Short answer: the De’Longhi Rivelia EXAM440.55 is most compelling for households that want automatic espresso and milk drinks while regularly switching between bean varieties. Its interchangeable-hopper design, saved profiles and automatic LatteCrema Hot system address convenience better than a conventional single-hopper machine. The buying decision is less straightforward if you primarily want iced drinks, because LatteCrema Cool is an optional upgrade, or if you need proven long-term reliability: the available evidence does not establish lifespan, repair rates or consistency over time.
What the Rivelia EXAM440.55 is
The Rivelia EXAM440.55 is De’Longhi’s fully automatic bean-to-cup espresso machine with fresh grinding, automated brewing and automatic milk frothing. Regional listings use slightly different identifiers: the European product page names the white model EXAM440.55.W, while the US page uses EXAM44055W. Color suffixes, bundle contents, published drink counts, price and availability can differ, so confirm the complete SKU sold in your country before ordering.
This review evaluates the manufacturer’s published configuration and the limited independent evidence available. It is not a hands-on test of the machine. De’Longhi’s specifications and feature descriptions should therefore be read as manufacturer claims, while the performance observations below are attributed to TechRadar’s earlier review summary.

On the European listing, De’Longhi says the EXAM440.55.W includes two interchangeable 250 g hoppers. That makes the machine unusually practical for a household that alternates between regular coffee and decaf, or between two roast styles, without emptying a permanently installed hopper by hand.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How switching actually works
The hoppers are interchangeable, but the grinder is not instantly free of the previous beans. De’Longhi’s switch mode clears coffee left in the grinder by preparing a final drink or grinding the remainder away. The first cup after a change can therefore contain some residual beans from the previous hopper. Treat the feature as a controlled purge, not a contamination-free instant swap.
- Choose the replacement hopper. Fit the hopper containing the beans you want to use next, following the machine’s seating and locking instructions.
- Run the switch/clear process. Allow the machine to empty beans remaining in the grinder by making the prompted drink or grinding them out.
- Discard or use the clearing output. Do not expect the first output to represent only the new beans.
- Check the selected bean setting. If you changed roast, origin or decaf type, review the grinder and Bean Adapt guidance before making the drink you intend to serve.
This workflow is valuable, but it adds a short clearing step and some bean waste. Someone who changes beans only once every few months may gain little from the second hopper; someone who switches daily is the target user.
Who benefits most from the hopper design?
The practical advantage is strongest when two people want different beans throughout the week. A regular coffee drinker can keep a preferred blend loaded while a decaf drinker uses the second hopper, rather than measuring beans into a shared container for every cup. It also suits households that alternate a darker espresso roast with a milder morning blend. The feature is less persuasive if everyone drinks the same beans or if you normally use pre-ground coffee; in those cases, the extra hopper and its switching routine may add complexity without changing your routine.

Remember that the European claim is specifically for two 250 g hoppers. The US specification lists 8.82 oz per hopper, approximately the same capacity, but you should verify that your local box contains two hoppers rather than assuming the European package applies everywhere.
Drink menu and milk systems
Hot drinks
The European product page lists 16 one-touch drinks. The US listing instead says 18+ presets. These figures should not be merged into a single universal menu count: they are regional claims that may reflect different recipes, software or bundles.
LatteCrema Hot automatically froths milk for milk-based drinks. De’Longhi says the system has a one-touch cleaning function after use, and the US listing says it can froth dairy milk or plant-based alternatives. Automatic frothing reduces manual steaming work, but it does not remove the need to rinse and maintain the milk container as instructed for your regional model.
Cold milk drinks
The LatteCrema Cool set is an optional upgrade, not a standard component described as included with every EXAM440.55 bundle. De’Longhi says the accessory enables six cold milk-based drinks. Verify compatibility, included parts and the exact bundle with the retailer because regional packages can differ.

