framing without making every surface less sharp.

Keep the monitor’s native resolution and your chosen texture level when the GPU and VRAM can sustain them. Reduce foliage distance, ambient occlusion, and shadows first when a busy fight causes dips. The goal is not the highest average number in an empty lane; it is consistent frame delivery while enemies and effects are on screen.
Configure NVIDIA Reflex and understand the latency trade-off
Destiny 2 supports NVIDIA Reflex on compatible NVIDIA graphics cards, and Reflex is enabled by default on those systems. Reflex coordinates the CPU and GPU workload to reduce the queue of rendered frames, which can improve input responsiveness when the GPU is busy.

Bungie documents three CVARS modes: value 0 disables Reflex, value 1 selects the default Low Latency behavior, and value 2 selects Low Latency with Boost. Boost overrides normal GPU power-saving behavior so the card stays more aggressively ready to render; it may reduce latency slightly while increasing power use, heat, and fan activity. For most compatible systems, leave the default enabled mode in place, then test Boost only if you can accept the extra power draw and it addresses a real responsiveness problem. Disabling Reflex can increase latency, so use mode 0 mainly for troubleshooting or controlled comparison.

Reflex does not replace a stable frame-rate target. If the GPU is saturated, lower the expensive effects listed earlier and cap the result at a sustainable rate; latency improvements are easier to feel when frame times are not spiking.

- Confirm the platform. Use a supported 64-bit Windows installation, current graphics drivers, and at least the listed memory and graphics baseline.
- Select the display’s native resolution. Avoid changing render scale while establishing your baseline so you can judge the effect of individual settings.
- Set a realistic frame cap. Choose a value your PC can hold in the hardest activity you regularly play, not the average shown in a quiet area.
- Preserve textures. Set Texture Quality to High or Highest if your VRAM is sufficient; lower it only when memory pressure or streaming stutter appears.
- Choose FOV. Start around 90–95, then adjust for the balance between peripheral information and central target size.
- Reduce foliage detail distance. Move High to Medium if outdoor or foliage-heavy scenes produce dips. This is often a better first reduction than lowering image resolution.
- Select HDAO for ambient occlusion. Use it when the GPU remains the limiting component after the foliage change.
- Set shadows to High. Reduce the highest shadow option if frame times still spike, checking a representative combat scene after each change.
- Turn Motion Blur off for PvP. Treat this as a visibility preference because it does not provide a measured FPS gain.
- Adjust render resolution last. Lower it only when the previous steps cannot meet the cap, or raise it when you have substantial GPU headroom and want a cleaner image.
- Validate the result. Replay the same demanding activity, compare sustained frame times, and keep the change only if it improves the worst moments without introducing blur, stutter, or distracting image loss.
Troubleshoot sudden drops, stutter, or a broken configuration
If lowering settings does not improve the difficult scene
The game may be CPU-limited, capped below the tested range, or affected by a background process rather than by the GPU effect you changed. Restore the visual setting, keep the frame cap realistic, and test in the same activity while checking whether GPU utilization is actually high. A lower render scale helps a GPU-bound system; it will not solve a processor or background-task bottleneck.
If the image becomes soft or shimmering
Restore native display resolution and 100 percent render resolution first. If performance is still short, keep textures at the highest level your VRAM supports and lower foliage, ambient occlusion, or shadows instead. Raising render resolution to 200 percent can increase VRAM use from about 2.6 GB to about 3.2 GB in NVIDIA’s 1920×1080 maximum-settings measurement, so check memory headroom before using it as a quality upgrade.

If a custom setting causes graphics or input problems
Close Destiny 2 completely, delete C:UsersUSER_NAMEAppdataRoamingBungieDestinyPCprefsCVARS.xml, and relaunch. Bungie documents this file-reset procedure so the game can generate a fresh set of defaults. You will need to reapply your preferred graphics and control settings afterward. The same CVARS documentation notes that a frame-cap value of 0 means the default 200 FPS cap; do not assume that zero means unlimited performance.
If windowed or fullscreen behavior is the problem
Use the game’s display controls to return to a known window mode, then retest before changing multiple graphics variables. Bungie’s CVARS guidance includes window-mode values for recovery, but changing unrelated variables at the same time makes it difficult to identify which option caused the fault.
Use four tests when comparing any two presets
- Sustained frame-time stability: test the activity that normally produces your worst dips.
- Resolution and render scale: record both, because a higher render scale can change GPU and VRAM load dramatically even when the display resolution is unchanged.
- Peripheral awareness versus target size: compare FOV by tracking both flank visibility and the readability of central targets.
- Responsiveness versus power draw: evaluate Reflex mode, frame pacing, temperatures, and fan noise together rather than treating latency as an isolated number.
These comparisons keep the decision tied to your hardware and play style. NVIDIA’s figures are useful for identifying which options tend to be expensive, but they were measured in a particular scene and should not be treated as a guaranteed FPS increase on every Destiny 2 installation.
