Short answer: the 2026 Dell 14S DS14260 is a well-built, long-lasting 14-inch laptop with unusually useful ports, but it is not universally as powerful as an XPS 14. Performance depends on the exact processor, display, memory, and workload. The 14S is most convincing as a productivity and travel machine; buyers doing sustained video work or other demanding creative tasks should consider a higher Core Ultra X7 configuration or a genuinely faster class of laptop.

What the Dell 14S DS14260 is

The DS14260 is a family of 14-inch Dell laptops rather than one fixed specification. Dell’s United States product page lists systems with Intel Core Ultra 5 322 or Core Ultra 7 355 processors, 16 GB of memory, 512 GB of storage, and a choice of non-touch FHD+ or OLED touch screens. Notebookcheck documents a broader family that also includes a Core Ultra X7 358H option and additional panel combinations. Because processor and display choices vary by market, a review of one DS14260 should never be treated as a guarantee for every configuration.

The “as powerful as an XPS 14” question therefore needs a qualifier. Dell identifies the XPS model separately as DA14260 in its product brochure; it is not the same machine as the DS14260. A comparison is meaningful only when the processor, graphics configuration, screen, memory, cooling limits, and test workload are matched.

Dell’s current US listing is the best place to confirm what is actually orderable in that market: Dell 14S Laptop | Intel Processor | Dell USA. Dell describes the product with the marketing line “Performance that travels with you.” That is vendor copy, not an independent performance finding.

Performance: close to an XPS 14 only in the right workload

Notebookcheck’s tested Core Ultra 7 355 configuration delivered raw performance similar to the previous Dell 14 Plus with a Core Ultra 7 256V. That is respectable for office work, programming, web applications, photo organization, and other tasks that respond well to a modern efficient processor. It does not establish that every 14S equals every XPS 14, and it does not make the 14S a workstation-class system.

Tom’s Guide measured 2,704 in Geekbench single-core and 11,064 in Geekbench multi-core on its review unit. The same review unit completed its HandBrake video-editing test in 7 minutes 22 seconds. These are Tom’s Guide measurements for its particular configuration and test procedure, not performance guarantees for the Core Ultra 5 model, an OLED model, or a system sold in another region.

Test or comparison What was reported How to use the result
Notebookcheck processor assessment Core Ultra 7 355 performance was similar to the prior Dell 14 Plus Core Ultra 7 256V Useful context for everyday and mixed workloads; not a universal ranking against all XPS 14 versions.
Geekbench single-core 2,704 Tom’s Guide review-unit result; indicates responsive short, mostly serial tasks on that configuration.
Geekbench multi-core 11,064 Tom’s Guide review-unit result; sustained multi-threaded behavior varies with cooling and processor option.
HandBrake video encode 7:22 Tom’s Guide review-unit result; useful for comparison only when the other laptop uses the same test and settings.

The practical dividing line is sustained work. Document editing, dozens of browser tabs, conferencing, coding, and light creative applications should fit the 14S well. Long exports, repeated video transcodes, large software builds, and heavy 3D workloads keep the processor under load for much longer. Notebookcheck measured core temperatures around 90°C under load and recommends Core Ultra X7 configurations for buyers who need more performance. Tom’s Guide likewise advises stepping up for demanding creative work, particularly video editing.

Why the XPS comparison can mislead

An XPS 14 may use a different processor or graphics configuration, and benchmark leadership can change from one test to another. Tom’s Guide’s comparison table does not show the 14S and XPS 14 leading or matching each other uniformly across its listed benchmarks. A short single-core test, a long all-core render, and a GPU-accelerated export stress different parts of a laptop. The sensible conclusion is conditional: a well-specified 14S can feel as quick as an entry XPS 14 in many everyday tasks, while a higher-end XPS configuration can pull ahead in sustained or graphics-heavy work.

When comparing listings, record the exact CPU name rather than relying on “14S” or “XPS 14” alone. Also check whether the system has integrated graphics only, how much memory is installed, and whether the review used the same power mode. Without those details, a benchmark number is easy to overinterpret.

Display choices are the biggest buying decision

Notebookcheck lists five display possibilities across the DS14260 family. Two are 1920×1200 IPS panels at 60 Hz, differentiated by touch support. A 2560×1600 IPS panel runs at 120 Hz. The remaining two are 1920×1200 OLED panels at 60 Hz, again with touch and non-touch variants. Dell’s current US configurator does not necessarily expose every combination, so identify the panel in the order summary rather than assuming the family offers all five in your country.

