Indiana is building training pathways for data-center work, but available figures do not show whether the state can supply enough qualified workers to meet total demand. The clearest reason is that the jobs being counted are not all alike: a major project may require thousands of construction workers at its peak, then far fewer employees for ongoing operations.

What Indiana’s labor figures do—and don’t—show

Indiana’s broad labor market provides context, not a count of data-center workers. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development reported a 3.3% unemployment rate, 63.0% labor-force participation and a labor force of 3,488,019 in August 2026. It also reported 102,895 statewide job postings as of August 30, 2026. Those figures cover the wider economy and cannot establish how many people are qualified or available for data-center jobs. Indiana DWD’s August 2026 employment report was posted September 18, 2026.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) reports 15% annual job growth, a $90,000 median salary and 200 monthly job postings for its broad AI-and-data workforce category. The page excerpt does not specify the underlying data vintage, and these are not data-center-specific hiring figures. They should not be read as a measure of demand for electricians, HVAC workers, network technicians or facility operators. IEDC’s Talent / Workforce page says AI-and-data employment is concentrated most heavily in Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

Construction demand is different from permanent staffing

The IEDC’s February 11, 2026 announcement for Meta’s multi-phase, 1,500-acre Lebanon campus estimates approximately 300 high-wage operational jobs when complete and more than 4,000 construction jobs at peak. These are announced project estimates, not a count of completed hires. The construction figure describes peak activity, not a permanent workforce of that size. IEDC’s Meta Lebanon announcement provides the estimates.

That distinction matters when judging whether Indiana can keep pace. Construction work is tied to building phases and may draw on trades and contractors; operations roles continue after a facility opens and call for a different mix of technical and facilities skills. Adding peak construction jobs to permanent operating positions would make demand look more continuous than it is.

What regional data-center job estimates count

Northwest Indiana studies illustrate why employment totals need definitions and geographic limits. A July 2026 Northwest Indiana Forum summary of an academic model by Justin Ross of Indiana University Bloomington and Saurav Roychoudhury of Capital University examines a hypothetical one-gigawatt campus in a seven-county region. It estimates 14,651 construction job-years and 2,090 ongoing regional jobs, but those totals are not the same as the campus’s direct payroll.

Measure in the modeled scenario What it represents
300 permanent on-site W-2 employees Employees located at the facility in the model.
Approximately 926 direct jobs Direct employment under federal modeling conventions, a broader measure than on-site W-2 headcount.
2,090 total regional jobs Employment after modeled supply-chain effects, not 2,090 campus employees.
14,651 construction job-years Construction employment expressed as job-years in the modeled project scenario, not a permanent headcount.

The Northwest Indiana Forum’s September 2026 summary of the authors’ ancillary-impact analysis estimates approximately 1,815 operations-and-maintenance jobs for its modeled scenario. That is a regional impact estimate, not a statewide hiring total; the analysis also includes employment and output in energy infrastructure and other indirect layers. Neither Northwest Indiana model can be combined with the Lebanon project estimate or statewide labor indicators to produce a statewide worker-supply forecast. See the Forum’s July 13, 2026 summary and September 14, 2026 summary.

Indiana is establishing training pathways

Ivy Tech Community College and Microsoft announced a Data Center Academy memorandum of understanding on June 17, 2026. The announcement describes possible curriculum alignment, workforce training, internships, experiential learning, industry engagement and career exploration. It establishes a partnership, not proof that every element is operating at scale or has already filled jobs. Ivy Tech says it serves more than 200,000 students annually across more than 70 programs; that is the college’s overall reach, not enrollment in data-center training. Ivy Tech’s announcement includes the partnership details.

Ivy Tech’s Lake County career-pathways page lists credentials that map to several kinds of work:

  • Supply-chain management: a pathway for logistics and related support work.
  • Data-center technician: work installing, maintaining, monitoring and troubleshooting hardware and network infrastructure.
  • Data-center engineering operations: work involving electronic and mechanical equipment and systems, including HVAC.

These pathways show that preparation need not mean earning a software or AI degree. They do not, by themselves, establish how many workers are enrolled, complete credentials, enter relevant jobs or remain in Indiana. Ivy Tech’s Lake County Data Center Career Pathways page describes the credentials and roles.

What would demonstrate that workforce growth is keeping pace?

A credible statewide comparison would need to measure demand and worker supply on compatible terms. It would distinguish temporary construction demand from continuing operations, direct facility staffing from contractor and regional jobs, and statewide trends from project- or region-specific estimates. It would also track the occupations and skills involved: construction trades, electrical and mechanical systems, HVAC, supply chain, hardware and networking, and operations.

It would then compare those needs with a pipeline measured through relevant enrollment, credential completion, hiring and retention—not general college enrollment or broad AI-and-data employment alone. Indiana DWD provides labor-market data resources through its Data page. TechIndiana’s 2026 survey reports 121,600 net tech workers and says tech represents 3.85% of Indiana’s workforce, with data current as of May 2026. Those are broad technology-sector measures, not data-center labor counts. TechIndiana’s workforce survey supplies that context.

The evidence establishes project demand estimates, statewide labor conditions and emerging education partnerships, but does not provide a common statewide forecast of data-center labor demand matched against the number of qualified workers available and entering the field. It therefore cannot support a definitive claim that Indiana faces either a data-center labor shortage or a surplus.
