The Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card has a $350 annual fee and can make sense for Delta flyers who will use its Companion Certificate and other qualifying benefits. The certificate is not an unrestricted free ticket: it arrives after renewal starting in the second membership year, has route and fare limits, and still requires payment of taxes and fees. Whether the card is worthwhile depends on the trips and credits you can actually use.
What does the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Amex cost?
American Express lists a $350 annual fee for the U.S. card, according to its product page accessed in 2026. The fee is the starting point for evaluating the card; the issuer’s listed benefit amounts are not guaranteed savings for every cardmember.
How does the Companion Certificate work?
The basic cardmember receives one Companion Certificate after each account renewal, beginning in the second membership year, according to American Express’s card page and its Companion Certificate FAQ. It is intended for eligible Delta Main round-trip travel within the U.S. and to Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America. It may also apply to the eligible flight portion of some Delta Vacations packages.

The certificate is subject to fare, route, availability, and other restrictions, and Delta Basic experiences are excluded. Taxes and fees are still due: American Express lists $22–$250 for itineraries of up to four flight segments in its benefits guide. Check the certificate’s live terms and eligible itinerary before planning around it.

Which checked bags are covered?
First checked bag
American Express advertises a free first checked bag on eligible Delta flights. Eligibility depends on the benefit’s terms, so do not assume it applies to every ticket, carrier, or itinerary.
Second checked bag
The basic Platinum cardmember can receive a free second bag on eligible domestic Delta flights. The waiver is subject to itinerary geography, carrier, check-in, and existing baggage-allowance rules. It is not a general second-bag benefit for every international trip. Review the current American Express baggage-benefit terms for the specific trip.

Does the card cover TSA PreCheck?
The card offers one statement credit every four years for a qualifying application fee: up to $85 for TSA PreCheck or up to $120 for Global Entry. Only one program’s fee credit applies in that period; the first qualifying application fee charged to the card determines which credit is received. These are reimbursements for eligible application fees, not approval guarantees. Global Entry approval includes TSA PreCheck access at no added cost. See the card benefit guide and screening-credit terms.

American Express also lists a $2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars Headstart per Medallion Qualification Year, TakeOff 15 on eligible Delta award bookings made through Delta channels, a $120 Resy credit, a $120 rideshare credit, a $150 Delta Stays credit, Zone 5 boarding, and 20% back on eligible in-flight food and beverage purchases. How to decide whether the $350 fee is worth it
Estimate the value of benefits you expect to use, rather than adding every advertised credit at face value. A practical calculation is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Estimate what a companion’s eligible round-trip fare would cost on a trip you are likely to take, then account for the certificate’s fare restrictions and taxes and fees.
- Count checked-bag savings only for Delta trips and bags that meet the applicable eligibility rules.
- Include the TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit only in the four-year period when you can use it, and count one program rather than both.
- Include other statement credits only to the extent you would naturally use them under their terms.
- Compare the resulting realistic value with the $350 fee and with the rewards or benefits you would give up by using this card instead of another payment option.
The card is most compelling when its certificate fits a trip you would take anyway and its eligible Delta benefits match your travel habits. If those benefits are difficult to use, their advertised amounts alone do not establish that the fee pays for itself.