Panel type Resolution and refresh Best fit Trade-offs reported
IPS, non-touch 1920×1200 at 60 Hz Office work, lower cost, and buyers who prefer a matte conventional screen Least spacious and least fluid option in the family.
IPS, touch 1920×1200 at 60 Hz Windows navigation, note-taking, and occasional direct manipulation Touch adds weight; resolution and refresh remain entry-level.
IPS high-resolution 2560×1600 at 120 Hz Sharper text, smoother scrolling, and general-purpose use where motion clarity matters Availability varies by market; higher resolution can increase graphics and battery demands.
OLED, non-touch 1920×1200 at 60 Hz Deep blacks and high perceived contrast for films and dark interfaces Notebookcheck found the OLED option relatively dim with poor HDR support.
OLED, touch 1920×1200 at 60 Hz Contrast-rich content plus direct input Shares the OLED brightness and HDR limitations; touch configuration is heavier.

Do not select OLED solely because the label sounds premium. Notebookcheck specifically found the panel relatively dim and its HDR support poor, so bright-room work and HDR movie viewing may favor the 120 Hz IPS option instead. Conversely, the IPS panel’s higher refresh rate does not make the 14S a gaming laptop; processor and integrated-graphics limits still determine frame rates.

For office use, 1920×1200 provides a useful 16:10 shape that shows more vertical content than a conventional 16:9 FHD screen. A 2560×1600 panel gives finer text and more workspace, but Windows scaling and application behavior can affect how much content actually fits. Touch is worthwhile only if you will use it; otherwise the non-touch configuration avoids its small weight penalty.

Battery life: a major strength with test-method limits

Notebookcheck recorded 19 hours 7 minutes in its Wi-Fi web-surfing test on its DS14260 review unit. Tom’s Guide also described battery performance as very strong after testing the laptop for a week. The 70 Wh battery and efficient Core Ultra platform explain why the 14S is attractive for travel, classes, and meetings.

That runtime is a publication measurement under a defined test method, not a promise that every owner will see a full workday plus a second day. Screen type, brightness, refresh rate, video calls, external displays, browser extensions, background synchronization, and power mode all change consumption. An OLED panel, a 120 Hz IPS panel, or a faster processor may produce a different result from the configuration Notebookcheck tested.

  • Use the manufacturer’s recommended or balanced power mode for normal work rather than maximum-performance mode.
  • Lower brightness before reducing performance settings; the display is often the largest user-controlled drain.
  • For travel, disable unused radios and close launchers or sync tools that remain active in the background.
  • Carry a compatible USB-C charger if you regularly work away from an outlet; Thunderbolt 4 ports make USB-C charging and docking practical, but confirm the charger’s wattage.

Build quality, portability, and ports

Both major reviews support the 14S’s physical design. Notebookcheck praised the more rigid metal body and the fact that the ports are integrated rather than relying on a thin adapter-only profile. Tom’s Guide described an aluminum chassis that feels more premium than a typical mid-range laptop and called the port selection generous.

The connector list is unusually useful for a 14-inch system: two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI 2.1, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, and a headset jack. That arrangement lets you connect a modern dock or high-speed storage while still plugging in older peripherals, a monitor, and wired headphones. Check the exact side layout in Dell’s manual if your desk setup depends on a particular port position.

Port abundance has a cost. Notebookcheck considers the 14S relatively heavy, and Dell’s listed weights put the touch version above the non-touch model. It remains portable, but buyers prioritizing the lightest possible 14-inch computer should compare measured weights rather than assuming every aluminum chassis is equally easy to carry.

Heat, acoustics, and privacy limitations

Notebookcheck observed core temperatures around 90°C under load. That figure reflects its test conditions and does not mean the laptop is unsafe; modern processors are designed to manage temperature. It does mean sustained performance can involve warm surfaces, fan noise, or clock-speed adjustment, especially in a thin chassis. Place the laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface during long exports and avoid blocking the intake on soft furniture.

The review also flags the absence of a webcam shutter. If you want a physical privacy barrier, use an external sliding cover designed for the camera bezel, a removable adhesive cover that does not obstruct sensors, or the operating system’s camera-permission controls. A software permission switch is useful but is not the same as a physical shutter.

These are not disqualifiers for ordinary productivity. They matter most to people who run long CPU workloads, record in warm rooms, or require a built-in camera cover for privacy policies.

