Verdict: the De’Longhi Magnifica ESAM 03.110.S is an older bean-to-cup espresso machine that automates grinding and coffee brewing but not milk texturing. You operate its steam wand or Cappuccino System yourself, so it suits someone who wants push-button espresso preparation and is willing to learn a short manual frothing routine. Because the model is discontinued, the condition of the individual machine, regional voltage, warranty and parts access matter more than the historical list price.
The exact model is supported on De’Longhi Australia’s site under ESAM03.110.S. Do not confuse it with newer ECAM-branded Magnifica S machines: those can use different controls, dimensions, electrical ratings and service procedures.
What the ESAM 03.110.S actually automates
“Automatic” describes the coffee side of this machine. It grinds beans, doses them and brews an espresso-style drink through the programmed coffee cycle. Milk is a separate, manual task. You position a jug under the steam outlet, introduce air and heat the milk, then stop the steam and clean the frother. There is no evidence that this exact model dispenses a complete, one-touch cappuccino without user intervention.

That is manufacturer promotional language from an approximately 2010 brochure, not an independent taste or texture test. The brochure also says the boiler is completely removable, making it easier to clean areas that are normally difficult to reach. Specifications, with the regional qualifications intact
Published specifications do not form one universal set. CHOICE lists the figures below for its exact-model page, while a Taiwanese distributor lists an electrical and dimensional configuration that may not apply to Australian, European or other machines. Treat the label on your appliance as authoritative.

Grind setting, bean freshness, dose, water quality, temperature, cleaning and the machine’s condition all affect results, and the surfaced CHOICE page keeps its detailed member test results private.
Availability and what “discontinued” changes
CHOICE marks the ESAM 03.110.S as discontinued. No current new-stock price, secondhand-market average or universal warranty status is established here. A listing that uses the model name may describe old inventory, a refurbished unit or a different Magnifica generation. Ask the seller for a photograph of the rating label and the full model string before paying.

Discontinuation does not automatically make a machine unusable. It does mean you should evaluate support as part of the purchase:
- Confirm that the appliance code matches the listing. De’Longhi’s Australian/New Zealand parts catalogue identifies regional variant ESAM03.110.S EX:1 under product code 0132212086.
- Check whether the seller provides a written warranty and who pays shipping for a repair.
- Verify that the water tank, brew-group/infuser assembly, frother tube and other wear parts are available for your market.
- Price the machine only after allowing for a descaling product, cleaning supplies and possible replacement seals or tubing.
The model-specific De’Longhi Group Spares page lists items such as EcoDecalk, a water-hardness test, cleaning brush, ESAM infuser assembly, water tank and Magnifica frother tube. Stock and prices can change, and the page is market-specific, so match the exact code rather than ordering by a similar product name.
How a normal coffee-and-milk session works
Before the first cup
- Read the safety notices and setup instructions for ESAM03.110.S in the manufacturer’s exact-model support page. Do not substitute instructions for a newer ECAM Magnifica S unless De’Longhi confirms they apply.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water without exceeding its marked maximum and seat it fully. A poorly seated tank can prevent water flow.
- Add suitable whole beans to the hopper. Keep the lid closed to limit moisture and avoid filling beyond the hopper’s marked capacity.
- Place a cup under the coffee outlet, power the machine and allow its startup/rinse cycle to finish. The first run may use water while the hydraulic circuit primes.
- Set the grinder and drink quantity conservatively, then adjust one change at a time after tasting. The available sources do not publish a universal grind position or dose, so use the manual’s control descriptions and your beans as the reference.
Brewing coffee
Select the coffee function shown on your control panel and let the machine complete its grinding and brewing cycle. Keep the cup in place until flow stops. If you change beans, allow several cycles for old grounds in the grinder to clear before judging the new setting. Because this is a discontinued model, control-panel symbols can differ by regional revision; photograph the panel and use the exact manual when a symbol is unclear.

