Choose a desk mount monitor arm by compatibility first, not by appearance or a generic “best” list. Confirm your monitor’s weight, VESA hole pattern, chassis depth and the desk’s thickness before comparing features. A dual arm must meet both the per-screen limit and the combined limit. For example, Ergotron’s MXV dual arm accepts 7–20 lb per display, up to 40 lb combined, and VESA 75×75 or 100×100 mm, but its clamp only fits desks 0.47–1.25 inches thick. Those are model-specific specifications, not universal standards.
This guide turns the published specifications for the Ergotron MXV, Humanscale M8 Pro and Humanscale M2 Pro into a buying and installation process. It also explains when a clamp, grommet, dual arm, heavy-duty arm or laptop tray makes sense—and where a stated capacity can be reduced by a deep or unusually large screen.
Start with the four compatibility checks
A monitor arm is safe and useful only when the display, mounting hardware and desk are compatible. Collect these measurements before looking at colors, cable channels or promotional claims.
1. Weigh the monitor as it will be mounted
Use the monitor’s published weight without its factory stand, if that figure is available. If the manufacturer gives several weights, use the heaviest configuration you intend to mount, including an attached webcam, speaker bar or other permanent accessory. Compare that number with the arm’s per-display range. A dual arm can have a limit for each screen and a separate maximum for both screens together.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not treat a dual arm’s total capacity as permission to exceed its per-arm limit. The MXV, for instance, is specified for 7–20 lb on each display and 40 lb maximum for the pair. Two 20 lb screens meet both figures; one 22 lb screen fails the per-display requirement even though the combined weight could remain below 40 lb.
2. Identify the VESA hole pattern
Look at the square mounting holes on the rear of the monitor or in its manual. The MXV lists VESA FDMI MIS-D 100/75, which means it supports both 100×100 mm and 75×75 mm patterns. A monitor with a different pattern needs a model-specific adapter, and an adapter must not be assumed compatible merely because the diagonal screen size is similar.
Check that the supplied screws match the monitor’s threaded depth. If the arm’s hardware is too long, use the manufacturer-approved spacers rather than forcing a screw into the display.
The Tool Desk

A clamp needs a solid, accessible edge. Measure the desktop thickness at the intended location, including any lip or reinforcement that the clamp must pass. The MXV two-piece clamp is specified for 0.47–1.25-inch edges. Other arms can have different ranges, so never transfer this measurement to another model.
A grommet mount is an alternative when the desk has a suitable through-hole. It bolts through the surface instead of gripping the rear edge. Confirm the required hole diameter, clearance below the desk and whether the selected arm includes the grommet hardware. Ergotron summarizes the underlying safety requirement this way: “Because of how it moves, a monitor arm requires secure attachment to a surface—it either clamps to the surface’s edge or screws on through a grommet hole.”
4. Account for depth, size and clearance
Measure how far the monitor projects backward from its VESA plate, not just its diagonal size. Ergotron notes that a display deeper than 3.5 inches may diminish the MXV’s capacity. A screen can therefore be within the stated weight range yet still reduce the arm’s usable load or adjustment behavior because of leverage.

Also check the space behind the desk, the distance to a wall and the position of shelves or a window. An arm can be strong enough to hold a screen but unable to swing it through the position you want if the base, wall or another monitor blocks its path.

Which type fits your setup?
One ordinary monitor
For a single display, start with the monitor’s weight and VESA pattern, then choose the smallest arm that leaves a sensible margin within its specified range. A lighter arm is usually easier to position when the display is light; an unnecessarily heavy arm can add bulk without solving a compatibility problem. The Humanscale M2 Pro is described for lighter monitors up to 22 lb, while the listed M2.1 configuration is limited to one monitor up to 15.5 lb. Use the exact configuration name when checking the limit.
Two matching or mixed displays
A dual setup requires four checks: each monitor must fit its arm, both monitors together must fit the combined limit, both VESA patterns must be supported, and the desk must withstand the attachment at the chosen location. The MXV is a concrete example: each display must be between 7 and 20 lb, and the pair must not exceed 40 lb. If one screen is below the minimum or above the maximum, the specification does not establish compatibility.
Mixed-size screens can also require different arm heights or offsets. Verify that the arm’s range lets the smaller display sit where you need it without forcing the larger display into a tilted or obstructed position.
Heavy, deep or curved displays
Heavy displays need an arm whose stated range actually includes their weight, not merely an arm marketed for a large diagonal. Humanscale describes the M8 Pro for one display from 9 to 50 lb. That is a single-display specification; its optional dual configuration is instead stated as two displays up to 12 lb each.

