The De’Longhi HFX85W20C is a discontinued tower appliance that combines a fan heater, cooling-fan mode and particulate filter. Its documented strengths are a claimed 2,000 W maximum heat output, directional airflow and one appliance for three jobs. Its biggest limitation is evidence: the headline purification figure is a narrowly qualified laboratory claim, while accessible independent testing does not establish how it performs in a real room.
That makes the HFX85W20C worth considering only when you can verify local stock, warranty coverage, voltage and replacement-filter availability. Treat it as a compact comfort appliance with an added filter, not as proof of medical-grade air cleaning or a modern, independently benchmarked purifier.

The figures come from different publications and contexts. The brochure gives 7.4 kg and 270 × 270 × 850 mm, while CHOICE lists 7.3 kg and 84 × 19 × 23 cm. Those differences may reflect measurement conventions or category records; they are not a reason to assume that either source is universally correct for every regional unit.
What the HFX85W20C is designed to do
De’Longhi’s support material labels the HFX85W20C “Air purifier, heater and cooling fan.” It is a tall, floor-standing device intended to provide personal or room comfort without separate boxes for a heater, fan and filter. In winter, the heating element supplies warmth; in warmer weather, the fan moves room air; in purifier mode, air passes through the fitted particulate filter.

This combination is useful where floor space, storage or a single control system matters more than best-in-class performance in any one category. It also creates compromises. A fan heater must consume substantial electrical power to produce heat, while a purifier needs adequate clean-air delivery and a maintained filter. The available public material does not provide an independently measured clean-air delivery rate, noise curve, thermostat accuracy or filter-life test, so those factors should be treated as unknowns rather than inferred from the three-in-one design.
Heating: what is documented and what is not
Output and settings
The 2018 De’Longhi Comfort brochure specifies 2,000 W. CHOICE’s heater listing also records a claimed maximum of 2,000 W, one heat setting, six fan settings and a 1.7 m cord. A 2,000 W rating describes the electrical draw at the stated operating condition; it does not tell you how quickly a particular room will warm. Results depend on insulation, outdoor temperature, ceiling height, starting temperature and whether the thermostat cycles the element.
The one-heat-setting entry means you should not assume a low-wattage heat mode from the public listing. Fan-speed choices can alter how strongly warm air is distributed, but they are not the same thing as multiple independently rated heat levels. If lower energy use is important, verify the controls on the exact regional unit and watch the appliance’s actual draw with a suitable power meter rather than relying on the number of fan settings.

De’Longhi’s support page provides guidance for heating operation, timer use and airflow direction, but the accessible material does not publish an independent thermostat-accuracy result or a measured time-to-temperature. Place the tower where its outlet is clear and where warm air can circulate; do not press it against curtains, bedding or furniture. Use the regional manual’s control sequence for selecting heat and the target temperature, because button names and display behavior can vary by market.

Estimating electricity use
At the brochure’s full 2,000 W rating, one hour of continuous operation is 2 kWh. Multiply 2 by your electricity tariff to estimate the energy cost for that hour, then reduce the estimate when the thermostat cycles the element off. This is a calculation from the published wattage, not a measured consumption profile for the HFX85W20C. A timer and thermostat can reduce runtime, but they cannot make a 2,000 W heating element consume less than its rated power while it is actively heating.
Cooling-fan mode: air movement, not air conditioning
The third function is a cooling fan. It circulates existing room air and can make occupants feel cooler through increased air movement. It does not provide the compressor, refrigerant circuit or dehumidification associated with an air conditioner. On a hot day, the room itself will not be cooled below ambient temperature by fan-only operation.
The brochure’s purification test condition uses cooling-fan speed 5, and CHOICE’s air-purifier record lists ten fan settings. These references show that the appliance has selectable airflow levels, but they do not establish the airflow volume or sound level at each setting. If you need quiet nighttime operation or a known air-exchange rate, look for an independent measurement for the exact model and region before buying.
Air purification: understand the 99.9% figure
The stated test condition
De’Longhi’s brochure says the HFX85W20C can reach “up to 99.9% efficiency” for 5 µm particles at an airflow of 60 m³/h while running cooling-fan speed 5. The brochure attributes the result to a third-party test on MPPS particles to EN 1822:2010. Every part of that qualification matters: particle size, airflow, fan setting, test method and the word “up to.”

Efficiency in a test apparatus is not the same as the percentage of pollutants removed from your room. A room result also depends on room volume, doors and windows, pollutant generation, air mixing, filter loading and how long the appliance runs. The published statement does not establish removal of gases or odors, performance against every particle size, virus or allergen reduction, or a health benefit.
What the claim cannot tell you
- It does not provide a clean-air delivery rate for a defined room.
- It does not show how performance changes at the other fan settings.
- It does not state noise levels, energy use in purifier mode or pressure drop as the filter loads.
- It does not establish that 99.9% of particles entering a typical occupied room will be removed.
- It does not substitute for ventilation, source control or professional advice for smoke, hazardous dust or medical concerns.
Use the figure as a description of a particular laboratory result, not as a promise that the tower will purify all room air to a specified standard.
Filter design and replacement planning
De’Longhi Australia’s spare-parts catalogue lists a 360° double-layer particulate air filter compatible with HFX85W20C. The 360° description indicates the filter is intended to accept air around the tower rather than through a single narrow face. It does not reveal the filter media grade, dust capacity or expected service interval.