Frothing milk manually
- Prepare cold milk in a metal jug, leaving room for expansion. Use a clean jug and a clean steam outlet.
- Activate the steam or Cappuccino System control and wait for the machine to indicate steam readiness. CHOICE reports 20 seconds to frothing readiness, but the time depends on the machine’s condition and the test method.
- Place the wand tip just below the milk surface and introduce a small amount of air. Keep the jug moving so the milk circulates rather than forming large bubbles.
- Lower or raise the jug slightly to heat and texture the milk, stopping before it overheats or boils. The goal is a glossy foam; the machine does not measure milk temperature for you.
- Close the steam control, wipe the wand immediately and purge it briefly according to the manual. This prevents milk from drying inside the outlet.
- Pour the textured milk into the coffee. Do not leave milk in the tube or jug while the machine is unattended.
The manual workflow is the main practical distinction between this ESAM and a one-touch machine with an automatic milk carafe. It gives you control over foam but adds handling, cleanup and a learning curve.

Cleaning, descaling and serviceable parts
Routine care is essential on an older automatic machine. Coffee oils, scale and dried milk can restrict flow or produce weak drinks even when the pump and heater are functioning. De’Longhi’s support material labels the relevant owner topics “Guide: Descaling” and “Guide: Cleaning the cappuccino maker after use.” Follow the sequence, quantities and indicator responses in the exact-model documentation rather than guessing from a generic Magnifica guide.
After each milk session
- Wipe the outside of the frother immediately.
- Purge the steam path as directed by the manual.
- Remove and rinse detachable frother components if your revision allows it, checking that the air intake is open.
- Empty milk from the jug and wash it separately; never store milk in the machine.
Regular coffee-side care
- Empty the grounds container and drip tray when indicated, then wash and dry them before refitting.
- Rinse the water tank with fresh water and inspect its seal and seating.
- Use the supplied or compatible cleaning brush to remove loose grounds from accessible areas.
- Remove and rinse the brew group only as the ESAM03110S manual specifies. Do not force a group that is not in its service position.
Descaling
Scale accumulation depends on water hardness and use. Test water hardness with the method supplied for your model, select the corresponding setting if the machine provides one, and run the complete descaling program with the recommended product. Do not interrupt the cycle or substitute an unapproved acid without checking the manual. The Australian/New Zealand parts page lists EcoDecalk and a water-hardness test, but availability and compatibility should be confirmed against your appliance code.

De’Longhi’s support centre groups common symptoms under “The coffee is weak,” “Lights are flashing or steadily on,” “Guide: Descaling,” “Guide: Cleaning the cappuccino maker after use,” and “Guide: Set Up and First Use.” Those labels are useful search terms when navigating the Magnifica S Help Center, but always cross-check that the article covers ESAM03.110.S rather than an ECAM variant.
The coffee is weak
- Check bean freshness and confirm that beans are actually feeding from the hopper.
- Inspect the water level and tank seating; restricted water flow can dilute or shorten a drink.
- Clean the brew group, coffee outlet and grinder area as the manual permits.
- Adjust the grinder in small increments, allowing several drinks between changes. A single cup immediately after an adjustment may still contain grounds from the previous setting.
- Run the prescribed descaling program if the machine is overdue or water flow has slowed.
- If weakness persists with clean internals and fresh beans, stop forcing adjustments and arrange qualified service.
Lights flashing or steadily on
Record which light or combination is illuminated, whether the tank and grounds container are seated, and what the machine was doing immediately beforehand. Use the indicator chart in the exact manual. Disconnect power only when the manual instructs you to do so; repeated resets can hide a fill, temperature or service fault.

Clean and purge the frother first. A blocked air intake, dried milk residue or scale can prevent proper steam mixing. Use cold milk and keep the wand tip at the correct depth. If the machine reaches coffee temperature but never reaches steam readiness, follow the support diagnostics rather than repeatedly cycling the control.

Regional voltage, dimensions and identification checks
The Taiwan distributor lists 120 V/60 Hz, 1,350 W and 280 × 364 × 400 mm. The older European brochure describes a 220–240 V environment and a different dimensional context. These figures cannot be merged into one global specification. Before importing or buying used:
- Read the rating plate for voltage, frequency and power.
- Compare the plug and local electrical requirements; an inexpensive plug adapter does not make a 120 V appliance safe on 230 V mains.
- Measure the machine with room to remove the water tank and open the bean lid. The listed depth is not the same as the clearance needed above or behind the appliance.
- Ask whether the unit was converted, repaired or stored for a long period.
Used-machine inspection checklist
Since new stock and current pricing are not verified, most buyers will encounter this model secondhand or as old inventory. Inspect in this order:
- Identity: photograph the label and confirm ESAM 03.110.S, the regional suffix and, where applicable, product code 0132212086.

Who should buy it?
