Verdict: The DeLonghi Avvolta CTA2003.BK is a two-slice toaster with adjustable browning, defrost, reheat and cancel controls. Public information confirms its dimensions, bread-carriage size, listed warranty and operating instructions, but the independent CHOICE performance scores for evenness, consistency, multigrain, frozen bread and single-slice results are restricted to members. You can assess the design and documented functions from the available material; you cannot honestly claim a tested performance ranking from the public listing.
What the DeLonghi Avvolta CTA2003.BK is
The CTA2003.BK is a two-slot, two-slice household toaster in DeLonghi’s Avvolta range. Its basic job is straightforward: lower bread into the slots, choose a browning setting, and let the automatic cycle finish. The controls documented in the product manual add three useful modes: defrost for frozen bread, reheat for warming toast, and stop/cancel for ending a cycle early.
That description matters because similarly named DeLonghi toasters exist in other ranges and markets. The model designation must read CTA2003.BK; the “BK” suffix and the Avvolta name identify the unit discussed here. A listing for another model with a similar numeric suffix is not evidence that it has the same slots, controls, warranty or spare parts.

Published specifications and what they mean on a counter
| Specification | Published detail | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Model | DeLonghi Avvolta CTA2003.BK | Match this exact code when checking a retailer, manual or service record. |
| Capacity | Two slots; two slices | It is intended for one or two slices per cycle, not four-slice batches. |
| Overall dimensions | 32 × 20 × 21 cm, as listed by CHOICE | Allow space for the appliance itself and for the lever and crumb-tray access. |
| Bread-carriage dimensions | 140 × 30 × 120 mm, as listed by CHOICE | Use these published carriage measurements as a fit reference; bread shape and thickness still affect results. |
| Documented controls | Browning dial, defrost, reheat and stop/cancel | These are the functions described in the CTA2003BK manual. |
| Warranty shown on the Australian CHOICE listing | 1 year | Treat this as a regional listing detail and verify the terms for your purchase location. |
| Price shown on that listing | A$199 | This is the page’s displayed figure, not confirmation of a current retail offer. |
| Country of origin shown by CHOICE | China | Origin does not by itself establish performance, safety certification or service coverage in your market. |
| Warming rack | Present only on some models according to the manual | Do not assume one is included with every CTA2003.BK package; check the regional box contents. |
The 32-centimetre length and 20-centimetre width are the dimensions to compare with the usable area beside your kettle or coffee machine. Height is 21 centimetres, but the toaster also needs overhead clearance for inserting bread and lifting the carriage. Keep the crumb tray accessible rather than pushing the rear of the unit against a wall or another appliance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Controls and operating modes
Adjustable browning
The browning dial sets the darkness target for the normal toast cycle. It is a control preference, not a guarantee that every type of bread will brown identically. Moisture, slice thickness and whether the bread is frozen can change the outcome, so use the setting as a starting point and adjust it between cycles.
Defrost for frozen bread
The manual identifies a defrost function for bread taken directly from the freezer. Defrost prolongs the cycle, giving frozen slices additional time to thaw and toast. Because this is a longer program, remain with the toaster and watch for the level of browning you want rather than assuming the normal-cycle setting will behave the same way.
Reheat for already toasted bread
Reheat runs for a fixed time. The manual specifically says that the browning dial cannot change that reheat duration. Use reheat when toast needs warming rather than additional browning; if you want a darker result, the ordinary cycle and a lower starting setting are the appropriate controls.
Stop or cancel
The stop/cancel control ends an active cycle. It is useful when toast reaches the desired colour early or when you need to interrupt operation. Cancelling is preferable to forcing the lever upward or trying to pull bread out while the heating cycle is running.

Lever, slots and crumb tray
The lever lowers the bread carriage into the slots and raises it when the cycle is complete. The manual also identifies a removable crumb tray. Emptying that tray regularly is part of normal care, not an optional cosmetic task: accumulated crumbs can smoke or burn.
Warming rack uncertainty
The manual describes a warming rack as available only on some models. That wording is a warning against assuming every regional CTA2003.BK carton contains the accessory. Confirm the exact package contents before paying extra for a rack or planning to warm food on it.
What the public independent review does—and does not—show
CHOICE has an exact-model listing for the CTA2003.BK. The public page identifies the toaster and displays specifications, but its Expert Rating and performance measures are members-only. The concealed categories include evenness, consistency, multigrain performance, frozen-bread performance and single-slice results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause those measurements are not publicly visible, there is no defensible score, pass/fail conclusion or comparative ranking to report here. No independently verifiable named performance statistic or attributable reviewer quotation is available in the accessible material. Any article claiming that this model toasted more evenly than a particular rival, or assigning it a numerical rating, would be adding information that the public evidence does not establish.

