Short answer: Cloudflare Workers is the most direct destination for teams leaving Deno Deploy because Deno has promised migration support for paying customers moving there. It is not the only option. Deno’s deployment guide also documents AWS Lambda, AWS Lightsail, AWS ECS Fargate, Google Cloud Run, DigitalOcean, Kinsta, portable containers, standalone binaries, and self-hosting on a virtual machine or bare-metal server.

The choice depends on whether your application needs edge execution, conventional serverless functions, a portable container, a managed application service, or full infrastructure control. Deno announced on October 9, 2026 that Deploy will continue operating for six months and then shut down, without publishing a precise calendar shutdown date. The Deno runtime will receive monthly bug-fix and security releases for another year before Deno ends its runtime development; the runtime will remain open source.

What Deno’s announcement means for Deploy users

Deno’s October 9, 2026 announcement changes the decision from a routine hosting comparison into a migration-planning exercise. Deno says it is joining Cloudflare and will put future development into the shared platform rather than continue developing a separate runtime and hosting service. Deno Deploy will continue operating for six months before shutting down. The announcement does not define the shutdown as a specific date on the calendar, so treat the six-month period as the planning window rather than converting it into an unverified deadline.

Paying Deno Deploy customers are promised migration support for moving to Cloudflare Workers. That makes Workers the clearest managed migration path, but it does not guarantee that every Deno API, framework adapter, npm package, database integration, or deployment configuration will transfer unchanged. You still need an application-specific compatibility review and a staged cutover.

The runtime timeline is separate from the hosting timeline. Deno says it will publish monthly bug-fix and security releases for the Deno runtime for another year, then end runtime development. Deno also says the runtime will remain open source. A team can therefore continue running Deno outside Deploy, but it will eventually own more of the maintenance, patching, and hosting work.

Deno Deploy Classic had a documented shutdown date of July 20, 2026. That date has already passed, so it should not be treated as a currently available service. The newer October announcement is the relevant statement for the current Deploy service and its future.

How to evaluate a Deno Deploy alternative

Do not rank the services as if they were interchangeable products. They represent different execution and operations models. Evaluate your application against four questions before choosing a destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compatibility: Which Deno runtime APIs, web standards, framework adapters, npm packages, native dependencies, and build scripts does the application use?
  • Execution model: Does the workload suit an edge function, a conventional serverless function, a long-running container, a managed application, or a VM that you operate?
  • Portability: Would you prefer provider-specific deployment code, or a container or binary that can move between hosts?
  • Operational ownership: How much responsibility should your team accept for networking, patching, process supervision, logs, scaling, secrets, and incident response?

The sources available for this decision do not establish a current, independent price, performance, limit, adoption, or feature winner among the providers. A sound choice therefore starts with architecture and compatibility, then verifies the destination’s current commercial terms and limits directly.

Deployment models at a glance

Model Examples documented by Deno Best fit Main trade-off
Managed edge compute Cloudflare Workers Request handling close to users and a supported migration route from Deploy Provider-specific APIs and compatibility work may be required
Serverless functions AWS Lambda Independent functions in an AWS-centered architecture Function-oriented design and provider integration
Serverless containers AWS ECS Fargate, Google Cloud Run Containerized services without managing servers directly Container build, deployment, and service operations remain necessary
Container-based VM hosting AWS Lightsail, DigitalOcean Teams wanting a simpler virtual-machine or container host More host administration than a fully managed function platform
Managed application hosting Kinsta Teams seeking a managed app workflow Verify current Deno compatibility and deployment steps for the specific app
Portable container Any compatible container host Reducing lock-in and moving the same image between environments You still choose and operate a host, orchestrator, or cloud service
Standalone binary or self-hosted runtime deno compile; deno serve on a VM or bare metal Infrastructure control and custom operations Your team owns patching, availability, scaling, security, and process supervision

Cloudflare Workers: the clearest managed migration path

Cloudflare Workers has a special status in this transition. Deno explicitly names it as the destination for migration support for paying Deploy customers, and Deno’s deployment guide lists Workers for edge deployment. That combination makes it the first platform to assess if you want to remain on a managed, globally distributed execution model.

