Short answer: Denuvo Anti-Tamper is designed to require an internet connection for a game’s first launch, not for every later launch. Irdeto’s 2020 explanation says subsequent launches can work offline, although installing a game update or making a significant hardware change can trigger another online validation. That promise applies to Denuvo’s layer only. Steam, the EA app, Ubisoft Connect, a publisher account, and the individual game’s licence terms can add separate requirements. As a result, whether you can play offline is a title-specific question, not a simple yes-or-no property of “Denuvo.”
What Denuvo Anti-Tamper does
Denuvo Anti-Tamper is a software protection layer used by some PC games to make unauthorised modification and redistribution more difficult. It is not the same thing as a storefront client, a publisher launcher, or an account system. A game can use Denuvo alongside Steam, the EA app, Ubisoft Connect, or another activation service.
That distinction matters because each layer can make its own check. Denuvo may accept an offline launch while the store client is not prepared for offline use, or a publisher launcher may still require an account. Conversely, a storefront’s offline mode does not override a game’s own licence or launcher requirements.

Irdeto’s 2020 vendor explainer describes Denuvo’s general operating model this way: the player is online at first launch so the licence can be revalidated, and “Any subsequent game launches do not require an online connection.” The same document says the Denuvo server is built to allow secure offline play. These are vendor-level statements, not a guarantee that every title, build, region, or launcher behaves identically.

In practical terms, Denuvo answers one narrow question: can the protected executable verify its licence after its initial activation? It does not answer whether cloud saves, multiplayer, achievements, subscriptions, mod services, or a publisher account are available without a network. Those features can have their own authentication and connectivity rules even when the single-player executable starts normally.
How a Denuvo-protected launch works
1. Installation and account setup
Before the first launch, the game may need to be installed through a storefront and associated with a store or publisher account. The game’s EULA can impose additional registration or client requirements. Installing the files while offline is not necessarily enough to make the first run possible.
Check whether the purchase key is tied to Steam, the EA app, Ubisoft Connect, or another account. A download client may also need to be installed even when the game files themselves are already on the drive. If the publisher uses a separate launcher, signing into that launcher and accepting its terms can be part of activation rather than an optional step.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. First launch validation
On first launch, the game normally needs an internet connection. According to Irdeto’s 2020 description, Denuvo uses that connection to revalidate the licence. A separate store or publisher service may authenticate at the same time. If any required service is unavailable, the game may not complete activation even when the files are already present.
“First launch” generally means the first successful run on that installation or machine, not every time a shortcut is clicked. The exact sequence can vary: a storefront can open first, a publisher client can request credentials, and the game can then perform its own validation. Keep all of those clients updated while connected so an incomplete setup is not mistaken for a Denuvo failure.
3. Later launches
After successful activation, Denuvo’s stated design allows ordinary subsequent launches without an internet connection. “Offline” here means that Denuvo itself does not need a live connection for that launch. It does not mean that every other component of the game is offline-capable.
Single-player content is the most likely use case for this arrangement. Online multiplayer, cloud synchronization, store pages, social features, and account recovery obviously need connectivity. Some games may also show a launcher sign-in screen before handing control to an executable, so test the complete path rather than assuming that a desktop shortcut bypasses every service.

4. Events that can require reconnecting
Irdeto identifies two circumstances that can send a previously offline player back online: downloading and installing a game update, and significantly changing the computer’s hardware configuration. The wording does not define one universal hardware threshold. Treat a major component change as a possible revalidation event rather than assuming an exact part-by-part rule.
An update can change more than the game’s content. A new executable, a changed licence component, or a refreshed launcher can invalidate the offline-ready state until the title is started online again. Similarly, replacing several major components at once can look different to an activation service from a routine driver update. The vendor description does not promise a fixed grace period or a precise list of triggering parts.

