Build a daily nutrition check-in around three decisions: which local calendar date a record belongs to, how the API enforces ownership, and whether logged nutrient totals stay fixed or can change with their source data. A practical design uses one check-in per user per day, with optional food entries beneath it; validates input through serializers; scopes every read to the authenticated user; and calculates summaries on the server.

Choose what “daily” means before defining the models

Store the check-in’s day as a calendar date, separate from timestamps that represent exact events. For a product where “daily” means the user’s local day, choose a timezone policy and apply it consistently when assigning events to dates. Django REST Framework provides configurable date and datetime fields; behavior around datetime values depends in part on Django’s USE_TZ setting. See the DRF field documentation.

The framework cannot decide the product rule. Decide whether the timezone comes from a profile, a validated request value, or a product-wide setting. Also specify what happens if someone travels or changes their profile timezone: existing check-ins might stay attached to their original dates, or dates might be interpreted under the new setting. Make that behavior explicit rather than silently reassigning records.

Separate the daily check-in from its food entries

A check-in represents the user’s day; food entries represent the items logged for it. This keeps a day with no food details valid while allowing multiple entries when the user wants them.

Model Useful fields Purpose
DailyCheckIn Owner, day, optional notes or other check-in fields, created and updated timestamps One user-owned record for a calendar date
FoodEntry Parent check-in, food identifier or locally created food, quantity, unit, and nutrient values or a food reference A logged food and the basis for its nutrition summary

If the product allows just one check-in per user per local date, enforce uniqueness for (owner, day) in the database. A serializer can catch a duplicate early and return a helpful validation response, but the database constraint is essential: simultaneous requests can both pass an application-level precheck. Catch the resulting integrity conflict and map it to the API behavior you choose.

Define predictable API routes and repeat-create behavior

An uncomplicated contract can expose a collection endpoint with an optional day filter, a create endpoint, and detail endpoints for reading or editing one check-in. A nested serializer can accept food entries with a check-in, or entries can have their own nested route.

Example route Typical purpose
GET /api/check-ins/?day=YYYY-MM-DD List the signed-in user’s check-ins, optionally filtered by day
POST /api/check-ins/ Create a check-in, optionally with nested entries
GET /api/check-ins/{id}/ Retrieve one of that user’s check-ins
PATCH /api/check-ins/{id}/ Partially update one of that user’s check-ins

Choose what a repeated create for the same day does: reject it as a conflict or validation error, return the existing record, or update it. Returning or updating the existing record can support retries, but must be deliberate and documented; the uniqueness constraint should still protect the data.

Validate entries with serializers and calculate totals on the server

DRF serializers validate incoming data and convert model instances or querysets to native representations. A ModelSerializer can provide a model-backed shortcut. When a serializer persists a model, its create or update method must save the instance. See the DRF serializer documentation.

Use explicit fields that match the contract: a date field for the check-in day, and decimal fields for quantities or nutrient amounts when decimal precision matters. Validate required fields, permitted ranges, units, and the structure of nested entries. Do not accept a client-supplied owner as authoritative.

Calculate summary totals on the server from validated, stored entries. Define the units and rounding rules, and avoid treating a client-submitted total as trusted data. If entries reference a food catalogue, preserve enough information to explain the calculation, including the selected food and portion basis. When stable historical totals matter, store the nutrient values used at logging time. If instead you recalculate against a changing catalogue, users’ old totals may change; document that trade-off.

Enforce privacy with authentication and owner-scoped queries

Authentication identifies the requester; permissions decide whether the requester may access a resource. DRF says authentication runs at the start of the view, before permission and throttling checks. Require authentication for personal records, set ownership from request.user on create, and filter the view’s queryset by that user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, the key pattern in a viewset is:

def get_queryset(self):
    return DailyCheckIn.objects.filter(owner=self.request.user)

def perform_create(self, serializer):
    serializer.save(owner=self.request.user)

Apply the owner filter to list queries as well as detail lookups. Object-level permission checks alone do not remove other users’ records from a list response. DRF’s guidance on permissions and authentication explains the distinction and the role of querysets in visibility.

Add food lookup only if the product needs it

A local catalogue or manual food entry can be enough for a first version. USDA FoodData Central is an optional source with REST endpoints for searching foods and retrieving food details; it is not required to build the check-in feature. Requests need a data.gov API key. The current FoodData Central API Guide documents a default limit of 1,000 requests per hour per IP address and warns that exceeding it may temporarily block the key. Check the live guide before deployment because API policies can change.

Keep the key on your server, not in a browser or mobile app and not in source control. Cache appropriate search results, set timeouts, handle rate-limit responses, and let users record food without lookup when the provider is unavailable.

FoodData Central’s records differ in provenance, coverage, and update cycle. Choose the dataset suited to the food and show the selected food and portion basis clearly; do not imply every nutrient is present or equally current. USDA’s data type documentation describes these distinctions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Data type What to know Update cycle
Foundation Foods Based on USDA analytical data April and October
Branded Foods Based on label data Monthly
FNDDS Compiled for dietary survey foods Every two years
SR Legacy Final release Final release was April 2018

Not all data types contain all nutrients, and portion or weight information varies by type. Retain the chosen food’s source identity and, where useful, source or version metadata. USDA states that FoodData Central data are public domain under CC0 1.0 Universal and asks users to list FoodData Central as the source; see its about and data-use information.

Use throttling for usage policy, not as a security barrier

DRF throttles can apply per-user or scoped request policies using Django’s cache. They are useful for service policy, but the framework warns that its built-in throttles use non-atomic operations and can be imprecise under concurrency. DRF states: “The application-level throttling that REST framework provides should not be considered a security measure or protection against brute forcing or denial-of-service attacks.” See the throttling documentation. Treat throttling as one operational control, not as a substitute for security measures.

Implementation checklist

  • Define the date and timezone policy, including travel and profile changes.
  • Model one daily parent record and optional child food entries.
  • Enforce owner-plus-day uniqueness in the database if only one record per day is allowed.
  • Specify repeated-create behavior and handle database conflicts.
  • Validate dates, quantities, units, and nested entries with serializers.
  • Set ownership from the authenticated request and scope every queryset to that owner.
  • Calculate summaries from validated stored entries, with explicit units and rounding.
  • Preserve food-source and portion details if historical totals need to remain explainable.
  • Keep external API keys server-side and make food lookup failure non-blocking.
  • Confirm behavior against the project’s Django, DRF, database, and authentication versions.