When Workers is a strong fit

  • Your application is primarily request/response code that benefits from edge execution.
  • You want a managed platform rather than a VM or container cluster.
  • You are a paying Deploy customer and want to use the migration assistance Deno has announced.
  • Your team is willing to adapt provider bindings, configuration, and any Deno-specific assumptions that do not map directly.

Compatibility questions to answer first

Inventory every import and runtime feature before changing production traffic. Separate standard web APIs from Deno-specific APIs, platform bindings, file-system access, subprocess use, native modules, background work, and persistent state. Check the framework adapter and build output, then identify integrations that depend on Deploy-managed databases, telemetry, or environment configuration. A small application using portable web APIs may need little code change; a service tied closely to Deploy facilities may require a redesign of those integrations.

A safe Workers migration sequence

  1. Freeze a known-good Deploy build and record its environment variables, domains, routes, scheduled work, data stores, logs, and alerting.
  2. Run a dependency audit. Mark Deno standard-library imports, npm packages, native extensions, file and network permissions, and any Deploy-specific APIs.
  3. Create a Workers project in a non-production account or environment and reproduce only the minimum configuration needed for a test deployment.
  4. Port the request handler and adapt platform bindings one integration at a time. Keep data-access changes isolated so they can be tested independently.
  5. Build a compatibility test suite covering authentication, uploads, streaming, error handling, caching, scheduled tasks, and the largest real payloads your service accepts.
  6. Compare logs, traces, response headers, status codes, latency by region, and failure behavior between the old and new environments.
  7. Send a small percentage of traffic, or use a separate hostname, before changing the primary route. Keep the Deploy deployment intact during this observation period.
  8. Document rollback steps, data consistency implications, and the final DNS or routing change. Only retire the old service after traffic, background work, and operational alerts have been verified.

Deno’s migration commitment reduces transition friction; it does not remove the need to validate application behavior. Treat the support relationship as assistance with the move, not as a promise of automatic source compatibility.

AWS Lambda for function-oriented applications

Deno lists AWS Lambda as a deployment option for serverless functions. Lambda is most natural when your application can be divided into independently invoked handlers and your organization already uses AWS services, identity, networking, logging, or deployment pipelines.

Before selecting it, check whether your current server expects a continuously running process, long-lived connections, local durable files, in-memory state shared across requests, or framework behavior built around a single always-on server. Those assumptions may need to be replaced with external storage, an event-driven design, or a different hosting model. Deno’s guide identifies Lambda as an option but does not provide a current comparison of its price, execution limits, performance, or supported Deno features, so verify those details for your region and runtime before committing.

Serverless containers: AWS ECS Fargate and Google Cloud Run

Deno’s guide lists AWS ECS Fargate and Google Cloud Run for serverless containers. This model lets you package the application and its Deno runtime in a container while the provider handles much of the underlying server capacity. It is useful when a full process or HTTP server is a better fit than a provider-specific function.

AWS ECS Fargate

Fargate suits teams already organized around AWS container services. You define a container image and the service configuration around it, then connect it to the rest of your AWS architecture. The operational burden is lower than managing your own VM fleet, but it is not zero: image builds, task configuration, networking, secrets, logs, health checks, deployment strategy, and capacity behavior still require ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Cloud Run

Cloud Run is the corresponding serverless-container route in Google Cloud. It can be considered when the application already ships as an HTTP container or when portability is more important than using a provider-specific function API. Validate startup behavior, concurrency assumptions, outbound access, background processing, and storage integration in a staging service. Deno’s documentation names Cloud Run as an option but does not establish current pricing or a feature comparison against other hosts.

