A dependency graph shows relationships that exist in a codebase; it does not, by itself, tell you whether those relationships are intentional or allowed. To decide whether a proposed dependency belongs, you need explicit project rules and a way to check changes against them. Some frameworks give a graph defined semantics and validation, making it part of an architectural model—but a graph alone does not reveal intent.

What does a dependency graph tell you?

A dependency graph represents relationships found in a system: for example, which service imports a repository, which route accesses a database, or which modules depend on one another. It helps answer questions such as “What is this project actually doing?” and “What might a change to this module affect?”

Graph analysis can also help identify cycles, highly connected modules, and dependencies that may be unstable. A 2019 paper presented at the IEEE International Conference on Software Architecture Companion discusses dependency graphs as a way to represent module views and examines dependency-based architectural smells, including cyclic dependencies, hub-like nodes, and nodes with unstable dependencies. These are useful signals for investigation, not automatic judgments about whether a relationship is approved. Read the 2019 IEEE ICSA Companion paper.

What can’t the graph tell you?

An observed edge does not explain why it exists or whether the team wants to keep it. A route that reaches a database directly might be an accepted design, a legacy shortcut, or an accidental dependency. The graph records the relationship; project intent determines how to judge it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, a dependency on a payment provider is not a violation merely because it appears in the graph. It becomes a violation if the project has established that provider access must go through an adapter. Likewise, a graph cannot independently decide that persistence access belongs only in server-side code, that one module must not depend on another, or that a particular service owns authorization.

As Vlad Zoff puts it, “A dependency graph is not architecture.” The useful interpretation is not that graphs have no architectural value, but that observed structure does not automatically contain the rules the team intends to enforce. Read Zoff’s article, posted October 1, 2026.

How facts, policy, and verification fit together

Information Question it answers
Observed dependency graph What currently depends on what, and what might a change affect?
Explicit project policy Which dependencies are allowed, forbidden, or permitted as named exceptions?
History and frequency How did a pattern arise, and how common is it?
Verification Did a proposed change violate a stated constraint?

These are complementary kinds of information, not competing ways to describe a codebase. History and frequency can help a team investigate a pattern, but neither should silently become policy. A dependency’s age or popularity does not establish that it is an intentional rule.

Turn architectural intent into checks

To check whether a change respects architecture, first state the constraints in terms the team can evaluate. Name the boundary, define which dependencies are allowed, and document exceptions rather than leaving them implicit. For example, “payment-provider access must pass through the adapter” is more actionable than “keep the payment code clean.”

  1. Identify the relationship. Use the graph to find relevant imports, calls, routes, or module edges.
  2. Decide the intended rule. Specify which side may depend on which, and whether the rule applies universally or has explicit exceptions.
  3. Record the rule and exceptions. Make the boundary visible to the team and to any checks that enforce it.
  4. Account for existing violations. If a codebase already breaks the desired rule, baseline those violations where appropriate so checks can focus on newly introduced ones.
  5. Check proposed changes against policy. A violation is meaningful when it conflicts with a stated constraint, not merely because a new edge appears.

Zoff recommends using checks to catch newly introduced violations while accounting for existing ones. The article describes Guard’s core checks as deterministic and local; that characterization is the author’s description of that product, not an independently established benchmark or a universal property of architecture tools.

When can a graph be part of an architecture model?

A graph can carry architectural meaning when a system gives it explicit semantics and uses those semantics to validate or operate the system. Kora’s documentation describes a typed, explicit, compile-time application graph as a model for dependencies, lifecycle, module composition, operational wiring, and tooling. That is a framework-specific example: it does not mean every dependency graph expresses architecture intent. See Kora’s application-graph documentation, dated September 2, 2026.

A related distinction is that an architectural pattern is more than a recurring shape in a graph. The Open SWE Book defines one as “a reusable, named arrangement of modules and connectors that has repeatedly solved a recurring design problem.” That definition describes patterns; it does not establish that any observed dependency is an approved pattern. Read Chapter 7, “Architectural Patterns”.

Questions to ask when changing an unfamiliar codebase

  • “What is this project actually doing?” Use the graph and source code to establish current relationships.
  • “Which parts of that behavior has the team decided to preserve?” Look for documented boundaries and policies rather than inferring intent from frequency or age.
  • “Am I allowed to make this dependency?” Check the applicable rule and any recorded exception; if neither exists, the graph alone cannot answer.