For a purchase decision, separate the questions that can be answered from those that cannot:
- Documented: two-slice capacity, published dimensions, bread-carriage dimensions, control modes, the Australian listing’s one-year warranty, and the operating and safety directions in the manual.
- Not publicly established: measured browning evenness, repeatability from cycle to cycle, results with multigrain bread, frozen slices or one-slice operation, and any overall CHOICE score.
If independently measured toast quality is your main criterion, obtain access to the full CHOICE report or conduct a returnable, side-by-side test under your own conditions. Do not treat the A$199 listing price or the feature list as a substitute for a performance measurement.
Fit, capacity and day-to-day practicality
Two slices per cycle
A two-slot design suits one or two people who normally make a small breakfast. It requires another cycle when three or four slices are needed, so households serving several people should account for the extra waiting time. The available material does not provide a measured cycle duration, heating power or a claim about throughput.
Use the carriage size as a check, not a promise
CHOICE lists the bread carriage at 140 × 30 × 120 millimetres. Those figures provide a useful dimensional reference, but they do not guarantee that every loaf will sit centrally or brown evenly. Bread that is too large for a slot can be forced against the mechanism; unusually thin or damaged slices can be difficult to handle safely. Follow the manual’s restrictions rather than stretching the published measurements into a promise of compatibility with oversized, filled or irregular food.

Counter-space planning
Measure the intended location before buying. The appliance footprint is 32 × 20 centimetres, and the 21-centimetre height is measured with the toaster standing on the counter. Leave room to operate the lever, remove the crumb tray and keep the unit away from curtains or other combustible materials. Do not cover it during operation.
Safety instructions that should change how you use it
The CTA2003BK manual treats toaster safety as an active responsibility. A toaster should not be left running while you leave the room, and the manual warns that burnt food can catch fire. Stay with the appliance through the cycle, especially when trying a new bread type or a defrost setting.
- Keep the toaster under observation while it operates.
- Position it away from curtains and other combustible materials.
- Never cover the appliance during use.
- Do not warm topped or filled food in the slots. Ingredients can melt, drip or burn where the toaster is not designed to contain them.
- Do not force oversized food into a slot.
- Avoid very thin or broken slices that can lodge in the mechanism or toast unpredictably.
- Clean the crumb tray regularly. Crumbs left inside can smoke or ignite.
These are paraphrased highlights, not a replacement for the complete manual. Read the safety section supplied with your regional unit, including any instructions about cleaning, unplugging and dealing with a slice that does not rise. If a problem is outside the manual’s instructions, stop using the toaster and contact an authorized service channel for your region rather than improvising inside the appliance.
Warranty, service and replacement-part cautions
The Australian CHOICE listing displays a one-year warranty. That is useful for understanding the listing, but warranty obligations depend on the country where the toaster is sold and the seller’s documentation. Before purchase, retain the receipt and confirm who handles a claim, what proof of purchase is required, and whether transport or inspection costs are covered.