Curvature does not by itself determine compatibility. The important questions are the monitor’s actual weight, VESA pattern and depth. A deep curved chassis can create more leverage, so apply any depth warning from the arm manufacturer. For the MXV, Ergotron specifically warns that more than 3.5 inches of depth may diminish capacity.
A monitor plus a laptop
Some arms can carry a notebook tray in place of a second display, but the tray is not automatically included. Ergotron lists Notebook Tray part 50-193-200 as an accessory for configuring the MXV. Verify that the tray is approved for your MXV configuration and that the laptop’s weight falls within the accessory’s own instructions before ordering.
How to choose between the documented examples
Choose the MXV when its dual-arm limits match your measurements
The MXV is the clearest fit when you need two displays within the 7–20 lb per-screen range, have a 75×75 or 100×100 VESA pattern, and can clamp to a 0.47–1.25-inch desk edge. Its stated 17.8-inch extension range and 22.5-inch maximum reach help when the displays must move forward from the rear of the desk. Treat the 27-inch accommodation note carefully: Ergotron says screens up to 27 inches may be accommodated with reduced adjustment capability, so the nominal size does not promise the same movement as a smaller screen.
Its optional grommet mount is relevant only if your desk supports a through-hole installation, and the Notebook Tray is a separate, model-specific accessory. The listed 10-year warranty is part of the MXV listing; confirm regional terms before relying on it.
Choose the M8 Pro when one display is substantially heavier
The M8 Pro’s published single-display range of 9–50 lb covers monitors that exceed the lighter-arm category. If you want two screens, the optional crossbar configuration is specified for two displays up to 12 lb each, which is a different use case from the 50 lb single-screen figure. Confirm that the package you are buying includes the required crossbar and supports your VESA pattern and desk.
Choose the M2 Pro for a lighter display after checking the exact variant
Humanscale describes the M2 Pro for monitors up to 22 lb, but the listed M2.1 configuration accommodates one monitor up to 15.5 lb. Those numbers identify different configurations. Read the model label on the listing and match it to your monitor’s measured weight instead of assuming every M2-series arm has the 22 lb limit.

