Short answer: The De’Longhi Icona CTO2003.BK is a documented two-slice toaster with 900 W power, adjustable electronic browning, defrost, fixed-time reheat, one-side bagel heating, cancel, extra lift, a removable crumb tray, and non-slip feet. Those are manufacturer-stated capabilities. The available official material does not establish how evenly it browns, how fast it toasts, how long it lasts, or whether it offers better value than another toaster.
That distinction matters when reading this DeLonghi Icona CTO2003.BK review. De’Longhi publishes operating instructions and specifications, but there is no independent test data to support claims about toast quality or comparative performance. Use the regional and electrical checks below before buying.
What the De’Longhi Icona CTO2003.BK is
CTO2003.BK is an Icona two-slice toaster. De’Longhi’s United States support center identifies the product as the “De’Longhi Icona 2 Slice Toaster – CTO2003BK” (without a dot before BK), while the De’Longhi Group Australia/New Zealand spares listing calls it “Icona CTO 2003.BK.” The different writing of the model number is a regional identification detail, not evidence of a different number of slots.

The AU/NZ listing describes a high-gloss Onyx Black body with chromed details. It identifies the regional product with code 0176129008 and lists the appliance as a two-slice toaster. Because that listing is regional, check the rating label on the appliance and the manual supplied for your country before treating its electrical or physical data as universal.

The dimensions are given in the manual as length, height, then depth. Measure your counter with that orientation in mind and leave room above the slots for lifting bread out. The 220–240 V figure is not a safe assumption for every market: a toaster designed for that range should not be connected to a different supply through an improvised adapter.
Controls and documented functions
Adjustable electronic browning
The toaster has a browning control knob. De’Longhi describes the control as progressive, allowing you to move through browning levels rather than choosing only one preset. The setting changes the target cycle for the bread; it is not a guarantee that every slice will emerge with identical color. Bread thickness, moisture, sugar, and starting temperature can all change the result, and the manufacturer material does not provide measured browning uniformity.
Defrost for frozen bread
Defrost mode is intended for bread placed in the toaster while frozen. The manual says this mode extends the toasting cycle. It is therefore different from simply selecting a darker browning number: the toaster gives frozen bread additional time to thaw and toast. The documentation does not state an exact extension in seconds or a required browning setting, so begin with a moderate setting and adjust on a later cycle rather than assuming a fixed result.
Electronic reheat
Reheat is described as a fixed-time function. It is for warming toast that is already cooked, not for replacing a normal toast cycle for raw or frozen bread. Because the time is fixed, the knob’s browning scale should not be interpreted as a precise reheat timer. The manual does not publish the fixed duration, so do not plan a recipe around a specific number of seconds.
One-side bagel mode
Yes, the CTO2003.BK has a bagel setting. De’Longhi’s manual says bagel mode toasts the inside of the bagel while the outside remains warm. Place the cut sides so the surfaces that need browning face the active heating side, following the orientation guidance in your local manual. The listing calls this a one-side bagel function; it is not a claim that both sides receive the same heat.

Stop/cancel
The stop/cancel button interrupts a cycle. The manual’s concise instruction is: “To stop toasting, press the stop/cancel button (I) at any moment.” Use that control if bread is browning sooner than expected or if you need to inspect it. Do not force the lever upward while the toaster is operating.
Extra lift
An extra-lift position raises the carriage farther than its normal finished position, making smaller slices easier to remove without putting fingers into the slots. The AU/NZ listing identifies this feature, but does not state its lift height in millimetres. Treat it as a retrieval aid rather than as a promise that every small item will clear the housing completely.
Indicators, tray, and feet
Neon function indicators show that a selected function is active. The removable crumb tray collects debris below the slots, and non-slip feet are intended to keep the appliance positioned on the counter. Neither feature supplies a performance rating: the documentation does not quantify indicator brightness, foot grip, tray capacity, or how often the tray must be emptied beyond the safety instruction to empty it regularly.
How to use the DeLonghi Icona toaster
The exact button symbols can vary slightly by market, so match the labels on your unit to the local manual. The operating sequence below follows the CTO2003 family instructions and the functions listed for CTO2003.BK.
Normal toasting
- Place the toaster on a stable, dry surface with the slots unobstructed and the cord positioned so it cannot be pulled across a hot surface.
- Put one or two slices into the slots. Choose slices that can move freely; do not force oversized bread into the openings.
- Turn the browning knob to the level you want. A lower setting is a shorter or lighter target and a higher setting is a longer or darker target, but the manual does not assign a universal shade or time to each number.
- Press the carriage lever down until it latches. The neon indicator for the selected function should show operation.
- Let the cycle finish, or press stop/cancel if you want to end it early. When the carriage rises, use the extra-lift position for small pieces rather than inserting a utensil into a slot.
Toasting frozen bread
- Place the frozen slices in the slots without trying to thaw them first.
- Select a browning level, then press the defrost control.
- Lower the carriage. Defrost extends the cycle according to the manual, so watch the first cycle closely and adjust the browning level next time if needed.
- Use stop/cancel to interrupt the cycle instead of pulling against the mechanism.
Reheating toast
- Put the already-cooked toast into the slots.
- Select reheat rather than a normal browning cycle.
- Lower the carriage and allow the fixed-time reheat function to run, or stop it early with cancel if the toast is warm enough.
Because De’Longhi does not publish the reheat duration in the supplied manual material, treat the first use as a check of how warm your particular slice becomes.