Denuvo compared with other PC DRM layers
The useful comparison is not “which DRM is offline?” but when each layer authenticates, what can interrupt offline access, and whether another client is involved.
| Layer or service | Initial online event | Ordinary later offline play | Known or possible blockers | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Denuvo Anti-Tamper | Irdeto says first launch requires an online licence revalidation. | Irdeto says subsequent launches do not require an online connection. | A game update or significant hardware change can require another connection. | This is Irdeto’s 2020 general description; the individual title and its other DRM layers control the actual experience. |
| Steam Offline Mode | Steam must be prepared for offline use, and the game may have its own first-launch requirement. | Steam offers an Offline Mode, but not every title will start in it. | Steam Support says a client or game-file update can prevent a game marked “100% – Ready” from starting offline. | Steam’s client setting does not prove that a particular game is independently offline-capable. |
| EA app | EA says a PC game using the EA app requires an EA account and internet connection for authentication and licence verification; EA Help says the game must first have been launched online. | EA provides an Offline Mode after that online launch, subject to the title’s requirements. | The EA app or game may need authentication, updates, or account access. | The EA User Agreement describes a limit of five unique machines in a rolling 24-hour period for launching and accessing an EA PC game. That is agreement language, not proof of an online check on every launch. |
| Ubisoft Connect and Ubisoft DRM | Ubisoft’s general EULA says an online connection may be required during installation and/or first launch. | Offline behaviour depends on the product, client, and EULA. | A Ubisoft account or Connect client may be required; registration can be required on a new computer. | Requirements are conditional and product-specific. One Ubisoft product EULA gives a five-computer activation limit in 24 hours, with no total computer limit for that product. |
This table describes activation layers, not a ranking of which company has “better” DRM. A title can combine two, three, or more rows. For example, a Steam purchase may involve Steam’s offline state, Ubisoft Connect sign-in, and Denuvo’s first-launch validation. The strictest active requirement determines whether the game starts.
Why “Denuvo offline” and “Steam Offline Mode” are different questions
Steam Offline Mode is a state of the Steam client. Denuvo Anti-Tamper is a protection component inside a game. Activating Steam’s setting does not remove the need to complete a game’s first launch, satisfy a publisher launcher, or install any required update.
Steam Support specifically warns that a game can display “100% – Ready” and still report that it cannot start in Offline Mode. The stated cause is that the Steam client and/or game files need updating. This is a practical preparation problem: a player can have all visible game content installed and still be blocked because the client has not reached an offline-ready state.
Steam’s behaviour also does not establish what a Denuvo-protected executable will do. The two systems should be checked separately: first confirm the game’s activation and launcher requirements, then prepare Steam for offline use.
Do not confuse an offline client with an unavailable server. Offline Mode can preserve access to installed content, but it cannot restore a lapsed account, repair corrupted files, or download a patch. If Steam has queued an update or changed the game’s build, finish that work before disconnecting and test once with the network disabled.

How the EA app changes the calculation
Some games bought through Steam still use the EA app. EA Help directs players to the Steam store listing to determine whether that additional app is required. If it is, Steam Offline Mode alone is not the complete preparation.
EA’s user agreement says the EA app uses an EA account and an internet connection to authenticate and verify a PC-game licence. EA Help gives a concrete prerequisite for offline play: the game must have been launched online at least once. That online launch is separate from the question of whether Denuvo is present.
The same agreement describes launching and accessing an EA PC game on five unique machines in a rolling 24-hour period. This is a contractual limit stated by EA, not a universal rule for all EA games and not evidence that each launch requires a connection. A player changing computers should therefore check the current agreement and the title’s instructions rather than infer a fixed Denuvo limit.

EA’s wording also illustrates why “requires the EA app” and “requires the internet every time” are not interchangeable claims. The app can be necessary for authentication and still offer an offline state after a successful online launch. Whether that state survives an update, account change, or move to another machine is controlled by the app and the particular game’s licence.

