Bottom line: The De’Longhi Icona Capitals CTOC4003.Y is a four-slot toaster in New York Yellow with six browning levels, separate controls for each side, and bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel settings. Its feature set suits a household making different toast at the same time. However, a public performance score for this exact yellow model is not available, and the UK price and stock snapshots conflict. Treat it as a feature-led buying decision, then verify the live listing, warranty and local specifications before paying.
Identify the exact toaster before you buy
“CTOC4003Y” is commonly written without punctuation, while De’Longhi’s product material styles the same yellow appliance as CTOC4003.Y and calls the finish New York Yellow. The Icona Capitals range also includes London Blue (CTOC4003.BL) and Sydney White (CTOC4003.W). Check the suffix and colour in the retailer’s title, photographs and product code; a listing that says only “Icona Capitals” may refer to another finish or a related page.
This is a four-slice model rather than a two-slot toaster with unusually long openings. De’Longhi lists four slots and two independent control panels. In practical terms, you can set the two sides separately when one person wants lightly browned bread and another wants a darker setting, instead of running one setting for all four slots. The independent controls are a design specification, not evidence that every type of bread will brown identically.

What the controls and presets actually do
Six browning positions
The six-position progressive dial gives you a repeatable starting point for adjusting colour. Bread thickness, moisture, sugar content, starting temperature and the number of consecutive cycles can all change the result, so the same number is not a guarantee of identical colour from every loaf. Use the first cycle as a reference, then move one position at a time rather than assuming position six corresponds to a particular number of minutes.
Bagel mode
Bagel is a dedicated setting listed by De’Longhi. The product information does not publish a measured heating pattern or a test result for this mode, so do not assume a specific side will be browned or that every bagel size will fit. Follow the operating instructions supplied with the unit and keep oversized or filled items out of the slots.
Defrost and reheat
Defrost is intended for bread that starts frozen, while reheat is for warming without selecting a fresh browning cycle. No timing tables are published for either function. Begin with a conservative browning position and supervise the first use with a new bread type; adjust only after you know how your loaf behaves.
Cancel and extra lift
Cancel stops a cycle before it completes. De’Longhi describes the extra-lift position as follows: “The exclusive extra-lift position is designed for easy and safe removal of small slices.” That sentence explains the purpose of the mechanism; it is not an independent laboratory safety result. Even with extra lift, remove food carefully and follow the manual’s warnings about hot surfaces and utensils.

How to use the CTOC4003.Y day to day
- Verify the appliance. Before plugging in, check that the label identifies CTOC4003.Y/CTOC4003Y, that the plug is correct for your country and that the supply is within the stated 220–240 V range.
- Position it safely. Set the toaster on a stable, dry surface with clearance around the openings. Keep curtains, paper and other heat-sensitive items away, and do not operate it inside an enclosed cupboard.
- Choose a side and setting. Put bread into the required slots and set the corresponding control panel. If two people are using the toaster, select a different browning position on each side rather than changing one control midway through a cycle.
- Select a preset only when it matches the food. Use bagel for bagels, defrost for frozen bread and reheat for warming an already toasted item. The ordinary browning control is the appropriate starting point for fresh bread.
- Start and observe the first cycle. Lower the lever and note the colour and fit of the bread. Bread that sits unusually high, catches or extends beyond the slot should not be forced down.
- Stop early when necessary. Press cancel if the toast is dark enough before the cycle ends. Do not use a knife, fork or other metal object to retrieve food while the toaster is connected.
- Use the lift for small pieces. Raise the carriage to its extra-lift position rather than reaching into the slot. The feature is a removal aid, not permission to touch heating elements.
- Empty the tray after the appliance is cool. Disconnect the toaster, allow it to cool, slide out the removable crumb tray and dispose of crumbs. Refit the tray before the next use; never immerse the toaster in water.
These steps explain how to use the advertised controls without promising a particular cycle time or colour. The supplied manual remains the authority for prohibited foods, cleaning products and electrical warnings.
What independent testing tells you—and what it does not
CHOICE: exact yellow model listed, scores restricted
CHOICE lists the CTOC4003Y in its expert toaster-testing database. The accessible listing identifies categories including performance, evenness, consistency, cleaning, safety and ease of use, but the overall rating and individual scores are available only to members. The existence of a listing is not a public pass mark, and no numerical result should be inferred from it.
CHOICE’s Australian entry also lists a price of A$209, a one-year warranty and China as the country of origin. Those are Australian listing details. They do not establish the UK price, UK warranty terms or the conditions attached to a UK purchase.

Which?: related blue variant and an older test programme
Which? lists the London Blue CTOC4003.BL rather than the yellow CTOC4003.Y. Its page gives slot dimensions of 14.1 × 3.3 × 12.4 cm and a 72 cm cable, and identifies testing conducted under a 2013–2019 programme. Which? warns that results from that programme should not be compared directly with tests performed before December 2013 or after September 2019.

