Checkout is where a delivery app must make the cart, payment, store, and delivery details agree at the same time. That makes it a particularly exposed point of failure—not proof that checkout fails more often than every other app flow. The available documentation explains the main ways checkout can break and how better validation and error handling can help.
Why checkout has so many dependencies
A delivery order is not complete when a customer taps Place Order. The app must submit a valid cart, obtain payment approval, and connect the order to the systems that handle fulfillment. DoorDash described its consumer checkout service as coordinating cart submission, payment processing, and logistics; its account of a 2021 redesign shows how much work can sit behind one customer action. DoorDash Engineering’s checkout-service account is a historical description of that system, not a universal architecture recipe.
By contrast, browsing a menu or viewing an order may not require those same services to agree in one transaction. Checkout also happens after the customer has made choices that can become stale: inventory changes, a store reaches capacity, or a price is updated. The combination makes checkout structurally vulnerable. The available sources do not provide an industry-wide failure-rate comparison showing that checkout breaks more than search, tracking, or other delivery-app flows.
What can cause a delivery checkout to fail?
Cart contents or prices have changed
An item may have gone out of stock after it was added. A modifier can be invalid or incomplete, or the merchant and platform may no longer agree on an item price or subtotal. DoorDash’s Order Cart Validation documentation describes these as conditions that can prevent an order from being accepted. The useful response is to identify the affected item or discrepancy and let the customer correct the cart before submission.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The store cannot accept the order
A store may be closed, offline, or at capacity. These are not necessarily problems with the customer’s device or payment card; the merchant may simply be unable to fulfill another order at that moment. An app should explain the store’s state and, where appropriate, let the customer try again later.
The delivery address is ineligible
Checkout can fail when no delivery option is available for the chosen destination. Shopify’s general commerce documentation lists undeliverable addresses among checkout errors; it illustrates an error category, not a claim about a particular food-delivery app’s implementation. See Shopify’s checkout error documentation. A useful message tells the customer whether to try another address or change the order for the current delivery context.

Payment is declined or cannot be verified
A payment error may come from a bank, payment provider, or store-side configuration. Missing approval notifications and failed verification can interrupt payment even when the customer believes the details are correct. Shopify’s payment troubleshooting guidance discusses these general payment failure categories. The app should say what happened clearly and offer a suitable next step, such as checking the payment method or choosing another one.

A dependent service is unhealthy
Checkout depends on services communicating reliably. If one becomes slow or unavailable, repeated requests can add load instead of helping recovery. In DoorDash’s account of a June 2021 outage, the company identified missing defensive measures, including load shedding and circuit breaking, as part of the problem. The incident is a specific example, not evidence that every delivery app has the same failure mode. DoorDash’s outage analysis explains how service degradation affected order fulfillment.

How cart validation can prevent avoidable cancellations
Validation checks whether the order is still acceptable before it is submitted. In DoorDash’s documented flow, validation begins as the customer moves from the cart toward checkout. If it succeeds, Place Order can proceed; if it fails, the customer sees an error and must address it. This gives the customer a chance to remove an unavailable item, fix a modifier, or respond to a price change rather than discovering the problem after submission.
DoorDash says that if validation has not returned by the time a customer tries to place the order, the order is submitted without waiting for it. Its documentation also notes that excessive timeouts may result in validation being disabled for affected stores. This is an important trade-off: validation can catch stale data, but it must respond quickly and be monitored so that the safeguard itself does not block checkout.

DoorDash reports results from a case study with a top integration partner: a 62.9% relative reduction in POS-driven cancellations, an 11.5% relative reduction in orders with defects, and eventual conversion of 47% of carts that failed validation after customers corrected them. These are partner-specific case-study figures reported in DoorDash’s documentation, not independently verified industry averages. DoorDash summarizes the purpose of the feature this way: “OCV prevents these avoidable cancellations.”
What a better checkout failure looks like
A robust checkout does more than display a generic failure notice. It distinguishes between a correctable cart problem, an unavailable store, an ineligible delivery address, a payment issue, and a wider service outage. The customer should be able to tell whether to edit an item, change an address, select another payment method, or wait and retry.

- Check data before submission: Revalidate inventory, modifiers, prices, store availability, and delivery eligibility close to the point of purchase.
- Make errors actionable: Identify what needs to change and offer the next step, rather than forcing the customer to guess whether the payment, cart, or store caused the failure.
- Protect downstream services: Set retry behavior alongside safeguards such as circuit breaking and load shedding so retries do not intensify an unhealthy dependency.
- Monitor validation latency and timeouts: A check that arrives too late may be bypassed, while persistent timeouts can lead to the feature being disabled for affected stores.
DoorDash’s historical checkout redesign also describes clearer error messages that let customers take specific actions, such as switching a declined card or removing an unavailable item. The central design goal is to turn a failed order into a correctable decision whenever possible, without hiding a service outage or repeatedly submitting an order that cannot be processed.
