Verdict: The Dell 14S is a well-built, configurable 14-inch laptop for work, study, streaming, and light editing. Its aluminum chassis, OLED display option, modern ports, Wi-Fi 7, and nine-hour streaming result make it more versatile than a basic budget notebook. The trade-offs are equally clear: upgrades raise the price quickly, the 3.4-pound body is not class-leading in weight, and the laptop has no SD card slot. The available evidence does not establish it as a gaming or heavy-creation machine.
This review is based on Cameron Aubernon’s SlashGear evaluation published August 14, 2026. Prices, configurations, and the tested specifications below are historical article-date information, not live offers; check the exact configuration before buying.
What is the Dell 14S?
The Dell 14S sits between Dell’s budget-focused Inspiron family and its premium XPS range. It is a conventional clamshell notebook rather than a detachable or 360-degree convertible, but Dell offers enough processor, memory, storage, display, and touch-screen choices to make the model fit several different budgets and workloads.
The practical target is everyday computing: browser-based work, documents, video calls, school software, streaming, and occasional light photo or video work. The review did not test demanding 3D games, sustained professional rendering, or a controlled creative-production workload, so those uses should not be inferred from the specifications alone.

Configuration matters more than the model name. A 14S with a six-core Core Ultra 5 processor, 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB drive, and a conventional FHD+ panel is a different value proposition from a 14S with an Ultra 9 processor, 32 GB of memory, 2 TB of storage, and a QHD+ OLED touchscreen.

Dell can change regional combinations and availability. Treat this table as a description of the configurations reported in the August 14, 2026 review, not a guarantee that every combination is still orderable.
Price and value: the configuration determines the answer
The review reported a Dell 14S range of $1,249 to $1,799, with the tested configuration listed at $1,469 on August 14, 2026. Those figures were the prices reported in that article and are not verified current prices. Promotions, inventory, regional taxes, and configuration changes can move the total substantially.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The wide spread is important because the 14S is sold as a configurable platform rather than one fixed product. Processor, memory, storage, and display upgrades can each increase the price. A sensible comparison therefore starts with like-for-like specifications:
- Match the processor tier before comparing headline prices.
- Match 16 GB versus 32 GB memory; memory capacity is not an incidental difference for long-term multitasking.
- Compare 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB storage at the same time, because a cheaper base model may need an upgrade immediately.
- Identify whether the panel is FHD+, QHD+, OLED, or touch-enabled.
- Include the value of ports and accessories, especially if you regularly import files from SD cards.
At the reported test price, the 14S is not a bare-bones budget laptop. Its justification is the combination of a metal chassis, high-end display option, current connectivity, and broad configuration range. If you do not need an OLED panel, extra storage, or a faster processor, a lower specification may deliver better value.
Design, size, and portability
The review describes a three-piece aluminum body offered in Frost Blue or Celestial Blue. The metal construction gives the 14S a more premium feel than a typical entry-level plastic notebook, while retaining a conventional shape that should fit ordinary laptop bags and sleeves.
The reported dimensions are 0.61 inches thick and 3.4 pounds. That is portable for a 14-inch computer, but it is not unusually light: the reviewer notes that some competing models are around three pounds or less. The difference matters if you carry the computer all day alongside books, chargers, or camera equipment.

There is a useful distinction between portability and travel minimalism here. The 14S is thin enough for commuting and office use, yet its weight is closer to a sturdy mainstream notebook than an ultralight specialist. Buyers who prioritize the lowest possible carry weight should compare measured weights, not just screen size or thickness.

Display choices: choose the panel before you choose the processor
Dell lists five 14-inch FHD+ and QHD+ display options, including two touch-enabled choices. The review unit used the most visually distinctive option described in the article: a 1920×1200 OLED touchscreen running at 60 Hz, rated at 300 nits, with Dolby Vision and ComfortView Plus.
That resolution is a 16:10 format, giving more vertical workspace than a traditional 16:9 1920×1080 panel. It is useful for documents, web pages, and timelines because more content can fit on screen before scrolling. OLED can also provide stronger contrast than a conventional LCD, which benefits films and dark interfaces.
The 300-nit rating is a specification for the tested panel, not a promise that every 14S screen reaches the same brightness. A 14S with a different FHD+ or QHD+ panel may look and consume power differently. Check the exact panel listed in the configuration page, especially if you work beside windows or outdoors.
Touch is optional rather than universal. If you annotate documents, use creative touch applications, or prefer tapping controls, select one of the two touch configurations. If you mostly type and use a mouse, spending more for touch may not improve your experience.
Performance: comfortable everyday speed, limited evidence for heavy workloads
The tested laptop used an eight-core Intel Core Ultra 7 355, 16 GB of LPDDR5x memory, and a 512 GB NVMe SSD. Aubernon reports Geekbench 7 results of 2,428 single-core and 11,142 multi-core. These are the review unit’s results, not a standardized set covering every 14S configuration.
In practical use, the review found ordinary daily tasks and video streaming comfortable. That includes the type of workload most buyers associate with a general-purpose 14-inch laptop: multiple browser tabs, office applications, communication tools, and media playback. The article also describes video editing as very light.
The processor menu extends from a six-core Core Ultra 5 332 to a 16-core Core Ultra 9 386H. More cores can help with parallel workloads, but the review does not provide thermal measurements, sustained rendering times, graphics benchmarks, or results for the other processor options. Do not assume that an Ultra 9 configuration automatically turns the 14S into a workstation.
Likewise, the August 14, 2026 review does not establish gaming performance. There is no controlled frame-rate testing, graphics configuration detail, or evaluation of demanding modern games. The safe conclusion is that the review supports everyday productivity and light editing, not a recommendation for serious gaming or professional media production.