How to choose the right DS14260 configuration

  1. Start with the workload. Choose the Core Ultra 5 version for documents, browsing, communication, and light editing when it is materially cheaper. Choose Core Ultra 7 for heavier multitasking. If your routine includes sustained video editing, repeated rendering, or other long all-core jobs, look for the Core Ultra X7 358H configuration documented by Notebookcheck or move to a different performance class.
  2. Choose the display by environment. Select the 120 Hz 2560×1600 IPS panel for sharper text and smoother scrolling when it is available. Select OLED for contrast-sensitive indoor viewing, but account for Notebookcheck’s brightness and HDR criticism. Select touch only when you have a clear touch workflow.
  3. Verify memory and storage. Dell’s listed configurations use 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage. That is a sensible baseline, but large media libraries, virtual machines, or local development environments can consume both quickly. Confirm whether the memory and SSD can be replaced before purchase if future expansion matters.
  4. Check the regional SKU. Write down the processor, panel resolution, panel type, touch status, operating-system edition, keyboard layout, and warranty shown at checkout. Family names do not guarantee identical selections in the United States, Australia, or other markets.
  5. Match the charger and accessories. If you will use a dock, external display, or bus-powered drive, confirm that the included charger and your dock provide appropriate USB-C power. The two Thunderbolt 4 ports are valuable, but the capability of a third-party dock still depends on its own specifications.
  6. Compare the complete price, not a headline discount. Include memory, display upgrades, shipping, tax, warranty length, and any required dock or charger. A lower base price can disappear once you add the panel and processor you actually need.

Price and availability: why one number is not universal

Dell’s US store showed one DS14260 offer at $1,379.99 when accessed on October 13, 2026. The site is dynamic, and another Dell product page showed a different amount, so that figure should be treated as a dated offer for one configuration rather than a universal DS14260 price. Promotions, selected processors, displays, and regional taxes can change the total.

Notebookcheck’s review and Tom’s Guide’s review are useful for performance context, but neither establishes a current selling price in every country. CHOICE’s listing is Australian and reports pricing in Australian dollars; it should not be converted into a US value or compared directly with Dell’s US offer. Before using any retailer link, verify that it names DS14260 and shows the same CPU and display combination discussed in the review.

Who should buy the Dell 14S DS14260?

Good fit

  • Students and mobile professionals who value long unplugged use and a rigid metal chassis.
  • Office users who need HDMI, USB-A, Thunderbolt 4, and a headset jack without carrying a hub.
  • Buyers who want a 14-inch 16:10 screen and can choose the panel that suits their room and workflow.
  • People whose demanding tasks are occasional rather than continuous.

Consider another configuration or laptop

  • Video editors, 3D creators, and developers who run long, sustained compiles or renders should investigate the Core Ultra X7 option or a higher-performance system.
  • Users who require strong HDR should not assume the OLED model delivers it; Notebookcheck reported poor HDR support.
  • Frequent travelers who prioritize minimum carry weight should compare the listed touch and non-touch weights with competing 14-inch models.
  • Anyone requiring a built-in webcam shutter should plan an external solution or choose a laptop that includes one.

Alternatives and how to compare them fairly

Notebookcheck names the Asus VivoBook S 14, HP OmniBook 7, and Lenovo IdeaPad Slim models as possible alternatives, but the available evidence does not provide matched current prices and test results for ranking them against the DS14260. Treat them as candidates for a shopping shortlist, not as proven winners.

Use the same comparison worksheet for every candidate:

  • Exact processor and graphics configuration, followed by results from the same benchmark or application.
  • Display resolution, panel technology, brightness, refresh rate, touch support, and HDR behavior.
  • Battery test method, screen setting, wireless conditions, and the review unit’s processor.
  • Measured weight, chassis material, port selection, and webcam privacy features.
  • Price for the exact regional SKU, including upgrades and warranty.

For the XPS line specifically, Dell’s brochure identifies the XPS 14 as model DA14260: XPS Laptops reviewer’s guide. Keeping DA14260 and DS14260 separate prevents a common specification mistake.

Final verdict

The Dell 14S DS14260 earns its mid-range position through a sturdy aluminum design, a genuinely useful set of ports, and excellent reported battery endurance. Those strengths make it a compelling everyday and travel laptop. Its claim to XPS-level power is conditional: the Core Ultra 7 355 can be competitive in ordinary work, but benchmark leadership changes by workload, and sustained creative tasks expose the limits of the thinner chassis and lower configurations.

Buy it when the exact SKU has the processor and panel you need, the price fits your market, and portability plus battery life matter more than maximum sustained performance. Skip the base configuration for heavy production work, and do not choose OLED or touch without checking the brightness, HDR, weight, and availability trade-offs attached to that specific listing.
