First check whether the desktop shows any sign of power. No lights, fans, or sounds points to a power problem; lights or fans with no usable screen may indicate a startup, operating-system boot, or display issue instead. Identify which symptom you have before trying a fix.
What happens when you press the power button?
Watch and listen for lights, fans, beeps, and other activity. Also note whether a manufacturer logo, error message, or diagnostic light pattern appears. These clues help distinguish no power from a failed startup check, a boot problem, or a blank display. Dell’s guidance treats these as separate kinds of issues, not interchangeable descriptions of a computer that will not start. Dell explains the symptom differences.
- No signs of life: Continue with the external power checks below.
- Lights or fans, but no completed startup: Record any beeps, blinking lights, logo, or error. The computer may be failing its POST, the startup self-test, or have a boot issue.
- The computer seems to run, but the screen is blank: Check the monitor and its connection separately.
How to check the desktop’s external power path
- Check the power cord. Turn the desktop off if it has any response. Make sure the cord is firmly connected at both the computer and the wall outlet.
- Test the outlet. Try a known-working outlet or confirm the current outlet works with another device.
- Bypass intermediary equipment. If the desktop is connected through a power strip, extension, or UPS, temporarily connect it directly to a known-working wall outlet.
- Try another cord if available. Use only a known-good cord with a matching connector and electrical requirements. A desktop and monitor cord can be swapped for diagnosis only when they are the same type.
- Inspect before reconnecting. Look for cuts, exposed wires, heat damage, bent pins, or damage to the computer’s power inlet.
Do not use a damaged cord or adapter. Dell advises discontinuing use and contacting support about repair options. Dell’s desktop and all-in-one power guide covers these external checks.

A power reset is not one universal procedure for every desktop. Dell’s instructions for its desktop and all-in-one systems say to disconnect power and external devices, hold the power button for 30–35 seconds, then reconnect and test. Treat that timing as a Dell-documented step, not a general rule for other brands or models. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact computer before trying a reset.

When to use a power-supply self-test
Some Dell desktop models include an integrated power-supply built-in self-test (BIST). Where supported, its LED and fan response can help assess whether the power supply can deliver power. Availability and instructions vary by model, so consult the system manual or support rather than assuming your desktop has a BIST button.
A failed self-test does not, by itself, prove the power supply is the only faulty component; a connected component may also be involved. Do not replace a power supply based solely on a single symptom or test result. See Dell’s PSU troubleshooting guidance for the supported test and its interpretation.

If the desktop powers on but the screen stays black
- Check that the monitor has power and is switched on.
- Reseat the display cable at both ends, confirm it is connected to the correct video port, and select the matching input on the monitor.
- If available, test with a known-good display cable or another monitor.
If a manufacturer logo appears and startup then stops, or the computer beeps or flashes diagnostic lights, note the exact pattern and consult the manual for that model. If the computer passes its startup checks but cannot load the operating system, use boot-recovery guidance rather than treating it as a no-power problem. Dell’s symptom guide separates no power, POST, boot, and video problems.
