Destiny 2 crashes do not have one universal cause. The right fix depends on your platform, any displayed error code, and whether the game closes, freezes, or merely loses performance. Start by checking Bungie’s current issue notices, then follow the matching PC or console steps below—repairing files or resetting settings is usually a better early step than reinstalling.

First, identify what is actually happening

Before changing settings, note your platform (PC, PlayStation, or Xbox), the exact error code if one appears, and what happened just before the problem began. Record whether Destiny 2 closes to the desktop or home screen, becomes unresponsive, or stays open with frame hitches or performance drops. A launcher update problem is different again.

Timing can help narrow the branch: note whether the issue started after a game update, graphics-driver change, or settings change. Bungie’s error guidance points to different possibilities: BROCCOLI is associated with GPU detection or driver trouble, MARMOT with corrupted game files, and RUTABAGA with performance falling below sustainable levels. These clues do not prove the cause of an individual crash.

Check Bungie’s current issue notices

Before making system changes, check Bungie’s Destiny 2 Known Issues and Vital Information. The page is a targeted list, not a complete inventory of every fault. Last updated July 7, 2026, it notes that some laptops using Intel 12th-generation Iris integrated graphics may crash in high-demand environments; Bungie suggests configuring Windows graphics preferences to run Destiny 2 on the discrete GPU. The page also says Bungie is investigating Steam frame hitches or performance drops since Update 9.7.0.2. That notice is not proof that it explains a particular player’s crash.

Try the least disruptive fixes first

  1. Restart the game and platform. Fully quit Destiny 2 and restart the PC or console. For an update-related error, restart the relevant launcher as well.
  2. Install available game updates. For CAT, Bungie says an update is available and directs players to update through their platform. Follow the platform’s normal update process.
  3. Repair or verify the game files. For MARMOT, Bungie associates the error with corrupted game files and provides platform-specific repair or verification steps. On PC, use the launcher’s file-verification option; on console, follow Bungie’s quit, cache-clear, and restart steps. Try these before a full reinstall.

For PC update issues, Bungie’s CAT instructions also cover restarting the launcher, verifying files when needed, and clearing launcher cache. For MARMOT, use the steps for your own platform in Bungie’s MARMOT guide.

If Destiny 2 crashes on PC

Check system fit and software updates

Compare your PC with Bungie’s published PC system requirements, including the listed CPU, GPU, RAM, and 64-bit Windows 10 requirement. Bungie says it does not officially support Destiny 2 PC on laptop configurations, even when a laptop meets or exceeds the listed minimum specifications. Requirements and support details can change, so consult the current page rather than relying on an old checklist.

For BROCCOLI, Bungie describes a GPU detection issue commonly caused by a driver crash and advises updating Windows and graphics drivers. These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that a driver update will stop every crash. See Bungie’s BROCCOLI guidance.

Reduce load for RUTABAGA or performance problems

Bungie associates RUTABAGA with performance dropping below sustainable levels. Its suggested steps are to close background applications, update the operating system and GPU firmware, and check that the PC meets the published requirements. Follow Bungie’s RUTABAGA instructions. If the game only hitches or loses frames without closing, distinguish that symptom from a crash when checking current known issues.

Reset settings only when the symptoms point there

If the problem involves graphics settings, key bindings, or other in-game settings, Bungie recommends deleting CVARS.xml as an initial troubleshooting step. Destiny 2 creates a fresh file when relaunched, but custom settings return to defaults, so expect to configure them again. Follow Bungie’s CVARS guide and use its instructions for locating the file.

If you play on PlayStation or Xbox

Do not apply PC-only driver or CVARS steps to a console. For MARMOT or NIGHTINGALE, Bungie’s console guidance includes quitting the game, clearing the console cache, and restarting. Use the directions for your specific platform in the relevant support article rather than substituting a PC file-repair procedure.

When to reinstall or seek platform support

Reinstalling is an escalation step, not a universal first fix. Use it only after the applicable update, cache, restart, and file-repair steps have failed. Bungie’s NIGHTINGALE guidance says persistent problems after reinstalling and cache or file steps may involve damaged or malfunctioning hardware, and suggests checking whether other games also work properly. If other titles fail too, contact the platform or hardware support channel for diagnosis rather than replacing a specific component based on a Destiny 2 crash alone.