What the menu count does and does not tell you
A larger preset number does not necessarily mean a wider range of brewing methods. Regional software may count size variations or recipes differently, and the published figures do not reveal how much control you have over dose, volume, temperature or milk quantity. Compare the actual on-screen recipes in your market, especially if you need a particular drink, rather than choosing on “16” versus “18+” alone.
Personalization and controls
Both regional listings describe a 3.5-inch color touch display and up to four user profiles. Profiles are useful when several people want different drink sizes, strengths or milk preferences without re-entering settings each time.
The US specification lists a burr grinder with 13 settings and De’Longhi’s Bean Adapt feature. Bean Adapt guides the user through settings for the selected beans. It is an assisted starting point, not a guarantee of a preferred taste and not a substitute for adjusting grind, dose or drink volume to suit your beans and water.
Four profiles are a practical ceiling rather than a promise that every setting is stored in unlimited detail. Check the menu during setup to see which recipe adjustments are saved and which machine-wide settings remain shared. If more than four people use the machine, one profile may need to serve multiple users.
Published specifications
The following figures come from De’Longhi’s US listing and are manufacturer specifications rather than independent measurements. Confirm that your local SKU uses the same configuration.
| Specification | Published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Product type | Fully automatic espresso machine | US manufacturer listing |
| Dimensions | 17 × 9.75 × 14.75 inches | US manufacturer listing; measure your counter and overhead clearance |
| Product weight | 21.39 lb | US manufacturer listing |
| Water tank | 47.34 oz | US manufacturer listing; usable volume can vary with rinsing and drink size |
| Bean capacity | 8.82 oz per listed hopper | US listing; approximately equivalent to the 250 g hopper capacity cited on the European page |
| Grinder | 13 settings | US manufacturer listing |
| Pump pressure | 19 bar | US manufacturer specification, not an independently measured extraction pressure |
| Saved profiles | Up to four | Listed by both regional pages |
| Display | 3.5-inch color touch display | Listed by both regional pages |
| Drink count | 16 one-touch drinks or 18+ presets | European and US pages differ |
The 19-bar figure is a pump specification, not a guarantee of 19 bar at the coffee puck or of better flavor than a machine with a different headline number. Likewise, the 47.34-ounce tank is a nominal capacity; automatic rinses and milk drinks consume water, so the interval between refills depends on how many people use the machine and which recipes they choose.
What daily use involves
First setup
- Check the installation space. The US dimensions are 17 inches high, 9.75 inches wide and 14.75 inches deep. Leave enough room to open the hopper, remove the water tank and perform cleaning.
- Confirm the regional manual. Electrical requirements, filter instructions, descaling intervals and menu labels are market-specific.
- Fill the water tank and install the chosen hopper. If your package includes two hoppers, label them so regular and decaf beans are not confused.
- Complete the on-screen setup and rinse cycle. Follow the prompts for water hardness, language and any included filter.
- Use Bean Adapt as a starting point. Select the bean characteristics requested by the display, then adjust the result after tasting.
- Create profiles. Save each household member’s preferred recipes rather than repeatedly changing a shared default.
Changing beans during the week
Plan the switch when you can spare a clearing drink or grinder cycle. If you need a completely uncontaminated decaf shot for medical or dietary reasons, the built-in purge should not be treated as a laboratory-grade separation method; residual coffee can remain in the grinder until the clearing process has run.

Making milk drinks
Attach the LatteCrema Hot container, choose a saved or one-touch recipe, and let the machine froth automatically. Use the one-touch cleaning command after the session and follow the manual’s instructions for removing, rinsing and refrigerating milk components. The convenience is in automating the foam, not in eliminating sanitation work.
Plant-based milk compatibility is a manufacturer claim on the US page, not a guarantee that every oat, soy or almond formula will produce identical foam. If a household uses several alternatives, treat the first few drinks as a setup period and keep the milk system clean between changes.
Cleaning and maintenance expectations
De’Longhi specifically describes one-touch cleaning for the LatteCrema Hot system. That addresses the immediate milk-system rinse, but the available specifications do not provide a complete maintenance schedule for every component. Expect to manage water refilling, spent grounds, drip-tray emptying, periodic descaling and any water-filter replacement required by your regional manual.
- Run the milk-system cleaning cycle whenever the machine prompts or after using the milk container.
- Rinse milk-contact parts as directed; do not leave milk in the container between uses unless your manual explicitly permits the storage method.
- Empty the drip tray and grounds container before they reach their capacity sensors.
- Use only the filter and descaler parts specified for your exact regional model.
- Keep a record of descaling and filter changes, especially in hard-water areas.
No evidence supplied for this review establishes how much cleaning time accumulates over months, how often failures occur or how long the milk system lasts. Those are ownership questions that require longer-term testing.
The real cost of ownership
The purchase price is only one part of the budget. A bundle with LatteCrema Cool costs more than the base machine if you want cold milk drinks, and beans, filters, descaler and replacement milk-system parts are recurring expenses. Exact prices and included accessories vary by country and retailer, so compare the delivered bundle rather than a headline machine price. Confirm whether a water filter is in the box, which care products the local manual specifies and whether warranty service is available nearby.
What independent review evidence says
TechRadar’s article dated 14 July 2026 recaps its earlier 2024 Rivelia review. It reports that tester Josephine Watson awarded the original Rivelia five stars and highlights consistently well-extracted espresso, the Bean Adapt feature and thick, creamy LatteCrema Hot foam.
That article is a later summary, not a new controlled test of the EXAM440.55 configuration. It supports a positive account of espresso and foam in that review context, but it does not establish comparative superiority, reliability, noise level, drink-temperature consistency, repeatability across beans or long-term maintenance burden.

