What the Magnifica S ECAM22.110.SB is
DeLonghi classifies ECAM22.110.SB as a Magnifica S automatic coffee maker. The machine handles bean grinding, dosing and espresso extraction from front-panel controls. Its named coffee drinks are espresso and espresso lungo; hot water and steam are additional functions, not extra one-touch milk recipes. Drinks and controls
Automatic espresso and espresso lungo
Pressing the relevant drink button starts an automatic grind-and-brew cycle. Espresso uses a shorter extraction; espresso lungo uses more water for a longer cup. The exact volume depends on the programmed quantity setting, so the machine should be understood as offering adjustable versions of these two core drinks rather than a broad café menu.
Twin-shot operation
The twin-shot function is intended for two espresso servings at once. Cup clearance and the selected quantity still matter: tall vessels may not fit comfortably under the outlet, and a larger programmed volume is not the same thing as a traditional double espresso recipe.
Manual milk drinks and hot water
Steam from the frother can be used for a cappuccino or latte-style drink, but the milk must be textured separately and then combined with the brewed coffee. The hot-water function is suitable for tea or infusions. Because the controls are not documented as one-touch cappuccino or latte buttons, recipes requiring milk remain a hands-on process.
Pre-ground coffee
A bypass for pre-ground coffee is provided. This is useful for decaffeinated grounds or when a second bean type is needed without emptying the hopper. The dose still has to be added according to the model’s instructions; adding extra grounds or filling the bypass repeatedly can cause blockages.
How the daily workflow works
- Fill the tank and hopper. Add fresh water to the removable 1.8 L reservoir and beans to the grinder hopper. Keep the grounds container and drip tray correctly seated.
- Select aroma. Use the strength control to choose the machine’s available aroma setting before starting the drink. This changes the dose within the machine’s programmed range; it does not alter the roast or bean freshness.
- Choose espresso or espresso lungo. Place a cup under the outlet and press the corresponding button. For two portions, select the twin-shot function where indicated by the control panel.
- Adjust quantity if needed. Programmed volume can be customized so a preferred cup size can be repeated without manually stopping every cycle.
- Steam milk separately. For a milk beverage, brew the coffee first or after steaming, purge and engage the steam function, then texture cold milk in a suitable pitcher. Wipe and rinse the frother immediately after use.
- Empty waste containers as signalled. Spent grounds collect in the grounds container and rinse water in the drip tray. Delaying either can stop the machine or produce warning lights.
This sequence explains the central ownership trade-off: the coffee base is highly automated, while milk preparation is not. A user who drinks black coffee or espresso lungo will use most of the machine’s automation; a daily cappuccino drinker will spend additional time at the steam wand.

The manufacturer figures are specifications published for the model, not independent measurements of cup quality or speed. The dimension entries should not be treated as a contradiction: DeLonghi presents three numbers without orientation labels, while CHOICE labels its order as H × W × D and rounds the weight. Before buying, measure the available counter depth, width and overhead clearance using the dimensions supplied for the local version.
Counter space, capacity and electrical requirements
Although DeLonghi calls the Magnifica S compact, “compact” is not a standard footprint measurement. The published 230 × 430 × 340 mm figures occupy a meaningful amount of counter depth once room for the water tank, bean hopper and service access is included. Because the product page leaves orientation unlabeled, check the manual or regional specification sheet for how the machine must be positioned and where the tank is removed.
The 1.8 L reservoir is useful for several drinks, but actual yield varies with cup volume, rinsing cycles and steam use. The 14-serving grounds capacity is a manufacturer allowance, not a promise of 14 drinks between every emptying cycle; automatic rinses and the selected dose affect how quickly the container fills.
The listed 220–240 V, 1,450 W rating is not universal electrical advice. Use the voltage version sold for the country in which the machine will operate, and do not rely on an imported unit’s plug adapter to solve a voltage mismatch.
Milk frothing: what manual really means
Equipment and technique
A separate milk pitcher is practical, although a specific pitcher size is not established in the published specifications. Start with chilled milk, keep the steam tip just below the surface while introducing air, then lower the pitcher to create a smooth whirlpool. Stop before the milk overheats, tap and swirl the pitcher, and pour it into the prepared espresso.

Cleaning after every steaming session
Milk residue hardens quickly inside a steam tip. Purge the wand immediately after steaming, wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and follow the regional manual’s instructions for removing and rinsing the cappuccino maker. A machine that produces steam but is not cleaned promptly can develop blocked holes, poor foam and hygiene problems.
Who should choose this system
- Choose it if espresso or lungo is the priority and occasional manual cappuccinos are acceptable.
- Choose a different type of machine if every milk drink must be prepared with one button and minimal handling.
- Expect a short practice period: foam quality depends on milk temperature, pitcher position and air control, none of which the machine automates.
Adjusting coffee strength, grind and volume
The aroma control changes the dose used for the selected coffee. Quantity programming changes how much liquid is dispensed. These controls are independent of bean origin and roast, so a stronger setting cannot correct stale beans or an unsuitable grind by itself.
The support material for ECAM22.110.SB includes guidance for adjusting the mill. Make changes in small increments and only while the grinder is operating if the manual specifies that procedure. Large or frequent adjustments can lead to inconsistent dosing or a blocked grinder. Allow several coffees for the new setting to settle before judging the result.
Because no independent extraction measurements were available for this model, published 15 bar pump pressure should not be interpreted as a cup-quality score. Pump pressure is an engineering specification; flavor depends on dose, grind, water, temperature and the beans used.

Follow the regional manual rather than a generic Magnifica guide, because control layouts, water-hardness procedures and accessory codes can differ.

- After milk: purge and wipe the manual frother, then rinse the removable parts as directed.
- When prompted: empty the grounds container and drip tray; do not wait until either is overflowing.
- Regularly: rinse the water tank and inspect the brew group and seals according to the manual.
- When the descaling light or procedure appears: run the complete descaling cycle with the product specified for the local machine.
- For the drip tray: DeLonghi states that the removable drip-tray grid is dishwasher-safe. Confirm the local manual’s loading and temperature advice before using a dishwasher.
Water filter
DeLonghi lists a water filter as applicable to this model, and CHOICE lists a filter among the items supplied with the Australian package it reviewed. Filter type and replacement interval are market-dependent; this model information does not establish one universal replacement SKU. Match any replacement to the exact regional manual and machine suffix.
Descaling frequency
A single calendar interval cannot be given responsibly. Water hardness, filter use and beverage volume determine when descaling is required, and the machine’s prompts or manual procedure should govern. Using an unsuitable chemical or interrupting the cycle can damage components or leave residue.
What is included
CHOICE lists the machine, a water-hardness tester, measuring spoon, water filter, descaler and instructional DVD for its reviewed Australian package. That is a market- and date-specific listing, not a guarantee for every ECAM22.110.SB box. Retailer bundles and regional editions may omit or replace some items, so inspect the local contents list before assuming a filter, descaler or disc is included.

When checked for this review, DeLonghi’s English-language manufacturer page showed the machine out of stock. CHOICE labels it a discontinued model in Australia. Those observations apply to the specific pages and markets checked; they do not establish worldwide discontinuation or permanent unavailability. Local retailers may still have old stock, refurbished units or a suffix that differs by region.
Check the complete model code, plug and voltage, included accessories, seller’s return policy and warranty territory before paying. A 24-month warranty appears in CHOICE’s Australian listing, but warranty duration and service arrangements can differ elsewhere. If a listing drops punctuation or spacing in the code, verify that it is ECAM22.110.SB rather than a visually similar Magnifica variant.