Battery life and charging
The 14S uses a reported three-cell 70 Wh battery and includes a 65 W AC adapter. In the reviewer’s continuous video-streaming test, a full charge lasted nine hours before reaching empty. Recharging from empty to full took about two hours.
That nine-hour figure is a single reviewer-run streaming observation, not a standardized laboratory benchmark or a guarantee for every configuration. Brightness, wireless conditions, browser activity, processor choice, OLED versus LCD display, background applications, and battery age can all change runtime. Office work with intermittent activity may last longer or shorter than continuous playback.
The charging result also describes one complete recharge under the reviewer’s setup. It should not be read as a universal two-hour charging promise. The supplied evidence does not establish USB-C charging behavior beyond the listed power-delivery capability of the Thunderbolt ports.
Aubernon advises avoiding routine full discharges. That is practical battery-care guidance reported in the review, but it was not independently validated here. Windows’ battery-health and power-mode controls are more useful than chasing a precise runtime number: use a balanced mode for mixed work, lower brightness when possible, and connect the adapter for sustained heavy tasks.
Ports and connectivity
The 14S has a strong modern port selection for a thin mainstream notebook:
- Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports with DisplayPort 2.1 and power delivery.
- One HDMI 2.1 output.
- Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports.
- One 3.5 mm headphone jack.
- Wi-Fi 7 wireless networking.
The omission is an SD card slot. Photographers, drone users, and video creators who move files from full-size SD cards will need a USB card reader or an adapter that matches the laptop’s available ports. The review identifies this as a practical inconvenience; it does not test or endorse a particular accessory.
For desk use, the two Thunderbolt 4 ports can simplify a dock, external display, or fast storage setup. HDMI 2.1 provides a direct display connection without a dongle. The combination of USB-A and USB-C also means older peripherals can remain connected while newer accessories use the faster standard.

How to choose the right 14S configuration
For school, office work, and general home use
Start with 16 GB of memory and at least 512 GB of storage. Choose the processor tier that keeps the total price reasonable, then decide whether the display upgrade is more valuable to you than additional storage. The tested Ultra 7 system demonstrates the level reviewed for everyday work, but the article does not show that every buyer needs that processor.

