The Denon AH-C500W is a good match for listeners who want lightweight, open earbuds that leave traffic, colleagues and announcements audible. It is a poor fit for anyone expecting noise cancelling, strong isolation or a locked-in fit for vigorous movement. The decisive trade-off is simple: you get awareness and no ear tips, but you also accept sound leakage, outside-noise interference and a fit that may shift.
What the Denon AH-C500W is
The AH-C500W is a true-wireless, open-fit earbud. There are no silicone ear tips sealing the ear canal, and Denon explicitly lists neither active noise cancelling (ANC) nor a transparency mode. Ambient sound remains audible because the acoustic design is open rather than because an electronic passthrough mode is processing it.
That makes the model fundamentally different from sealed in-ear headphones. An open earbud can feel less intrusive and lets you hear what is happening around you, but it cannot provide the same isolation on a train, airplane or busy street. People nearby may also hear part of your music, particularly at higher volume.

TechRadar reviewer Tom Bedford found the earbuds light and the case compact, but reported that the fit shifted during walks and that repositioning could trigger the touch controls.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Who should buy them?
- Choose the AH-C500W if you want to hear nearby people, cyclists, announcements or household sounds without enabling a transparency setting.
- Choose them for desk work or relaxed listening when a sealed ear canal feels uncomfortable and maximum isolation is unnecessary.
- Look elsewhere if commuting noise, airplane engines, concentration in a loud office or a secure sports fit is your main problem.
- Expect a compromise if you share a room: the open design can leak audio, so private listening may require lower volume or a different style of earbud.
The decision is therefore about the open format first and sound preferences second. If you do not want an open earbud, the AH-C500W’s codec support and app controls cannot compensate for the missing seal and ANC.
Fit, comfort and awareness
What the open shape does well
Without ear tips, there is no silicone plug pressing into the ear canal. That can be preferable for people who dislike the occluded, plugged-up sensation of conventional in-ear headphones. The earbuds are also light by specification: Denon’s current product listing gives 4.5 grams per earbud.
Because the ear canal remains open, you can hear a doorbell, a conversation or a warning sound while audio is playing. This is passive awareness; there is no transparency microphone mode to switch on, tune or disable.

Open earbuds depend heavily on the shape of your outer ear. Bedford’s July 2025 TechRadar review found the AH-C500W could move during walks. He also noted that adjusting the buds sometimes activated the touch controls. That is one reviewer’s experience rather than a laboratory fit result, but it is an important warning for buyers who cannot tolerate movement.
A practical test is to wear one earbud while walking, turning your head and speaking before committing to a purchase. If the bud needs frequent repositioning, every adjustment risks an unwanted play/pause or track command. The absence of ear tips also means there is no alternate tip size to change the contact point.
Leakage and privacy
An open acoustic path can let music escape. TechRadar reported audible leakage, especially at higher levels. In a quiet office, library or bed-sharing situation, people nearby may hear what you are playing. Lowering the volume reduces the risk but also reduces your ability to overcome environmental noise, which is already a limitation of this design.
How the sound is described
The AH-C500W uses Denon’s 12 mm free-edge bio-cellulose drivers. Denon provides an adjustable EQ through the Denon Headphones app, so you can change the tonal balance rather than being limited to a factory preset.