Ubisoft’s general end-user licence agreement says DRM may install additional components and may require an online connection during installation and/or first launch. It also says a Ubisoft account and Connect client may be required to play or access online services and features. The wording is deliberately conditional: the product determines which requirements apply.
A product-specific Ubisoft EULA hosted on Steam illustrates how layers can be combined. It explicitly identifies both “DRM SOFTWARE” and “DENUVO ANTI-TAMPER PROTECTION TECHNOLOGY.” The same document says an online connection may be required during installation or first launch, and separately requires a Ubisoft Connect account, client, and registration when activating on a new computer.
That EULA also states that the product may be activated on no more than five distinct computers within 24 hours, while imposing no total limit on the number of computers. This is an example for that product, not a blanket Ubisoft or Denuvo policy. A different game can have different terms.
The example is useful when evaluating a used laptop, a desktop upgrade, or a family computer. Moving the files is not necessarily the same as activating the product on the new machine. Registration, account access, and the product’s machine-count language all need to be satisfied, even if the original computer could launch offline.
How to prepare a game for legitimate offline play
- Read the current store listing. Look for required launchers, third-party accounts, internet requirements, and DRM disclosures. A Steam purchase can still require a publisher client.
- Read the game’s EULA. Check for first-launch activation, account registration, machine limits, and language about online services. Product-specific terms take precedence over assumptions based on a DRM brand.
- Install every available update while online. Irdeto identifies installing a game update as a reason to reconnect. Steam Support likewise says an outdated client or game files can block Offline Mode.
- Launch the game successfully while connected. Complete sign-in, licence validation, and any publisher-client registration. For EA app games, EA Help explicitly requires at least one online launch before Offline Mode.
- Enable the relevant client’s offline setting. Do this while the computer is still connected, following the client’s current controls. A client that has not been placed in an offline-ready state may refuse to start later.
- Test before travelling or losing connectivity. Disconnect deliberately and start the game once. This catches missing launchers, pending updates, expired sessions, and account prompts while you can still reconnect.
- Avoid major hardware changes immediately before an offline session. Irdeto says a significant hardware configuration change can prompt another Denuvo validation.
- Document the working setup. Note which account owns the game, which launcher opens first, and which build was tested. This is especially useful when several clients install separate shortcuts or when a household has more than one PC.
- Keep recovery options available. If the title uses a publisher account, make sure you can access the account and its recovery email before going offline. Offline mode cannot solve a password reset or a suspended-account problem.
Troubleshooting: what a failed offline launch usually means
| Symptom | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The game asks for internet access on its first run. | Denuvo, a storefront, or a publisher launcher. | Reconnect, finish activation, and complete the first successful launch before trying offline play. |
| Steam says the game is “100% – Ready” but it cannot start in Offline Mode. | Steam client or local game files. | Reconnect and allow Steam and the game to update, then prepare Offline Mode again. Steam Support identifies an update state as the cause of this message. |
| A game bought on Steam opens another client. | Publisher launcher requirement. | Check the Steam listing and the publisher EULA; install, sign in to, and test that client while online. |
| Offline play stopped after a patch. | Game update and possible revalidation. | Reconnect, install the patch, and complete any licence check. Irdeto lists a downloaded and installed update as a possible trigger. |
| Offline play stopped after replacing major hardware. | Denuvo or another activation service. | Reconnect and revalidate the licence. The available Denuvo description refers to significant hardware changes without defining an exact threshold. |
| The launcher reports an activation or machine limit. | Product licence or publisher account. | Read that game’s EULA. Limits such as five computers in 24 hours are product or agreement terms, not universal DRM behaviour. |
If a failure appears only when the network is disconnected, identify which window appears first. A Steam error points to the storefront state; an EA or Ubisoft sign-in prompt points to the publisher layer; an in-game activation message points more directly to the title’s own protection. This is not definitive diagnosis, but it narrows the document or support page you need to consult.
Do not repeatedly delete configuration files or reinstall while offline. Those steps can remove the locally stored state that made offline launching possible and force another online activation. Reconnect first, update the client and game, and then repeat the clean test.
How to judge a game before buying it
Do not rely on the Denuvo label alone
The presence of Denuvo tells you that the game includes one anti-tamper layer. It does not tell you whether Steam, EA, Ubisoft Connect, or another service must remain installed, whether an account is required, or how a particular build handles updates.
Separate “first launch” from “every launch”
Many disputes about offline play come from treating an initial activation requirement as a permanent always-online requirement. Irdeto’s stated Denuvo model distinguishes those events. The practical question is whether another layer imposes an additional check after activation.

