A useful desk setup is one you adjust to your body, work, and equipment—not a universal arrangement. Start with screen position, comfortable keyboard and mouse placement, and manageable glare; then consider accessories such as a laptop stand or dock only if they solve a specific problem.
How should you arrange a desk for computer work?
Use a neutral, comfortable position as your starting point, then adjust the components. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) puts it plainly: “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.” Its computer workstation guidance recommends a balanced head and neck, relaxed shoulders, elbows close to the body and supported, wrists in line with the forearms, and feet flat on the floor.
Keep enough work surface for the monitor, keyboard, and pointing device, with room to move the mouse without reaching. A matte surface can help limit reflections, and an edge that is not sharp is more comfortable against the forearms. Leave adequate space beneath the desk for your legs. These are practical design considerations, not a substitute for adjusting the setup to your own reach and comfort.
How high and how far away should a monitor be?
Place the top of the display at or just below eye level, and center it in front of you so you are not repeatedly turning your neck. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC/NIOSH) advises placing an external monitor about an arm’s length away, with its top at or below eye level. WorkSafe Queensland likewise advises eye-level-or-below placement, while noting that a comfortable distance can vary with screen size. Adjust the distance if you find yourself leaning forward or straining to read.

OSHA’s workstation purchasing checklist recommends a desk deep enough to keep a monitor at least 20 inches from the eyes. That is a checklist criterion, not a universal ergonomic minimum or a rule that overrides individual comfort. The checklist also gives adjustable keyboard-height ranges of 22–30 inches for seated use and 36–46.5 inches for standing use, with the keyboard around elbow height. How do you set up a laptop for long periods at a desk?
A laptop creates a positioning tradeoff: raising its screen also raises its built-in keyboard. If you lift the laptop to bring the display closer to eye level, the keyboard may become uncomfortable to use. For extended work, CDC/NIOSH and WorkSafe Queensland recommend separating the display from the input devices: use an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse when practical, and position each independently.

If you do not have an external monitor, a stable support can raise the laptop screen. WorkSafe Queensland notes that a laptop stand or even a stable item such as books can serve this purpose. Pair a raised laptop with an external keyboard and pointing device if the built-in keyboard is no longer at a comfortable height. A stand is optional; stability and a comfortable input position matter more than buying a particular accessory.

Match the light to the task. OSHA advises using broad, bright lighting for printed materials, while limiting and focusing light for computer work. An adjustable task light lets you change its position, angle, and intensity as the work changes.

To reduce reflections, CDC/NIOSH recommends placing the screen perpendicular to windows or adjusting blinds, then tuning display brightness and contrast to the room. If you use both paper and a screen, arrange the lamp so it illuminates the page without shining into your eyes or reflecting from the display.
What should you check before choosing desk accessories?
Monitor stand or monitor arm
Both can help position a display. Compare height and angle adjustment, stability, desk footprint, clearance, and whether the screen can be centered without picking up glare. Choose a support that fits the desk and monitor securely; the goal is a stable, comfortable position, not a particular accessory type.

Laptop stand or separate monitor
A stand raises the laptop display while using less equipment, but the laptop’s keyboard rises with it. A separate monitor gives you more freedom to position the screen, while a separate keyboard and mouse let you keep the inputs at a comfortable height. Consider desk depth, viewing distance, screen size, stability, and whether you can comfortably use the built-in keyboard at the raised position.

A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee that a laptop will charge through a dock, drive the displays you need, or support every attached peripheral. Microsoft’s Windows docking recommendations describe USB-C data, USB Power Delivery, and display capabilities as relevant to docking. Before choosing a hub or dock, check the laptop maker’s current port specifications and the accessory’s supported display outputs, resolutions, charging wattage, and peripheral ports. Match those capabilities to your laptop and planned equipment rather than relying on the connector shape alone.

Desk lamp or room lighting
For screen-focused work, control glare and use light you can direct and dim. For work involving printed pages, broader, brighter light may be more useful. Adjustability helps when your tasks or room conditions change.
Full sit-stand desk or tabletop unit
A full height-adjustable desk can provide more freedom to change working height, but needs sufficient space and a stable work surface. A tabletop sit-stand unit can be an alternative where replacing the desk is impractical; check that it fits securely and supports the equipment. WorkSafe Queensland cautions that tabletop units can reduce available work area and forearm support. In either case, consider surface depth, stability, equipment load, keyboard and forearm room, and how easily the height changes. OSHA’s checklist also recommends a height-adjustable surface that moves smoothly.

Build regular breaks and posture changes into computer work rather than waiting until you feel uncomfortable. In a 2020 bulletin, CDC/NIOSH reported that overall musculoskeletal discomfort and eyestrain were significantly lower when hourly five-minute breaks supplemented conventional breaks taken twice daily. The cited bulletin passage does not provide an effect size or full study details, so this finding should not be treated as a guaranteed outcome for every person. Even without following that exact schedule, periodically looking away from the screen, standing, and changing position can interrupt long stretches of fixed posture.