Bedford’s listening assessment was mixed: he found detail in some recordings but also reported peaks or distortion with certain instruments and genres. His summary was, “The audio quality of the AH-C500W is mixed, but that’s a mix of highs and lows.” This is an editorial listening opinion, not a measured frequency-response result or a universal prediction for every recording.
The manual lists a 20–20,000 Hz playback frequency range. That figure describes the stated specification, not the loudness, accuracy or quality of every frequency. Open earbuds also sound different from sealed models because the room and surrounding noise remain part of the listening experience.
Using the EQ sensibly
- Start with the default tuning so you know what the hardware sounds like before making changes.
- Use the app’s basic EQ for broad adjustments, such as reducing a sharp upper range or adding perceived warmth.
- Make changes with the same music and listening level you normally use; a louder setting can make a tonal change seem better even when it is only louder.
- Do not expect EQ to restore bass lost to an open fit or to remove traffic and conversation.
TechRadar described the app’s controls as limited, with a basic EQ and touch-control settings. That makes the app useful for light personalization, but it should not be treated as a full sound-calibration system.
Noise handling: awareness instead of cancellation
Denon states that the AH-C500W has no noise cancelling and no transparency mode. The open housing naturally allows environmental sound through, so there is no electronic cancellation for engine rumble and no sealed barrier for voices.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That behavior is helpful when you need situational awareness. It is less helpful when you need to concentrate. Bedford reported that outside noise affected his listening, which is the predictable consequence of combining an open fit with no ANC.
For a commute, compare the listening level you need with the level that remains comfortable and safe in your environment. Raising volume to overpower a train or road can increase fatigue and still will not produce the quiet background a sealed ANC model can provide. If blocking noise is your priority, compare ANC earbuds with ear tips instead of trying to solve the problem with the AH-C500W’s EQ.
Battery life and charging
Denon rates the earbuds for seven hours and the charging case for 24 hours total. The company says its test used a production AH-C500W in January 2025, a smartphone, a stereo AAC track and 50% volume. Your result can change with volume, codec, connection features, temperature, call use and other settings.

| Figure | What it represents | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 7 hours | Playback from the earbuds | Denon’s official specification; January 2025 test at 50% volume with a smartphone and stereo AAC track |
| 24 hours | Total playback including the charging case | Denon’s official specification under the same stated test conditions |
| 379 minutes | Measured battery result | Which? listing; its public page does not show the full expert verdict or all test conditions |
| At least three weeks of use | Reviewer’s period of ownership | TechRadar’s July 2025 hands-on use at home, in an office, on walks and at a gym; not a battery-cycle measurement |
These numbers should not be blended into one claim. The 379-minute result is a separate Which? measurement, while the three-week statement describes how long a reviewer used the product. Denon’s 24-hour figure remains the appropriate number when quoting the manufacturer’s specification.
Charging options
The case supports wireless charging. Denon says a 10-minute charge provides one hour of playback and lists three hours for a full case charge. The quick-charge figure is a stated allowance, so actual recovery can vary with charger, temperature and battery condition.
For planning, the seven-hour earbud rating covers a long workday for many listeners, but frequent calls, high volume or a noisy environment can reduce practical time. A short top-up is useful before a walk or commute, while the case is intended to provide the remaining charge away from an outlet.
Bluetooth, codecs and device features
The AH-C500W uses Bluetooth 5.3 and supports AAC, SBC and LC3 codecs. AAC and SBC cover common phone and computer connections; LC3 is associated with newer Bluetooth LE Audio implementations. Codec availability depends on the source device and operating system, so the presence of LC3 on the specification sheet does not mean every phone will use it.
Multipoint lets the earbuds maintain connections with two compatible devices, such as a phone and a laptop. The practical benefit is switching between music on one device and a call or video on another without manually pairing each time, although behavior can vary by operating system and device combination.
Auracast support is also listed. Auracast is a Bluetooth broadcast feature that requires a compatible transmitter and receiving device; it is not the same as ordinary one-to-one pairing and will not create a broadcast stream where none exists.
For setup convenience, Denon lists Google Fast Pair and Windows Swift Pair. Compatible Android and Windows devices can present a quicker pairing prompt, but the exact prompt and menus depend on the software version. The Denon Headphones app provides the EQ and touch-control settings described above.

Controls and the companion app
Touch controls are built into the earbuds. They can handle common playback or call actions, and the app lets you configure the available touch-control behavior. The controls are convenient when they work, but the reported accidental activations matter if the buds move and you instinctively push them back into place.
Before relying on them for calls or commuting, test the gestures with one earbud at a time. Confirm which surface responds, how firmly you must tap and whether a hat, hair or a physical adjustment causes a command. The app’s limited feature set means there is no evidence of an extensive control-remapping system beyond the listed settings.