Why containers can improve portability

Deno describes containers as portable across hosts, orchestrators, and clouds. A container image gives you a repeatable runtime and build artifact, which can ease a later move between a serverless container service, a VM, or a private cluster. Portability is not automatic: provider load balancing, identity, secret stores, databases, observability, and deployment manifests remain platform-specific. Keep those concerns outside the application image where practical, and document the environment contract alongside the image.

AWS Lightsail and DigitalOcean for container or VM hosting

Deno lists AWS Lightsail for container-based VM hosting and DigitalOcean for container hosting. These options occupy a different part of the trade-off space from edge functions and serverless functions. You generally gain a clearer host or container boundary and more control over the running process, while accepting more responsibility for operating it.

Choose this route when the application expects a conventional server, needs a long-lived process, or benefits from a simple container host without adopting a provider-specific function model. Plan for operating-system updates, runtime security releases, TLS, firewall rules, backups, health monitoring, process restarts, capacity planning, and incident recovery. Deno’s guide identifies both providers as deployment choices but does not supply current prices, performance measurements, or limits; obtain those from the provider for your region and selected configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kinsta and other managed application hosting

Deno’s deployment guide lists Kinsta as a managed app-hosting option. Managed hosting can be attractive when your team wants a guided deployment workflow and does not want to assemble every server, process, and monitoring component itself.

Compatibility must be verified for the specific application. Confirm that the service supports the required Deno version, build command, start command, environment variables, networking, background work, and persistence model. Ask how deployments, rollbacks, logs, health checks, and runtime updates work before moving production traffic. The guide’s listing is not a guarantee that every Deno framework or API is supported, and no current feature or price comparison is established here.

Portable containers, standalone binaries, and self-hosting

Portable container deployment

If you want to reduce dependence on a particular provider, package the application as a container and run it on a compatible host. This approach keeps the Deno runtime and application dependencies together and gives you a common artifact for local testing, staging, and production. You still need to select a host and define ingress, TLS, secrets, data stores, scaling, logs, and updates. Portability lowers switching cost; it does not eliminate operations.

Compiling a standalone executable

Deno documents deno compile for producing a standalone binary. A binary can simplify distribution to a VM, bare-metal server, or controlled internal environment because the deployment unit is an executable rather than a source tree and runtime installation. Test the target operating system and architecture, confirm how configuration and assets are supplied, and establish a repeatable rebuild process so security updates can be applied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running Deno yourself

Deno documents running deno serve on a VM or bare-metal host, typically under a process manager such as systemd. Self-hosting gives the most infrastructure control and the least provider coupling. It also makes your team responsible for the complete service lifecycle: host hardening, network exposure, certificates, process supervision, restarts, logs, metrics, backups, capacity, failover, and Deno runtime updates.

Use Deno’s permission model deliberately. Grant only the file, network, environment, and other permissions the application actually needs. Keep the service account unprivileged, restrict inbound access at the network layer, and rehearse recovery from a failed process or host before relying on the deployment for production workloads.

A migration plan that works across providers

  1. Classify the workload. Decide whether it is an edge handler, function, HTTP service, background worker, scheduled task, or stateful application. A mixed system may need more than one destination.
  2. Capture the current contract. Record runtime version, permissions, environment variables, domains, routes, data stores, queues, scheduled jobs, webhooks, authentication, upload limits, and operational alerts.
  3. Inventory code and dependencies. Mark Deno APIs, npm packages, native modules, framework adapters, filesystem access, subprocesses, outbound network calls, and assumptions about local state.
  4. Separate portable code from platform code. Keep business logic and web-standard request handling independent from provider bindings, secret stores, databases, and telemetry adapters.
  5. Choose an artifact. Use provider-native source when the destination’s model is a clear fit; use a container when you need a repeatable process image; use a compiled binary or self-hosted runtime when infrastructure control matters most.
  6. Build a staging deployment. Reproduce production-like data shapes, authentication, domains, secrets, and traffic patterns without exposing the service as the primary production endpoint.
  7. Test behavior, not only startup. Exercise successful requests, malformed input, authentication failures, large payloads, streaming, timeouts, retries, scheduled work, third-party APIs, database transactions, and graceful error responses.
  8. Measure operational behavior. Compare cold-start or startup effects, concurrency, latency by region, memory and CPU use, logs, traces, alert delivery, and recovery after a process or instance failure. Do not assume the old platform’s characteristics transfer.
  9. Plan data and rollback. Define migration order for schemas, queues, object storage, and secrets. Keep the old deployment available long enough to reverse routing without losing writes or duplicating jobs.
  10. Cut over gradually. Use a separate hostname, test users, or incremental traffic where the destination allows it. Watch errors and business metrics, then switch the primary route only after the complete request and background-work path is proven.
  11. Retire deliberately. Remove old credentials and routes only after confirming that no webhook, scheduled task, DNS record, monitoring check, or data export still depends on Deploy.