Installation: a compatibility-first procedure
Manufacturers’ instructions for the exact arm take precedence over this general sequence. Keep the display supported until every fastener is secure, and do not install on a fragile, hollow or damaged desk surface.
Recommended Free Tools
- Clear and inspect the location. Remove equipment from the rear edge or grommet area. Confirm that the desk is stable, the edge is intact and the arm can move without striking a wall, shelf or adjacent monitor.
- Measure again. Verify desk thickness, the available rear clearance, monitor weight, VESA spacing and the screen’s depth. This catches a mismatch before the arm is attached.
- Install the clamp or grommet base. Use the supplied hardware and the manufacturer’s tightening sequence. For a clamp, seat both contact surfaces squarely on the desk; for a grommet, ensure the bolt and lower plate have unobstructed access under the surface.
- Attach the arm sections. Keep joints in their least extended position while fastening them. Do not hang the monitor from an incompletely tightened joint.
- Prepare the monitor. Place it face-down only on a clean, padded surface approved for that purpose. Remove the factory stand if required and install the VESA plate with the correct screws and spacers.
- Mount the display with assistance. Larger or heavy screens should be lifted by two people. Engage every hook, latch or screw specified by the arm manufacturer before releasing the screen.
- Set the counterbalance or tension. Adjust only after the display is mounted. If the screen rises, falls or drifts, use the arm’s adjustment mechanism in small increments rather than forcing the joint.
- Route cables with slack. Leave enough loop for the full height and swivel range. A tight cable can pull the monitor, limit movement or unplug a connector.
- Test the complete range slowly. Move the display forward, backward, up, down and side to side while watching the clamp, grommet, joints and cables. Stop if the desk flexes, the base shifts or the monitor tilts unexpectedly.
Common fit problems and fixes
The monitor is under or over the stated weight range
An arm with a minimum weight can fail to hold a very light screen in position, while an overweight screen can overload the joints or attachment. Recheck the monitor-only weight and select a model whose published range contains it. Do not compensate for an over-limit display by tightening a screw harder.
The VESA holes do not line up
Measure the horizontal and vertical spacing in millimetres and compare it with the arm’s supported patterns. A 100×100 display is not the same as a nearby proprietary pattern. Use an adapter only when the arm and monitor manufacturers approve that combination.
The clamp does not fit the desk
Measure the actual clamping surface, not the thickest part of the desktop. If it falls outside the model’s range—as it would for an MXV edge thinner than 0.47 inches or thicker than 1.25 inches—choose a compatible mount or a grommet installation rather than forcing the clamp.
The display sags after adjustment
First confirm the weight, depth and VESA plate are within specification. A deep display can create leverage even when its weight appears acceptable; Ergotron flags more than 3.5 inches as a possible capacity reduction for the MXV. If the monitor is compatible, follow the model’s tension-adjustment instructions. Persistent sag indicates a fit or hardware problem, not a reason to exceed the published limit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe arm cannot reach the desired position
Check the arm’s stated reach and extension before relocating the base. The MXV lists 22.5 inches from the back of its base to the VESA plate and a 17.8-inch extension range, but wall clearance and the monitor’s depth reduce usable room. A screen advertised as fitting a certain diagonal may also have reduced adjustment capability; the MXV’s up-to-27-inch note carries that qualification.

The desk moves when the monitor moves
Stop using the arm until the attachment is secure. A clamp needs a solid edge, and a grommet needs a sound through-hole and adequate underside clearance. Redistribute equipment or reinforce the mounting area only in a way approved for the desk and arm; do not rely on a loose clamp or a damaged surface.
Accessories and configuration details
Grommet mounts
A grommet can free the rear edge of a desk and provide a different load path, but it is not a universal upgrade. Check the required hole size, the desk’s construction and the exact arm package. The MXV listing identifies a grommet mount as an optional alternative to its two-piece clamp.
Laptop trays
A tray lets one arm position a laptop beside or below a monitor, but it changes the load and center of gravity. Ergotron lists Notebook Tray part 50-193-200 for the MXV. Verify the tray’s compatibility and weight instructions, and leave ventilation openings unobstructed.
Dual-display crossbars
Crossbars can simplify alignment, yet they create a configuration with its own capacity. The M8 Pro’s optional crossbar is specified for two displays up to 12 lb each; do not apply the M8 Pro’s 50 lb single-display figure to that setup.
A practical buying checklist
- Record each monitor’s weight without its factory stand, plus any permanent accessory.
- Record the VESA spacing in millimetres and confirm screw depth.
- Measure the monitor’s rear depth and note any manufacturer warning about deep or curved housings.
- Measure the desk edge thickness where the clamp will sit, or verify a suitable grommet hole.
- For two displays, check both the per-display and combined limits.
- Confirm the arm’s reach, height range and any reduced-adjustment note for your screen size.
- Check that the base, joints and cables have clearance through the full movement you need.
- Verify whether a grommet mount, crossbar or laptop tray is included or optional.
- Read the exact regional listing for warranty, availability and configuration because those details can change.
Bottom line: match the arm to the hardware you actually have
There is no meaningful universal “best” arm independent of the monitor and desk. The MXV is a documented dual-display option for compatible 7–20 lb screens, 75×75 or 100×100 VESA patterns and 0.47–1.25-inch desk edges, with explicit depth, size and reach qualifications. The M8 Pro addresses a heavier single display or a separate lighter dual configuration, while the M2 Pro targets lighter monitors and requires attention to the exact variant. Choose only after the weight, VESA, depth and attachment checks agree; then install with a secure base, balanced tension and enough cable slack for the movement you expect.
