Microfluidics offers a route to making covalent organic framework (COF) materials in forms such as crystalline fibres. A 2016 Chemistry World article presented the approach as a way to create distinctive COFs; related publication titles from 2016 and 2017 point to fibre synthesis, continuous production and direct printing as research directions. The available records establish those topics, not the method’s performance or range.
What does “drawing” a designer COF mean?
Here, “drawing” refers to shaping or producing a material, not sketching a molecular structure. Covalent organic frameworks are materials built from organic units joined by covalent bonds into extended frameworks. “Designer” signals the goal of tailoring the resulting material or its form; it does not, by itself, establish a particular composition or capability.
Matt Cude’s Chemistry World article, “Drawing designer COFs,” published June 24, 2016, used the subtitle “Microfluidics pave way for making unique covalent organic framework materials.” That framing connects microfluidic processing with the possibility of producing unusual COF forms.

Microfluidics handles very small volumes of liquid through small channels. In the COF work identified by the publication records, it is a synthesis approach: the researchers’ aim was to form COF material as fibres rather than discuss only framework chemistry in the abstract.

A 2016 Chemical Communications paper is titled “Crystalline Fibres of a Covalent Organic Framework through bottom-up Microfluidic Synthesis.” The title supports the specific connection between bottom-up microfluidic synthesis and crystalline COF fibres. It does not, on its own, provide experimental conditions or establish how the process compares with other ways of making COFs.
What do the later publication titles add?
A 2017 JoVE methods paper, “Microfluidic-based synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs): a tool for continuous production of COF fibers and direct printing on a surface,” identifies two further topics: continuous production of COF fibres and direct printing onto a surface.

- Fibre production: the title describes COF fibres as the product form.
- Continuous processing: it presents continuous production as a subject of the methods paper.
- Direct printing: it identifies printing onto a surface as a technique addressed by the paper.
These are publication-title claims about the work’s focus. Without the full methods and results, they should not be treated as proof of production speed, yield, scalability, precision, or suitability for a particular application.

What can be concluded—and what remains open?
The records trace a research direction from bottom-up microfluidic synthesis of crystalline COF fibres in 2016 to a 2017 methods paper addressing continuous fibre production and direct printing. They support the idea that microfluidics was being explored as a way to control how COF material is produced and presented.

They do not establish the monomers used, flow rates, yields, characterization results, material properties, or practical advantages over other synthesis methods. Nor do they show that direct printing or continuous production is broadly applicable to COFs. Those questions require the experimental details and data in the underlying papers.
