To make seawater drinkable, it must first be desalinated using a system designed for seawater, then treated and handled to meet drinking-water safety requirements. A separate post-treatment step can add minerals or blend the water to improve its taste and stability. A remineralization cartridge alone does not remove seawater’s salt or make it safe to drink.
How do you make seawater drinkable?
Desalination removes dissolved salts, but producing potable water is a managed treatment process—not a single-filter claim. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes desalination as a significant barrier to hazards, but not necessarily an absolute one. Its safety guidance applies a Water Safety Plan approach across source water, treatment and final-water handling. WHO’s 2011 desalination guidance explains this system-wide approach.
Reverse osmosis is one commonly used desalination method. WHO’s technology factsheet also identifies electrodialysis, multi-effect distillation, solar distillation, multi-stage flash and nanofiltration. The available guidance does not establish a universal best method: suitability depends on the specific feedwater and system, and the method name alone does not establish whether the resulting water is safe.
For a household or other small installation, use equipment explicitly designed and rated for seawater feed, follow its operating and maintenance requirements, and verify the finished water through appropriate testing. A generic pitcher filter or a remineralization cartridge is not a substitute for seawater desalination. Boiling does not remove dissolved salt.

Why does desalinated water taste flat?
After desalination, water may contain few minerals and taste bland. WHO describes adding mineral constituents or blending desalinated water with mineral-rich water as post-treatment options. This step is called remineralization or stabilization. It can improve acceptability and help protect plumbing and distribution materials from corrosive water.
Taste and safety are different questions. Improving the flavor does not show that salt removal, contaminant control, disinfection or final-water handling was adequate. Adding minerals to untreated seawater does not make it potable.

What hazards does desalination need to manage?
Seawater can carry hazards beyond salt. WHO identifies concerns that can include harmful algal events, certain free-living bacteria, boron and bromide. Controls therefore depend on more than the desalination step: source-water assessment, suitable intake location and design, treatment, monitoring, and safe handling or blending all matter. WHO’s drinking-water guidelines set out a broader framework for managing water-quality risks.
WHO’s guidance recommends locally adapted drinking-water standards, preventive Water Safety Plans and independent surveillance. Those controls help determine whether a particular supply is safe; water that looks clear or tastes pleasant is not thereby proven safe.

Which desalination method should you choose?
There is no universal ranking in the WHO material. Compare a specific system against the conditions and safeguards that matter for its intended use rather than choosing by method name alone.
- Feedwater: Confirm the system is designed for seawater at the salinity and conditions of the intended source.
- Capacity and energy: Check the stated production capacity and energy requirements for the actual installation and operating conditions.
- Pretreatment and upkeep: Determine what source-water pretreatment is required and what routine operation and maintenance the system demands.
- Post-treatment: Establish whether the output needs remineralization, stabilization or blending before distribution.
- Safety verification: Identify the monitoring, testing and handling controls used to show that the finished water meets applicable drinking-water requirements.
WHO’s 2025 technology factsheet characterizes desalination as high-cost and requiring extensive operation and maintenance in its small-island technology context. That context is not a universal cost estimate, and it does not establish the relative cost or performance of a particular household system.

What to check before using desalinated water
- Confirm seawater suitability. Read the equipment specifications and verify that the unit is designed for seawater—not merely brackish water or ordinary tap water.
- Follow the complete treatment process. Use the specified pretreatment, desalination and post-treatment stages; do not treat a taste-improving cartridge as the salt-removal stage.
- Maintain the system as specified. Operating and maintenance needs are part of safe performance, not optional extras.
- Verify water quality. Use appropriate testing and applicable local drinking-water standards rather than relying on appearance or taste.
- Protect water after treatment. Keep storage, distribution and handling within the system’s safety controls so finished water is not compromised.
WHO’s drinking-water guidelines Q&A, dated 10 August 2026, describes the guidelines as support for managing risks to drinking-water safety and helping regulators develop national standards. Its framework combines standards, preventive Water Safety Plans and independent surveillance.
