Skyborne is among the most visible races in the World of Warcraft Forever beta, but there is no audited player-count data showing it is objectively one of the beta’s most popular. The race costs $29.99/€29.99 through the Skyborne Heroic Pack, on top of the subscription or Game Time needed to play Forever, which explains both its visibility and the backlash.
What “most popular” means in the Forever beta
The strongest evidence for Skyborne’s popularity is observational. In an October 8 report, a GamesRadar writer said, “A huge chunk of the Beta players I see myself are playing as the race.” That indicates high visibility in the sessions that writer observed, not a measured share of every beta character.
There is no official Skyborne sales total, beta population count or representative survey of race choice. A Blizzard Forums thread circulated an analysis claiming 59% disapproval and 12% approval, but participants in the same discussion challenged its sampling and method. Forum users are more likely than the overall player base to post strong opinions, and some buyers may have purchased a pack for beta access rather than because they specifically wanted Skyborne. Those percentages should therefore be treated as community debate, not market research.
How much Skyborne costs and what you receive
Forever’s base access comes with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. The race is separately gated behind an expansion pack. Wowhead lists the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the least expensive pack that unlocks the race, at $29.99 in the United States and €29.99 in the eurozone.

| Skyborne Epic Pack | Includes the Heroic Pack benefits and beta access. | Beta access begins September 17, 2026; it also includes 30 days of Game Time beginning November 4, 2026. |
| Warcraft Forever Collection | Includes the Epic Pack benefits, Warcraft III: Reforged and additional content. | Price is not stated in the published details. |
The beta runs from September 17 through October 21, 2026. Forever is listed for launch on November 4, 2026. Buying the Heroic Pack does not replace the subscription or Game Time requirement for the game itself.
Can you play Forever without buying Skyborne?
Yes. A player with the required subscription or Game Time can play the rest of Forever without purchasing the Skyborne pack. Skipping the pack means giving up the Skyborne character option and Zephras Isle starting experience, along with the pack’s cosmetic and housing items. Beta access is attached to the higher-priced Epic Pack rather than being a general benefit of the base subscription.

Why the race is controversial
A separate paywall in a subscription game
The unusual part of the pricing model is the split: the main Forever experience is accessed through subscription or Game Time, while this playable race requires a separate shop purchase. Critics on the Blizzard Forums objected to paying about $30 for a race they did not request. That criticism describes player sentiment, not a published finding that the price is universally unacceptable.

Some forum participants argue that Skyborne is not sufficiently rooted in the classic Warcraft setting and see the race as a poor fit for a project marketed around older foundations. Blizzard’s stated premise is different: the studio says Forever has its own continuity and is focused on foundational Warcraft RTS lore rather than reproducing every later-era decision.

HD characters beside an SD world
Visual consistency is another source of criticism. GamesRadar reported Blizzard acknowledging that the high-definition Skyborne could look “jarring” beside standard-definition character and world models. That contrast is especially noticeable in shared zones, where the race’s newer rendering style sits next to older assets.
Blizzard’s explanation for adding Skyborne
TechRadar quoted Blizzard saying, “We have no plans to add races from WoW’s expansions at this time.” The studio also said, “Our main focus for the game is to build off the foundational lore of Warcraft,” while explaining that Forever operates in its own continuity. GamesRadar reported senior game designer Josh Greenfield saying the team “knew we wanted to add some sort of elves,” with the idea reportedly stemming from veteran Chris Metzen. That is interview reporting about the team’s development process, not an independently established lore history.

When the classic-style Skyborne model is expected
Players who prefer a standard-definition appearance should not expect it at launch. Blizzard’s update, as quoted by GamesRadar, says SD Skyborne player characters and SD druid forms are planned for early 2027. The work is scheduled after the November 4, 2026 launch, so the initial release uses the HD presentation that has drawn visual criticism.

- Buy the Heroic Pack if Skyborne’s abilities, identity or Zephras Isle experience are the reason you want to play Forever and you accept paying separately from your subscription or Game Time.
- Consider the Epic Pack only if beta access and the included Game Time matter to you; the race itself is already unlocked by the Heroic tier.
- Skip it if you want to evaluate Forever’s core systems without paying for a specific race, dislike the HD/SD mismatch, or are comfortable waiting for the planned early-2027 SD models.
The fair conclusion is narrower than the headline claim: Skyborne is conspicuous and apparently common in some observed beta sessions, but no public statistic proves it leads race selection across the entire beta. Its visibility may reflect genuine demand, the novelty of a paid race, and the fact that some higher-tier buyers entered the beta through the same purchase.
