The De’Longhi Magnifica Start ECAM220.31.SB is an automatic bean-to-cup coffee machine with an integrated grinder, soft-touch controls and a traditional manual milk frother. It prepares four named coffee recipes—Coffee, Doppio+, Espresso and Long—and treats steam as a separate one-touch selection. It can also brew from pre-ground coffee and dispense hot water through the frother. The important buying compromise is straightforward: coffee preparation is largely automated, but milk texturing remains a hands-on task.
This review explains the machine’s documented capabilities, space and electrical requirements, first-use procedure, adjustments, cleaning routine and troubleshooting. De’Longhi’s product page and instruction manual provide specifications and operating guidance, not independent measurements of taste, speed, noise, reliability or value.
What the ECAM220.31.SB is
Magnifica Start is De’Longhi’s name for this model family; the exact silver-finish model covered here is ECAM220.31.SB. It is a super-automatic, bean-to-cup machine: beans go into an onboard hopper, the integrated grinder prepares a dose, and the machine brews into the cup. Soft-touch controls provide the drink selections. The machine also accepts pre-ground coffee, which is useful when you want to use decaffeinated coffee or a different coffee without emptying the hopper.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The milk system is not an automatic carafe. A traditional manual frother uses steam that you direct into a separate milk jug. You control the position of the steam wand, the amount of air introduced and the final temperature. That design keeps milk preparation flexible, but it means a milk drink always includes a manual step and a wipe-and-purge routine.

De’Longhi’s listing describes aroma and temperature personalization. The manual included with ECAM22031SB also covers grinder adjustment, water-hardness programming, filter use, cleaning and descaling. Those documents are the basis for the operating advice below.
Drinks and what each selection does
The product listing names four coffee recipes. In a separate description, De’Longhi says there are five one-touch selections when steam is counted. To avoid conflating those statements, the table separates coffee recipes from the steam function.
| Selection | What is documented | Milk requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee | A named coffee recipe selected from the control panel. | No milk required; add manually frothed milk if desired. |
| Doppio+ | A named coffee recipe intended as a larger or stronger-style coffee selection. | No milk required; milk is prepared separately with the frother. |
| Espresso | A named espresso recipe. | No milk required; milk is optional and must be frothed manually. |
| Long | A named longer coffee recipe. | No milk required; milk is optional and must be frothed manually. |
| Steam | A separate one-touch steam selection, not a fifth named coffee recipe. | Used to texture milk manually or for steam-related preparation. |
The listing also says hot water can be provided through the frother. Because the model does not have an automatic milk carafe, recipes such as a cappuccino-style or latte-style drink are assembled by brewing coffee, steaming milk yourself and combining the two. The machine does not promise a preset, push-button milk recipe in the supplied materials.

Specifications, capacity and counter space
The following figures are De’Longhi’s published specifications for the model listing accessed in 2026. They are not independent measurements.
| Specification | Published figure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Water tank | 1.8 L | Manufacturer-listed capacity; actual refill timing depends on drink volume, rinsing and steaming. |
| Bean container | 250 g | Manufacturer-listed hopper capacity; beans vary in density, so a gram figure is not a guaranteed number of doses. |
| Dimensions | 240 × 440 × 350 mm | Use the listed measurements when checking a counter; confirm how a local seller labels width, depth and height. |
| Maximum cup height | 140 mm | Cups taller than this may not fit beneath the dispensing area. |
| Pump pressure | 15 bar | A manufacturer specification, not a measured extraction result or taste guarantee. |
| Power | 1450 W | Manufacturer-listed rating. |
| Electrical configuration | 220–240 V | Check that the regional voltage and plug match your installation; do not assume compatibility in every country. |
| Weight | 8.99 kg on the product listing | The accompanying manual gives 8.8 kg and notes that weight varies by model. Confirm the exact regional unit before using weight in a comparison. |
| Included warranty | Two years on the accessed regional store page | Warranty coverage and duration are market-specific; verify the terms with the seller in your country. |
The 440 mm dimension is significant when planning a countertop because the machine occupies not only width but also front-to-back depth. Leave enough room to open the water tank, remove the infuser and empty the drip tray without having to move the appliance. The manufacturer does not publish a universal clearance number in the supplied material, so measure the location and check the opening direction of your cabinets.