The AH-C500W carries an IPX4 rating. That supports resistance to sweat and splashes, but it is not a submersion rating and does not authorize exposure to water jets. Wipe the earbuds after exercise and keep them out of showers, pools and heavy rain. The charging case should be kept dry before the earbuds are returned to it.

At home
The open fit can be useful when someone may speak to you or when you want to keep a television, doorbell or appliance audible. The trade-off is that household noise remains in the music, and people in the room may hear leakage.
In an office
Awareness can be an advantage in a shared workspace, but leakage may be inappropriate in a quiet room. If conversations and keyboard noise dominate, the lack of isolation may force you to raise volume. Check your surroundings before using them for confidential audio.
On walks
Open earbuds make it easier to hear traffic and other pedestrians. However, TechRadar’s report of movement during walks means you should verify retention in your own ears. A loose fit can also make channel balance and bass response change as the earbuds shift.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
At a gym
IPX4 covers sweat and splashes, and the lightweight design may feel unobtrusive. It does not make the earbuds waterproof for swimming or showering. Exercises involving sudden head movement are the most demanding test of the open fit.
On public transport or planes
This is the least natural environment for the AH-C500W. Engine and carriage noise remain audible, there is no ANC, and increasing volume can encourage leakage and listening fatigue. A sealed ANC model is the more appropriate category when isolation is the objective.
Alternatives to consider by priority
TechRadar’s July 2025 comparison coverage names Nothing Ear (a), Sony WF-C710N and Denon AH-C840NCW as alternatives. Those names are comparison leads rather than current price recommendations. The AH-C840NCW is described there as a Denon option with ear tips and ANC, which addresses the two largest AH-C500W compromises: lack of sealing and lack of cancellation.
When checking alternatives, compare the feature that caused you to consider the AH-C500W:
- For awareness: verify whether the competing model uses a genuinely open design or relies on an electronic transparency mode.
- For isolation: look for ear tips and ANC, then check whether the fit remains comfortable for your ears.
- For security: prioritize a shape that stays put during head movement; extra codec support does not prevent a slipping earbud.
- For battery: distinguish earbud-only runtime from the case total and check the test volume and codec.
Prices and availability change by country and date, so check the current price for the exact model and your market rather than relying on an older comparison table. Which? displayed an Amazon UK retailer listing when accessed; that does not establish stock or pricing elsewhere.
Buying checklist
- Decide whether open fit is non-negotiable. If you need isolation, stop here and compare sealed ANC earbuds instead.
- Check the return policy. Ear shape determines retention, and no ear-tip sizes are provided to fine-tune the contact.
- Test movement before a long session. Walk, turn your head and speak; note whether either bud shifts or triggers a touch command.
- Test leakage in a quiet room. Play representative music at your normal level and ask whether someone nearby can hear it.
- Confirm your devices’ Bluetooth support. Multipoint, Auracast, LC3, Fast Pair and Swift Pair depend on compatible hardware and software.
- Plan charging. Use the seven-hour earbud figure as the official baseline, keep the case charged and remember that ten minutes is the stated one-hour quick-charge allowance.
- Protect the case from water. IPX4 applies to sweat and splashes, not immersion or water jets.

Should you buy the Denon AH-C500W?
Buy it when your priority is a lightweight, open listening experience that keeps environmental sound available. The combination of passive awareness, wireless charging, multipoint and modern Bluetooth features makes sense for desk work, home listening and relaxed walks where you do not need isolation.
Do not buy it expecting an all-purpose commuting or workout earbud. The lack of ANC, the possibility of leakage and the reported movement during walks are structural trade-offs, not settings that a firmware update or EQ can remove. Check the current price and the seller’s return terms, then judge the fit in motion before treating the AH-C500W as your everyday pair.