Using bagel mode
- Cut the bagel and separate the halves.
- Orient the halves so the cut interiors face the side that the bagel function heats, following the diagram or wording in your local manual.
- Select bagel and choose a browning level if the control remains available on your version.
- Lower the carriage. The manual says the interior is toasted while the exterior remains warm.
- Cancel the cycle if the interior reaches your preferred color before the program ends.
Cleaning and safe use
Unplug the toaster and let it cool before cleaning. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. De’Longhi says not to use abrasive cleaners and never to immerse the appliance in water. Those instructions protect both the finish and the electrical components; wiping around the controls is not a substitute for disconnecting the plug first.
Remove and empty the crumb tray regularly, then replace it securely. The manual gives an explicit reason: “The crumb tray (E) must be emptied regularly as accumulated crumbs could represent a fire risk.” Emptying frequency depends on how often and what you toast, so inspect the tray rather than waiting for it to be full. Clean crumbs only after the toaster is unplugged and cool.
- Do not insert a fork, knife, or other utensil into a slot.
- Do not try to free stuck bread by forcing the lever.
- Press stop/cancel, unplug the toaster, allow it to cool, and then deal with the obstruction using the procedure in the local manual.
- Keep the slots and surrounding area clear while the toaster is operating.
- Do not use abrasive products or immerse any part of the appliance.
The manual’s warning about utensils is important even when a slice appears reachable. Metal objects can contact live heating or electrical parts, and forcing the carriage can damage the mechanism. If bread repeatedly sticks, investigate slice size and the toaster’s condition rather than making the slot wider.
Electrical and regional checks before purchase
The CTO2003 family manual lists 220–240 V and 900 W. The AU/NZ listing also states 900 W, but it does not independently establish that the same dimensions, weight, or voltage apply in every country. Confirm all of the following on the box, rating plate, and local manual:
- The model suffix, such as CTO2003.BK or the local equivalent.
- Rated voltage and plug type for your country.
- Power rating and whether the appliance is intended for your household circuit.
- Local safety markings, instructions, and service arrangements.
- Whether the seller is supplying the regional version shown in its listing.
A 220–240 V appliance is not automatically suitable for a 100–120 V outlet. A plug adapter changes the shape of a plug, not the appliance’s operating voltage, and should not be treated as a voltage converter. If the rating label and listing disagree, rely on the rating label and ask De’Longhi support before connecting the toaster.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Counter space and day-to-day practicality
The manual’s 190 × 330 × 210 mm measurement is compact in one dimension but still needs clearance above the 330 mm height for raising the carriage and removing bread. The high-gloss black finish with chrome details is a visual specification, not a durability test: official documents do not establish how resistant it is to fingerprints, scratches, or heat discoloration.
Two slots mean the natural capacity is two slices per cycle. If a household routinely needs four slices at once, the relevant trade-off is cycle count rather than an unverified speed claim. The 900 W rating tells you the electrical input specified by De’Longhi; it does not by itself predict a particular time to toast or a particular shade.
What this review can and cannot conclude
Official documents establish the model identity, controls, safety instructions, and headline specifications. They do not establish independent toast-quality results. In particular, there is no documented laboratory or hands-on measurement here for:
- Color uniformity across a slice or between the two slots.
- Time to reach a given shade.
- Performance with thick bread, pastries, or unusual shapes.
- Long-term reliability, noise, energy use over repeated cycles, or repair frequency.
- Current retail price, stock, warranty terms in every geography, or comparative value.
Do not read the presence of browning control, defrost, reheat, or bagel mode as proof that the CTO2003.BK performs better than another toaster. Those are documented functions. A meaningful comparison requires the competing model’s regional specifications and the same kind of testing for both products.

| Decision axis | What to check for the CTO2003.BK | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Two slices | Determines how many cycles a household needs for several servings |
| Electrical fit | 900 W; 220–240 V in the CTO2003 manual | Must match the buyer’s supply and local rating label |
| Browning control | Progressive electronic control with adjustable knob | Provides a range of settings, but does not guarantee uniform color |
| Frozen bread | Defrost mode extends the cycle | Useful if bread is stored frozen |
| Reheating | Electronic reheat with fixed time | Warms cooked toast without selecting a normal toast cycle |
| Bagels | One-side mode; inside toasted, outside warm | Relevant if you regularly toast bagel interiors |
| Retrieval and cleanup | Extra lift and removable crumb tray | Addresses small slices and routine crumb removal |
| Footprint | 190 × 330 × 210 mm; 1.9 kg in the manual | Allows a genuine counter-space and storage comparison |
| Price and support | Verify locally at the time of purchase | Official material supplied here does not establish a current price, stock position, or universal warranty |
For toast quality, use a controlled comparison if you have access to both appliances: the same bread, starting temperature, slice thickness, browning setting, and number of slices. Record cycle time and inspect both sides. That would be a new test, not a conclusion supported by De’Longhi’s specifications.
Who should consider the CTO2003.BK?
It is a logical candidate for someone who wants a two-slice toaster with more than a basic heat cycle: adjustable browning, frozen-bread defrost, fixed-time reheat, and a one-side bagel function are all documented. The removable tray, extra lift, and non-slip feet address routine handling and cleanup.
It requires more caution from buyers outside the region represented by the listing. Verify voltage, plug, model suffix, and local service information before ordering. It is also a poor fit for anyone seeking an evidence-backed guarantee of especially even browning, unusually fast cycles, or superior longevity, because the supplied manufacturer material does not measure those outcomes.

The De’Longhi Icona CTO2003.BK is best understood as a feature-equipped two-slice toaster whose documented specification is clear but whose real-world performance remains unverified here. The strongest reasons to shortlist it are the one-side bagel, defrost, reheat, progressive browning, extra-lift, and removable-tray functions. The essential cautions are regional electrical compatibility and the absence of independent evidence about speed, evenness, reliability, price, or comparative value.