DeLonghi’s US warranty information directs customers to the product packaging or manual for the specific warranty terms. It also makes a general corporate statement about replacement parts, repair services and maintenance information being available for a reasonable time for products that require servicing. That US statement is not proof that an Australian CTA2003.BK part is in stock, nor does it establish the terms in another country.
Be particularly careful with model numbers. A DeLonghi Australia spares page for the Icona CTO 2003.BK describes a different two-slice toaster and lists 900 W. The shared “2003.BK” ending does not make its parts compatible with the Avvolta CTA2003.BK. Match the complete model name and code, and ask the service provider to confirm compatibility before ordering a lever, tray or other component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check a listing before you buy
- Verify the identity. Look for “Avvolta CTA2003.BK” in the product title, specifications and photographs. Do not rely on a partial code such as “2003.BK.”
- Confirm the market. Check the country, plug, voltage and seller because warranty and electrical versions are regional. The Australian CHOICE details cannot automatically be applied to another market.
- Measure your counter. Reserve at least the published 32 × 20 × 21 centimetres, plus practical clearance for the lever, slots and crumb tray.
- Check package contents. Ask whether the warming rack is included in that exact regional box; the manual says it is present only on some models.
- Read the warranty terms. Compare the seller’s written coverage with the one-year figure shown on the Australian listing and save the receipt.
- Check the current price and stock. A$199 is the figure displayed by CHOICE, not a verified current offer. Confirm the live price, delivery, returns and availability at the point of sale.
- Set expectations about testing. If you need measured toast-quality data, obtain the full CHOICE results or use a retailer with a suitable return policy; the public page does not expose those scores.
A safe first-use routine
- Place the toaster on a stable, clear counter away from curtains and other combustible items. Make sure the crumb tray is fitted as described by the manual.
- Check that the bread is an appropriate size and condition. Do not force oversized food into a slot, and do not use topped, filled, very thin or broken slices.
- Choose a browning setting on the dial for a normal cycle. Treat the first run with a particular bread as a trial and remain beside the toaster.
- Lower the lever with one or two slices in the slots and watch the cycle rather than leaving the room.
- Use defrost for frozen bread, remembering that this program extends the cycle.
- Use reheat for toast that is already cooked but needs warming. Its time is fixed, so the browning dial does not alter the reheat duration.
- Press stop/cancel if the toast reaches the desired result early or you need to interrupt the cycle.
- After use, allow the unit to cool as directed in the manual and empty the crumb tray regularly so crumbs do not accumulate.
How it compares with other two-slice toasters
The available evidence supports a comparison framework, not a league table. For another toaster to be a meaningful alternative, compare the same practical axes:
| Comparison axis | CTA2003.BK information available | What to verify for another model |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Two slots and two slices | Number of slots and whether the stated capacity is one slice per slot. |
| Functions | Browning adjustment, defrost, reheat and cancel documented | Whether frozen-food and reheating modes exist and how each mode behaves. |
| Size | 32 × 20 × 21 cm listed by CHOICE | Published footprint, height and the clearance needed to access controls and trays. |
| Bread fit | 140 × 30 × 120 mm carriage dimensions listed | Slot and carriage dimensions, plus warnings for thin, broken or oversized bread. |
| Independent data | CHOICE categories are listed publicly, but scores are members-only | Whether test methods and actual results are openly available. |
| Warranty | One year shown on the Australian listing | Country-specific term, exclusions and claim process. |
| Price | A$199 displayed on the CHOICE page; current status not confirmed | Live price, stock, delivery and return conditions. |
| Parts | Do not infer compatibility from the Icona CTO 2003.BK listing | Exact-model parts support from an authorized regional channel. |
No current price comparison or independent performance comparison with another toaster is established here. That is why the CTA2003.BK should be selected for its documented capacity, controls, dimensions and verified local support—not for an unreported score or an assumed advantage over a different model.
Who should buy it—and who should wait
It may suit you if
- You want a compact two-slice toaster and normally prepare one or two slices at a time.
- You need a documented defrost mode for frozen bread and a separate fixed-time reheat mode.
- The 32 × 20 × 21-centimetre footprint fits your counter with operating clearance.
- You can confirm the exact regional warranty, plug and package contents before purchase.
Pause before buying if
- You need four slices in one cycle or a published high-throughput specification.
- Your decision depends on independently measured evenness, consistency, multigrain, frozen-bread or single-slice results; the public CHOICE page does not reveal those scores.
- You require a warming rack and the seller cannot confirm that the accessory is in the specific box.
- You are relying on parts listed for the Icona CTO 2003.BK rather than parts confirmed for the Avvolta CTA2003.BK.
- The seller cannot provide clear regional warranty and return information.
Bottom line on the DeLonghi Avvolta CTA2003.BK
The CTA2003.BK is a clearly identified two-slice toaster with useful documented controls and a manageable countertop footprint. The manual provides specific guidance for defrost, reheat, cancel, bread selection and crumb maintenance, while the CHOICE listing supplies dimensions, carriage measurements, an Australian one-year warranty listing and an A$199 displayed price. Those facts are enough to judge basic fit and features. They are not enough to claim superior toast quality, because the relevant CHOICE performance results remain behind the members-only section. Buy only after matching the exact model to your market, confirming the live price and warranty, checking whether a warming rack is included, and treating safety and regular crumb-tray cleaning as part of ownership.
