For a fast, reversible cleanup on Windows, right-click an empty part of the desktop, choose View, then clear Show desktop icons. Your files are still there; this only hides their desktop icons. For an everyday tidy-up, remove obsolete shortcuts, file documents in folders, and keep only frequently used items visible. On a Mac, use folders, Stacks, and Finder sorting to organize desktop items.
Hide desktop icons for a presentation or screen share
In Windows 11, right-click a blank area of the desktop, select View, and clear Show desktop icons. To show the icons again, repeat the steps and select the option. Hiding icons does not delete or move the files; you can still reach desktop files in File Explorer > Desktop. Microsoft says hiding icons can help create a cleaner appearance during a presentation or meeting screen share. See Microsoft’s Windows desktop icon instructions.
Organize Windows files for a lasting cleanup
- Review what is on the desktop. Separate shortcuts from documents and other files before removing anything.
- Remove shortcuts you no longer use. A shortcut is an access point; deleting an obsolete shortcut is different from deleting the original file. Keep only the shortcuts you regularly need.
- Move active documents into a few clearly named folders. File items where you can find them again rather than leaving every file on the desktop.
- Choose which built-in icons to display. Go to Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings and select only the system icons you want visible. Windows also lets you create shortcuts and resize desktop icons through its desktop controls.
Trim the Windows taskbar if it competes with the desktop
Open Taskbar settings to adjust alignment and choose which taskbar items appear. To reclaim more screen space, expand Taskbar behaviors and turn on Automatically hide the taskbar. It appears when you move the pointer to the bottom edge. Leave it visible if you prefer immediate access to navigation and pinned apps. Microsoft’s taskbar guidance covers these settings.

Go to Settings > Personalization > Themes to choose a theme or adjust its background and color options. A simple image or subdued color can make visible icons easier to scan; favor readable contrast and avoid a highly detailed picture that competes with them. Windows themes can coordinate the background, colors, sounds, and mouse cursor, and you can save a theme to reuse it. Organize a Mac desktop with folders, Stacks, and Finder options
Apple’s documented approach focuses on grouping and sorting desktop items rather than the Windows-style hide-icons toggle.
Group related items in a folder
Select the items you want together, then use New Folder with Selection to put them in one folder. This is useful when several related files should remain accessible without sitting separately on the desktop.

Use Stacks to group items automatically
Enable Use Stacks to group desktop items. You can group by kind, date, or tags, making it easier to browse a busy desktop without manually arranging every item.

Use View > Sort By to sort by name, kind, date added, size, or tags. For manual placement, set sorting to None; use Clean Up By when you want to arrange items according to a chosen rule. Open View > Show View Options to change icon size, grid spacing, and text size. Apple’s desktop organization guide describes these controls.

Choose the cleanup method that fits your desktop

When a desktop organizer app may help
Windows’ built-in controls are enough for hiding icons, removing shortcuts, and filing documents. If you want to keep many icons visible but grouped, Stardock describes Fences 6 as software for organizing desktop files, folders, and apps into groups, with sorting rules and visual customization. Stardock’s May 28, 2025 announcement said it was available starting at $9.99 at that time and reported more than 20 million downloads; that download figure is the company’s report, not an independent usage audit. Price and availability can change, so check Stardock’s Fences page for current details. An additional organizer is optional, not necessary for a clean desktop.