Those dimensions and the cable length are useful clues for the family, but they are not confirmed yellow-model specifications. Colour variants can share a chassis, yet a retailer’s current technical sheet or the label on the exact unit is the proper source for a purchase decision. The older programme date also means a blue-variant result would not be a current, exact-model performance score.
What remains unproven publicly
- No accessible source supplies a public score for the yellow model’s browning evenness or repeatability.
- There is no published result here for single-slice operation, frozen bread, bagel performance or the temperature of the exterior.
- No public hands-on assessment is available for this model, so the feature list should not be presented as a test verdict.
Fit, bread types and kitchen space
The only published slot measurements in the available material belong to the blue CTOC4003.BL: 14.1 × 3.3 × 12.4 cm. Use them as related-variant information, not as a guaranteed measurement for the yellow unit. If you routinely buy thick-cut bread, large artisan slices, waffles or specialty pastries, ask the seller for the yellow model’s slot dimensions and check the shape against your food before ordering.
A four-slot toaster occupies more counter width than a compact two-slot model. The 3.046 kg listed weight may make it less convenient to move after every use, but it can also make a full-size appliance feel more planted; that latter impression is a general ergonomics consideration, not a measured stability result for this model. Measure the available counter area, including room to remove the crumb tray and to operate the levers without touching a wall or cabinet.
If your household usually toasts one slice, the two independent controls still give flexibility, but four slots may be unnecessary counter capacity. If breakfast involves two different browning preferences at once, the dual-panel layout is more relevant than the colour finish.

Power, placement and maintenance considerations
At 1,800 W and 220–240 V, this toaster belongs on a circuit and outlet suitable for that load. Do not use a travel adaptor or extension arrangement that is not rated for the appliance. The wattage is an input specification; it does not tell you how quickly the toaster browns bread or whether it draws the full amount throughout a cycle.
Crumbs are the routine maintenance issue. Unplug the toaster, let it cool, remove the tray, empty it and replace it. Do not shake the appliance over a sink, pour liquid into the slots or insert tools to dislodge food. For smoke, a burning smell that does not clear after crumbs are removed, a lever that will not latch or a control that behaves unpredictably, disconnect the appliance and consult De’Longhi support or the manual rather than attempting an internal repair.

How to compare it with another four-slice toaster
Do not choose on colour or slot count alone. A meaningful comparison should use the same bread and the same decision criteria:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Evenness and repeatability | Are slices browned consistently across a cycle and from one cycle to the next? | Feature lists cannot establish this; look for a current, transparent test with methods. |
| Single-slice behaviour | Does the toaster handle one slice without excessive colour variation? | Important when four slots are not always filled. |
| Frozen-bread performance | Does the defrost programme produce the desired result without repeated cycles? | Useful for households storing bread in a freezer. |
| Slot fit | What are the verified slot length, width and depth for the exact variant? | Related-colour measurements should not be treated as exact. |
| Controls | Are the two sides independently adjustable, and are the labels easy to read? | Separate settings are the CTOC4003.Y’s main convenience advantage. |
| Cleaning | Is the crumb tray removable, and can it be reached with the appliance in its normal position? | Regular crumb removal is easier when the tray is accessible. |
| Safety evidence | Are exterior temperature and fault protections reported by a credible tester? | The CTOC4003.Y feature material does not provide those measurements. |
| After-sales support | What warranty and service terms apply in your country? | Australian terms cannot be assumed for a UK purchase. |
| Current local cost | What is the live delivered price and stock status? | The £114.99 snapshot and conflicting stock states may be out of date. |
Who should consider the CTOC4003.Y?
A good fit when
- You want four slots and regularly prepare breakfast for more than one person.
- Two users need different browning settings at the same time.
- You value dedicated bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel buttons more than a minimal control layout.
- You like the New York Yellow finish and have confirmed the exact suffix, local voltage and current warranty.
- You are comfortable making a purchase without a public score for the yellow model, provided the feature set meets your needs.
Look elsewhere when
- You need independently verified results for evenness, outside temperature or frozen-food performance before buying.
- Your counter only accommodates a narrow two-slot appliance.
- You require confirmed slot measurements for thick or unusually shaped bread and the seller cannot provide them.
- You are buying outside the 220–240 V market without a model-specific electrical confirmation.
- You expect the Australian A$209 price or one-year warranty to apply automatically in the UK or another country.
Verdict
The De’Longhi Icona Capitals CTOC4003.Y makes the most sense as a design-and-controls purchase: four slots, two independently adjustable sides, six browning positions and four useful presets in a distinctive yellow finish. Its removable crumb tray and extra-lift mechanism address everyday handling, especially for small slices. The limitation is evidence, not a missing headline feature: public pages do not reveal an exact-yellow performance score, and the available related-variant measurements come from an older blue-model listing.
Buy only after checking a live UK listing for the CTOC4003.Y suffix, delivered price, stock, slot measurements and local warranty. If those details suit your kitchen and you mainly need flexible four-slot controls, the specification is credible. If your decision depends on measured toast quality or safety temperatures, wait for an accessible, current test of the exact model or choose a toaster with published results.