Is the Rivelia EXAM440.55 worth it?
It makes the strongest case for
- Two-bean households: the interchangeable hoppers make regular/decaf rotation more convenient than emptying a single hopper.
- Families or shared kitchens: four profiles and a color touch display reduce repeated setup.
- Milk-drink users: LatteCrema Hot automates frothing and provides a one-touch cleaning command.
- People who prefer guided adjustment: Bean Adapt and 13 grinder settings offer more control than a fixed pre-ground workflow.
- Users who want a compact automatic format: the published US footprint is under 10 inches wide, subject to clearance requirements.
It is a weaker fit for
- Dedicated cold-brew drinkers: the machine’s cold recipes should not be assumed to use cold-brew extraction, and LatteCrema Cool costs extra unless included in your bundle.
- Users who never change beans: the second hopper’s main advantage may go unused.
- People seeking zero maintenance: automatic milk foam still requires cleaning, and the machine still needs water, grounds and descaling care.
- Buyers demanding proven durability: the available evidence does not cover repair rates, lifespan or long-term reliability.
- Those with limited overhead space: the 17-inch published height may be awkward beneath low cabinets.
How to compare it with other automatic machines
A meaningful comparison should use the same criteria rather than relying on pump-pressure numbers or menu counts alone.

- Match the model code and color suffix. Check whether the listing says EXAM440.55.W, EXAM44055W or another regional variant.
- Confirm hopper contents. The European listing specifies two 250 g interchangeable hoppers; do not assume every market bundle includes both.
- Verify the drink menu for your region. Published counts range from 16 one-touch drinks to 18+ presets.
- Check whether LatteCrema Cool is included. It is described as an upgrade that enables six cold milk-based drinks, not as a universal inclusion.
- Measure the installation area. Use the published US dimensions as a starting point and allow working clearance above and around the machine.
- Read the local warranty and manual. Confirm electrical requirements, filters, descaler instructions and service coverage.
- Recheck stock and price immediately before purchase. These commercial details change by country and date; the European white model was shown out of stock when checked, while the US listing displayed a price.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Rivelia switch between regular and decaf beans?
Yes, that is the machine’s defining use case. The European listing describes two interchangeable 250 g hoppers and a switch mode that clears beans remaining in the grinder. It is convenient, but it is not an instantaneous, residue-free changeover.
Is the LatteCrema Cool set included?
Not necessarily. De’Longhi describes LatteCrema Cool as an optional upgrade that enables six cold milk-based drinks. Check the exact regional bundle and retailer listing before assuming it is in the box.
Recommended Free Tools
Does it make iced coffee or cold brew?
Regional pages list cold coffee recipes, but the available product information does not establish a slow-steeped cold-brew method. Confirm the recipe method and accessory requirements if cold coffee is your main reason for buying.
How many drinks can it make?
The European page claims 16 one-touch drinks, while the US page claims 18+ presets. Use the count for your local page because regional menus and software can differ.
How many people can save preferences?
Both regional listings specify up to four profiles. The exact settings stored in each profile should be confirmed in the local menu and manual.
Does it froth plant-based milk?
The US listing says LatteCrema Hot can froth milk or plant-based alternatives. Results may vary by formulation, and all milk-contact parts still require cleaning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs 19-bar pressure evidence of better espresso?
No. It is a manufacturer pump specification, not an independent extraction measurement or a guarantee of flavor. Taste depends on beans, grind, dose, water and recipe settings.

Is the machine easy to maintain?
It has a one-touch LatteCrema Hot cleaning function, but automatic frothing does not eliminate rinsing, drip-tray and grounds-container emptying, descaling or filter care. The long-term time burden has not been established.
What should I verify before ordering?
Match the full model code and color, confirm both hoppers, check whether Cool is included, measure the 17-inch published height and review local warranty, electrical, filter and descaler instructions.
Bottom line
The De’Longhi Rivelia EXAM440.55 earns consideration when bean flexibility is the reason you are buying an automatic machine. Two interchangeable hoppers, four profiles, a touch display and automatic hot milk foam form a coherent convenience package, and TechRadar’s earlier review reported strong espresso and foam. The compromises are equally clear: switching beans still requires a purge, cold milk drinks require the optional LatteCrema Cool set unless bundled, regional menus and specifications differ, and there is no evidence here to certify long-term reliability. Buy it for the workflow it simplifies, not for an unverified promise of maintenance-free ownership or cold-brew capability.