Look for current, title-specific language
Store pages can change, clients can change, and EULAs can differ between products from the same publisher. Check the current listing, the game’s EULA, and the launcher’s support instructions immediately before purchase or travel. If the documents are conditional, treat the requirement as conditional rather than assuming the most permissive interpretation.
Ask four concrete questions
Before buying, ask: Which client starts the game? Is an account beyond the store account required? Must the first launch be online? What events can force revalidation later? Finding those answers is more useful than trying to classify an entire publisher as “offline” or “always online.”

“Denuvo means always online.”
Irdeto’s 2020 explanation says the opposite for ordinary later launches: first-launch validation is online, while subsequent launches do not require an internet connection. Updates, hardware changes, and other DRM layers can still require a reconnection.
“Steam Offline Mode guarantees every Steam game will work.”
Steam Support expressly documents cases where a game marked ready cannot start offline because the client or files need updating. Individual games can also require a publisher launcher or first-launch activation.
“A five-computer limit is a Denuvo rule.”
The five-computer examples in the available material come from EA agreement language and one Ubisoft product EULA. They are not evidence of a universal Denuvo limit.
“A game purchased on Steam has no other account requirement.”
EA and Ubisoft documents show that a storefront purchase can coexist with a publisher account and client. Always check the title’s listing and licence terms.
“Offline means every feature works.”
Offline launch normally refers to starting installed software. Multiplayer matchmaking, cloud saves, entitlement changes, account recovery, and newly downloaded content still depend on the relevant online service.
What you can and cannot conclude
You can reasonably expect Denuvo’s vendor-described design to permit offline launches after first activation, provided no revalidation event or separate service intervenes. You cannot infer that every Denuvo game will launch offline from the Denuvo label alone. The decisive evidence is the combination of the current game listing, its EULA, the required storefront state, and any publisher-launcher instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play a Denuvo game offline?
Usually, Irdeto says ordinary launches after first activation can be offline. A patch, significant hardware change, or separate storefront or publisher requirement can require you to reconnect, so verify the specific title.
Does Denuvo require an internet connection every time I start a game?
No. Irdeto’s 2020 vendor explanation says first launch requires online licence validation and that subsequent launches do not require an online connection. Other DRM layers can impose their own checks.
Is Steam Offline Mode enough for a Denuvo game?
Not necessarily. Steam’s client must be prepared, the game must complete any first-launch activation, and a publisher launcher may also be required. Steam Support notes that outdated client or game files can block offline startup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Launch it successfully online at least once, complete account and licence authentication, install updates, and then enable the EA app’s offline state. Check the Steam listing if you bought the game there to see whether the EA app is required.
Can a game require both Ubisoft Connect and Denuvo?
Yes. A Ubisoft product EULA hosted on Steam explicitly names both DRM software and Denuvo Anti-Tamper, alongside Ubisoft Connect account, client, and registration requirements.
What happens after I replace major PC hardware?
A significant hardware configuration change can trigger another Denuvo validation according to Irdeto’s description. Reconnect and complete the licence check before expecting offline launches to resume.
Are five-computer activation limits universal?
No. EA’s agreement describes five unique machines in a rolling 24-hour period, and one Ubisoft product EULA describes five computers in 24 hours. Those are product or agreement terms, not a universal Denuvo rule.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Denuvo’s stated model is online first launch, followed by offline-capable launches unless an update or significant hardware change prompts revalidation. Steam Offline Mode, EA app Offline Mode, Ubisoft Connect, account rules, and product-specific EULAs can add separate conditions. Confirm every layer for the exact game, finish activation and updates while online, and test a disconnected launch before relying on it during travel or an outage.