Common compatibility and operations pitfalls

Assuming “Deno-compatible” means “Deploy-compatible”

A host may run the Deno runtime while differing in permissions, filesystem behavior, networking, process lifetime, deployment packaging, or framework integration. Test the exact version and build output you intend to operate.

Moving code but not configuration

Environment variables, secrets, domains, routes, certificates, database URLs, queues, scheduled jobs, and telemetry are part of the application’s production contract. Recreate them explicitly and verify that the new provider’s secret and identity mechanisms are used instead of copying credentials into images or source control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeping state in the wrong place

Edge and serverless executions may not provide the same process lifetime or local persistence as a long-running server. Treat local memory and disk as ephemeral unless the destination explicitly guarantees otherwise. Put durable state in an appropriate external service and test retries and duplicate delivery.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Ignoring background work

An HTTP request that triggers asynchronous work may behave differently when the platform ends the invocation or scales the instance down. Map scheduled jobs, queues, email delivery, webhooks, and cleanup tasks to an execution model that guarantees the required completion and retry behavior.

Granting excessive permissions

Preserve Deno’s least-privilege approach during migration. Audit file, network, environment, subprocess, and cloud-identity permissions. A broader role can make a migration appear successful while increasing the impact of a compromised dependency or application bug.

Removing the rollback path too early

Keep a tested old deployment, reversible routing, and synchronized data procedures until real traffic and operational alerts have been observed on the replacement. A successful health check alone does not prove that authentication, payments, uploads, scheduled work, and failure recovery are correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Costs, limits, and what is not established

No current independent pricing, performance benchmark, adoption statistic, or feature-by-feature limit comparison is established for these alternatives in the available material. Costs vary with request volume, CPU time, memory, egress, container or VM hours, storage, databases, logs, and support tiers. Obtain a current quote or calculator result for your region and architecture instead of carrying Deno Deploy assumptions into a new platform.

Deno announced a free Deploy plan at general availability on February 3, 2026 with one million requests per month, 100 GB of egress, and 15 CPU hours. Those were launch terms, not verified post-October-announcement terms, so they should not be used as current buying guidance or as a baseline for another provider.

Which alternative should you choose?

Start with Cloudflare Workers if you are a paying Deno Deploy customer and your application is compatible with an edge model; it is the only option in the documented material with an explicit migration-support commitment. Choose AWS Lambda when the workload is naturally a set of AWS-centered functions. Choose AWS ECS Fargate or Google Cloud Run when you want to ship a complete container without managing a VM fleet. Consider AWS Lightsail or DigitalOcean when you want a simpler host boundary and are prepared to operate more of the system. Evaluate Kinsta only after confirming the exact Deno workflow for your app. Use a portable container, standalone binary, or self-hosted Deno when portability or infrastructure control outweighs the convenience of a provider-managed platform.

Whichever route you take, begin before the six-month Deploy window closes: inventory dependencies, build a staging deployment, test real workloads, and keep a rollback path. The runtime’s additional year of bug-fix and security releases provides time to complete a careful move, but it does not extend Deno Deploy’s announced operating period.