Because the model is discontinued, replacement logistics deserve attention before purchase. Confirm all of the following with the seller or the manufacturer’s regional parts channel:

- The filter is intended for your exact HFX85W20C variant and voltage region.
- The part number and dimensions match the filter compartment in your unit.
- Replacement stock is available where you live, not just listed on an overseas site.
- The seller states how to install and dispose of the used filter.
- The warranty remains valid when the filter is replaced with that part.
No verified source establishes a replacement interval, current filter price or remaining production stock. Do not schedule purchases by a generic “every six months” rule; follow the indicator or cleaning instructions in your regional manual and replace the element when the manufacturer specifies.
Controls and everyday operation
The official support page covers heating, fan mode, timer operation, cleaning and maintenance, display messages, airflow direction and operation without the remote. Since exact button labels can differ by market, use this workflow with the manual supplied for your unit:
- Position and connect. Set the tower upright on a stable, level surface with clear space around the air inlet and outlet. Check the rating plate before plugging it into a matching 220–240 V, 50 Hz supply; do not assume that specification applies to an imported unit.
- Select the function. Choose heating or fan operation using the control panel or remote described in your manual. In fan mode, select the desired airflow level; in heating mode, select the temperature or heat control available on your model.
- Set airflow direction. Use the documented airflow-direction control to aim air where occupants need it. Keep the outlet unobstructed even when the stream is aimed away from you.
- Use the timer. Set the timer through the control sequence in the manual, then check the display for the confirmation described for your region. A timer is useful for limiting runtime, but it is not a substitute for safe placement.
- Operate without the remote. If the remote is unavailable, use the physical controls identified in the support instructions. The available documentation confirms remote-free operation but does not establish a universal button layout.
- Power down and maintain. Switch the appliance off, unplug it and allow hot components to cool before cleaning. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning method; do not wet electrical parts or reinstall a filter that is not approved for the model.
Display messages should be interpreted with the regional manual. If a warning persists after the prescribed reset or cleaning step, disconnect the appliance and contact an authorized service channel rather than repeatedly operating it.

Size, weight and placement
The brochure’s 270 × 270 × 850 mm dimensions describe a tall footprint of roughly 27 cm square and an 85 cm height. CHOICE’s air-purifier record instead lists 84 × 19 × 23 cm, while its heater record gives 7.3 kg; the brochure gives 7.4 kg. Measure the actual unit or obtain a retailer’s regional specification if a narrow shelf, cabinet or doorway is involved.

The tower format can free wall and table space, but its height makes stability and clearance important. Keep it away from water, damp locations, combustible materials and areas where it can be knocked over. The 1.7 m cord listed by CHOICE may limit placement in a large room, and extension-cord use should follow the electrical safety guidance for your country and the appliance manual.
Independent evidence and discontinued status
Public CHOICE records classify the HFX85W20C as discontinued in both heater and air-purifier listings. Those records expose selected specifications, including the settings, dimensions and weight, but detailed expert ratings and test results are reserved for members. There is therefore no accessible, independently verified score here for heating speed, noise, particle-cleaning rate, thermostat behavior or running cost.
Discontinued does not automatically mean unusable. It does mean that inventory may be old, a retailer may be selling a returned or display unit, and future parts support may vary by country. Ask for the manufacturing date if available, inspect the filter compartment and cord, and obtain written warranty and return terms before paying.

It may make sense when
- You want one floor-standing appliance for occasional heating, air circulation and particulate filtration.
- You can verify that the local model matches your electrical supply and that a compatible filter is obtainable.
- You accept that the purification evidence is a conditional laboratory claim rather than an independently measured room-performance rating.
- You value a tower footprint and directional airflow more than detailed modern app features or published acoustic data.
Choose a different approach when
- You need independently measured clean-air delivery, noise and energy figures before purchase.
- You require cooling below room temperature or humidity control.
- You need a guaranteed supply of filters for many years.
- You are treating smoke, hazardous dust, severe allergies or a clinical respiratory problem and need validated filtration and ventilation guidance.
- You cannot verify the voltage, warranty or return policy for the specific discontinued unit.
Compare it on the right axes
When comparing the HFX85W20C with another heater, fan or purifier, avoid counting features alone. Use the same questions for every candidate:

This method prevents a broad “three functions” label from hiding the measurements that determine whether the appliance actually suits your room.
Buying and setup checklist
- Read the rating plate and confirm voltage, frequency and maximum wattage for your country.
- Measure the intended floor position, doorway and storage space; account for the tower’s height and cord reach.
- Ask whether the unit is new, refurbished, a display model or previously returned.
- Get the warranty duration, return window and service contact in writing.
- Verify that the 360° double-layer filter is available for your exact regional variant and ask for the correct part number.
- Inspect the power cord, plug, controls, remote and filter compartment before accepting delivery.
- Run fan mode first, then heating, checking that airflow is unobstructed and that no warning message appears.
- Record the seller’s instructions for cleaning, timer use and any filter indicator before discarding the packaging.
Bottom line
The De’Longhi HFX85W20C is a plausible space-saving heater, fan and particulate-filter combination, but the evidence supports a cautious purchase rather than an enthusiastic performance verdict. The 2,000 W rating, directional airflow and documented replacement filter are useful facts. The 99.9% figure applies only to specified 5 µm particles at 60 m³/h and fan speed 5, and accessible independent testing does not show how the appliance ranks for real-room purification, noise or heating. Because CHOICE lists it as discontinued, buy only when local stock, electrical compatibility, warranty and filter supply are confirmed.