- POWERFUL INTEL CORE 7 PERFORMANCE – Handle everyday productivity, multitasking, streaming, and business applications with the Intel Core 7 150U processor featuring 10 cores, 12 threads, and speeds up to 5.4GHz, paired with integrated Intel Graphics for smooth daily computing.
- FAST MEMORY & STORAGE – Work efficiently with 16GB DDR5 memory for responsive multitasking and a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD that delivers fast boot times, quick application launches, and ample space for files, documents, and media.
- CRISP 14-INCH WUXGA DISPLAY – Enjoy sharp visuals and enhanced productivity on the 14.0-inch IPS display with 1920 x 1200 WUXGA resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio that provides more vertical screen space for work, browsing, and entertainment.
- MODERN CONNECTIVITY & COLLABORATION – Stay connected with WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, while the integrated webcam and microphone make video meetings easy. Windows 11 Pro provides a familiar, modern experience for work, school, and everyday use.
For multitasking and longer ownership
Move to 32 GB of LPDDR5x if you routinely keep many browser tabs, communication apps, virtual meetings, and large documents open together. Because laptop memory is commonly difficult or impossible to upgrade after purchase, capacity is a decision to make at checkout rather than later.
For local media libraries
Select 1 TB or 2 TB storage if you keep photos, downloaded video, project files, or games on the internal drive. The 512 GB tested drive is adequate for documents and streaming but can fill quickly once an operating system, applications, and media files share it.
For visual quality and touch
Choose the OLED touchscreen if contrast, film viewing, and touch interaction are priorities. Choose a non-OLED FHD+ panel if you want to control the price or do not need those features. Confirm brightness and resolution for the exact SKU rather than assuming the review unit’s panel is standard.
For travel
Compare the 3.4-pound measured weight with lighter alternatives before buying. The 0.61-inch thickness is travel-friendly, but a few ounces matter when the laptop is carried every day.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dell 14S versus the alternatives named in the review
The review places the 14S in the space between Dell’s Inspiron and XPS families and mentions the Dell 16S, Dell 14 Plus, Apple MacBook Air, HP OmniBook Ultra 14, and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Ultra Aura Edition as comparison points or alternatives. It does not provide a controlled head-to-head test, so these products should be evaluated using consistent criteria rather than a simple winner declaration.
| Comparison axis | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Use current prices for matching processor, memory, storage, and display configurations | A cheaper base model can become more expensive after necessary upgrades |
| Portability | Measured weight and thickness | The 14S weighs 3.4 pounds; some rivals are around three pounds or less according to the review |
| Screen | Resolution, OLED or other panel type, brightness, refresh rate, and touch support | The tested 14S panel is a 60 Hz, 300-nit, 1920×1200 OLED touchscreen, but other SKUs differ |
| Battery evidence | Workload and test method behind any runtime claim | Nine hours here comes from continuous video streaming by the reviewer |
| Connectivity | Thunderbolt, HDMI, USB-A, headphone, and card-reader availability | The 14S has useful ports but no SD slot |
| Workload | Everyday productivity versus gaming, rendering, or professional editing | The 14S review supports ordinary use and light editing, not demanding graphics claims |
These axes prevent a common mistake: comparing a premium display model against a low-cost base configuration and treating the price difference as a product verdict. Match the specifications first, then decide which design, operating system, port layout, and software ecosystem best fit your work.
What the Dell 14S does well
- Flexible configuration: buyers can select among several Core Ultra processors, two memory capacities, three storage capacities, and multiple FHD+ or QHD+ panels.
- Premium-feeling construction: the three-piece aluminum body and blue finishes give it a more refined character than a basic budget notebook.
- Useful modern I/O: Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, USB-A, a headphone jack, and Wi-Fi 7 cover most office and home setups.
- Strong display option: the tested OLED touchscreen adds contrast and touch capability, with Dolby Vision and ComfortView Plus listed in the review.
- Credible everyday battery result: nine hours of continuous streaming is a useful real-world observation, even though it is not a standardized benchmark.
- Comfortable general performance: the tested Core Ultra 7 system handled ordinary tasks, streaming, and very light editing according to the review.
Where the Dell 14S falls short
- Upgrades can become expensive: the reported range reaches $1,799, so the value depends heavily on the selected specification.
- No SD card slot: media-card users need a separate reader or adapter.
- Not exceptionally light: 3.4 pounds is portable but heavier than some roughly three-pound competitors mentioned by the reviewer.
- Mixed evidence for demanding work: the review does not establish gaming, professional rendering, or sustained heavy-editing capability.
- Configuration variability: display, processor, memory, and storage details change the experience; the tested OLED model should not be treated as representative of every 14S.
Who should buy the Dell 14S?
The 14S is a good fit if you want a mainstream 14-inch laptop with a metal chassis, a broad choice of specifications, current connectivity, and enough performance for office, school, communication, streaming, and occasional light editing. It is particularly appealing when you value an OLED touch option but do not want to move into a more specialized workstation category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt is less compelling for buyers whose first priorities are the lowest possible weight, a built-in SD reader, serious gaming, or professional creative workloads. Those buyers should compare alternatives using measured weight, graphics capability, card-reader availability, and workload-specific testing rather than relying on the 14S model name.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the exact processor model and core count.
- Choose 16 GB or 32 GB of LPDDR5x based on how long you expect to keep the laptop and how heavily you multitask.
- Pick 512 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB storage according to your local file collection, not just the initial price.
- Verify whether the screen is FHD+ or QHD+, OLED or another panel type, and whether it supports touch.
- Check the listed brightness and refresh rate for the specific configuration.
- Plan for a USB SD reader if you transfer files from SD cards.
- Compare the final configured price, not the starting price, with similarly equipped laptops.
- Review the seller’s current return, warranty, and delivery terms because the review’s August 2026 prices and availability are historical.
Bottom line
The Dell 14S is a sensible middle-ground laptop: more polished and configurable than a basic budget model, but not presented as a lightweight specialist or high-performance workstation. Its strongest case is everyday computing paired with a premium-feeling aluminum design, useful ports, optional OLED touch, and a reviewer-observed nine-hour streaming result. Buy it with the configuration—and the limitations—in view, especially the escalating upgrade cost, 3.4-pound weight, missing SD slot, and unproven suitability for demanding graphics work.