Beans, pre-ground coffee and user adjustments
Using whole beans
Fill the bean container with whole coffee beans suitable for espresso machines. The integrated grinder doses beans for the selected recipe. Keep the hopper lid closed when possible so beans are not unnecessarily exposed to air. The manual’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends coffee intended for espresso machines and notes that an opened pack can lose taste when it has been open too long.
Using pre-ground coffee
The ECAM220.31.SB can brew with pre-ground coffee. This is practical for decaf, a guest’s preferred coffee or a small amount of a different blend. Follow the manual’s dosing instruction for the pre-ground compartment and add grounds only when the machine is ready for that mode; putting grounds into the bean hopper is not an equivalent substitution.
Aroma and temperature
De’Longhi’s product information says aroma and temperature can be personalized. The available settings let you adapt the drink to your coffee and cup rather than locking every recipe to one fixed profile. The exact button sequence and available levels are shown in the model-specific support material and manual; use those labels on your unit because control-panel symbols can vary by regional version.
Grinder adjustment
The grinder setting changes the fineness of the coffee grounds. The manual warns that a change may take at least two coffees to show its effect, so do not turn the dial repeatedly after a single cup. Make a small adjustment, brew two coffees and then assess the flow. The manufacturer associates slow delivery with coffee ground too finely and weak or insufficiently creamy coffee with coffee ground too coarsely or with unsuitable coffee. These are troubleshooting possibilities, not controlled predictions of every user’s result.
First setup: a careful sequence
Set the machine up near a grounded outlet that matches its regional 220–240 V specification, with room to remove the tank and service the front components. Then follow the supplied manual rather than relying on a generic bean-to-cup procedure.

- Unpack and inspect. Confirm that the model marking is ECAM220.31.SB and check the regional voltage, plug and included parts.
- Rinse and fill the water tank. Use fresh water and keep the tank seated correctly. If you use a water-softener filter, install it according to the manual and verify that the filter is the correct regional part.
- Switch on and complete the initial rinse or heating instructions. The machine may dispense water during startup; place a suitable container under the outlets and the frother as directed.
- Set local water hardness. The manual explains how to test or select hardness and enter the result. This setting lets the machine tailor descaling prompts to your water supply.
- Choose your coffee input. Add espresso-suitable beans to the hopper, or use the pre-ground compartment when the machine calls for it.
- Make the first drinks. De’Longhi says that four to five coffees may be needed before the machine begins giving satisfactory results. Treat these as conditioning and adjustment drinks rather than judging the final profile from the first cup.
- Set aroma, temperature and grinder position. Make one change at a time. After a grinder change, brew at least two coffees before deciding whether the flow improved.
Daily operation and manual milk workflow
Black coffee
Place a cup no taller than the published 140 mm maximum beneath the spouts, select Coffee, Doppio+, Espresso or Long, and choose your saved or preferred aroma and temperature settings. If the cup is unusually tall, measure it rather than assuming it will clear the dispensing area.
Milk drinks
Prepare the coffee first, then use the steam selection and frother. Pour cold milk into a suitable jug, purge the wand briefly as instructed, position the steam tip near the milk surface to introduce air, then lower it to circulate and heat the milk. Stop before the milk overheats, tap and swirl the jug to even the texture, and pour it into the coffee. The exact technique is manual, so results depend on wand position, milk quantity and practice; the official materials do not claim a fixed foam quality or preparation time.
Immediately after steaming, wipe the wand and run the recommended purge. Dried milk is harder to remove and can obstruct the steam outlet. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific milk-preparation guidance for the control sequence and cleaning details.
Hot water
The frother can provide hot water as well as steam. Use a heat-resistant cup, select the hot-water function described in the manual and keep hands clear of the outlet. Because the outlet is associated with the frother, wipe and purge it after milk use before drawing water for a clean-tasting drink.
Cleaning and maintenance you must plan for
This machine’s ownership routine includes removable-part cleaning, infuser care, filter management and descaling. The exact alerts and button sequences are model-specific; the manual supplied for ECAM22031SB should be the authority for each cycle.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
After milk steaming
- Wipe the exterior of the steam wand immediately.
- Purge the wand for the period specified by the manual.
- Check the steam tip for dried milk and clear it only as instructed.
Drip tray and coffee residues
Empty and clean the drip tray and grounds container when the machine indicates or when they are visibly full. Rinsing these parts prevents overflow and stale residue. Refit every component fully; a tray that is not seated can trigger an apparent machine fault.
Removable infuser
The manual provides instructions for removing, rinsing and reinstalling the infuser. Handle it gently, allow it to dry as directed and never force it past the service position. Correct infuser placement matters because the brewing group is a moving assembly.
Water-softener filter
The documentation describes a water-softener filter and a filter-replacement indicator. Fit only a compatible filter, activate it as instructed and replace it when the indicator or manual schedule calls for replacement. The exact replacement-filter SKU was not established for every region, so verify the part number in current model support materials before ordering.
Descaling
Water hardness determines how often descaling is needed. When the descale alert appears, run the complete cycle with a coffee-machine descaler that the label identifies as compatible. Follow the manual’s dilution, dispensing, rinsing and completion steps; interrupting the cycle can leave solution in the water path or cause the alert to remain active. Do not substitute household acids unless the manufacturer explicitly permits them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting documented by De’Longhi
| Symptom | Manufacturer-listed possibilities | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee is weak or not sufficiently creamy | Ground too coarsely or unsuitable coffee. | Use coffee intended for espresso machines, make a small grinder adjustment and brew at least two coffees before judging the change. |
| Coffee comes out slowly | Ground too finely. | Adjust the grinder slightly coarser and allow two coffees for the change to appear. |
| Taste has declined after opening a pack | An opened coffee pack may lose taste when left open too long. | Store beans or grounds as directed by the coffee producer and avoid leaving a pack open unnecessarily. |
| Descale reminders seem mistimed | Water hardness may not be set correctly. | Check the hardness setting and reprogram it using the manual’s procedure; the machine uses that information to adjust prompts. |
These associations come from the manufacturer’s troubleshooting table. They are not laboratory findings about every coffee, water supply or grinder setting. If cleaning, correct assembly and the documented adjustments do not resolve a fault, use De’Longhi’s regional support service rather than disassembling the machine beyond the instructions.

What this review can and cannot conclude
The official listing and manual establish the model identity, drink selections, input options, capacities, dimensions, electrical rating, adjustment features and maintenance procedures. They do not establish extraction temperature measured at the cup, brewing speed, operating noise, long-term reliability, milk texture consistency, energy use in a household, customer-satisfaction averages or value against competing machines. No independent test, consumer survey or comparative tasting result is available in the supplied evidence.
The 15-bar pump figure should therefore be read as a specification, not as proof that every espresso will taste better than coffee from a machine with another rated pressure. Likewise, the 1.8 L tank and 250 g hopper describe storage capacity, not a guaranteed number of drinks, because rinsing, recipe size, grinder dose and steaming all change consumption.

Buying and availability checks
Before ordering, confirm the exact ECAM220.31.SB suffix, silver finish, regional voltage, included accessories and warranty terms. The accessed regional product page showed the machine as out of stock on 13 October 2026, but stock status can change and does not establish availability elsewhere. Compare any local offer on the same model and date; a different Magnifica variant may have different controls, milk hardware, dimensions or included parts.
Also check the service network and the price of compatible descaler and water filters in your market. The machine’s documented maintenance is manageable, but it is not maintenance-free: milk-wand cleaning follows every steaming session, removable parts need regular washing, and hardness-based filter or descaling actions must be completed when indicated.
