The Delhi High Court has issued an interim order protecting Kangana Ranaut’s personality rights and directing Meta to remove specified content, including identified AI-generated deepfakes. The order does not impose a blanket ban on satire or every AI depiction of a public figure: it concerns material identified in the case, and Meta’s 72-hour deadline starts when the order is communicated to it.
What the Delhi High Court ordered
In Kangana Ranaut v. Meta Platforms Inc. & Ors., CS(COMM) 1100/2026, Justice Vikas Mahajan issued an interim order dated 8 October 2026. It restrains the defendants, including unidentified “John Does,” from unauthorized exploitation of Ranaut’s name, image, likeness, voice, speeches, signature, persona and other personality attributes.
The order separately restrains the creation or dissemination of specified AI-generated content, deepfakes, synthetic media, manipulated videos and audio, fabricated speeches, false endorsements and impersonation content depicting or purporting to depict Ranaut. It also covers digital assets falsely suggesting an association, affiliation, endorsement or authorization. The court described the identified material as supporting a prima facie strong case and found that the balance of convenience favored Ranaut, with potential harm that might not be adequately compensated in money. These are interim findings, not a final decision on all claims.

What Meta must take down, and when
Meta was directed to remove, disable access to and permanently take down the content identified in Annexure A and Document K. The 72-hour period runs from when Ranaut communicates the order to Meta—not automatically from the order’s 8 October date. The order also requires compliance affidavits within two weeks.

Separately, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) were directed to issue necessary directions to internet service providers and telecom service providers to block or remove access to the listed infringing websites. Their 72-hour period likewise begins after communication of the order.
Why the court addressed deepfakes
Ranaut’s suit materials, as summarized in the order, alleged fabricated statements, manipulated videos, AI-generated content, morphed images, false quotes and identity misuse. They described material that falsely portrayed her in situations or activities that had not occurred; those descriptions are allegations in the case, not findings that every item was independently proven.

The order specifically discusses AI-generated or morphed sexual and explicit deepfakes, as well as deceptive manipulated audio-visual content. Justice Mahajan wrote, “This further includes protection to the plaintiff against such instances of the impugned content, involving AI-generated/morphed, sexual, and explicit deepfakes.” The order also says of the deceptive content under discussion: “Such content is inherently deceptive and is capable of misleading ordinary viewers into believing the same to be genuine.”

Does the order ban memes or satire?
No blanket ban on memes or satire appears in the order. It records that a satirical meme submitted with the plaint was not included in Annexure A because Ranaut was not pressing for its removal at that time. The order also allows a website or account that is not primarily infringing to approach the court with an undertaking that it does not intend to infringe her personality rights; the court may then consider modifying the injunction.
Can additional accounts or URLs be addressed?
Yes. The order permits Ranaut to notify the defendants about additional infringing URLs, accounts, channels or content discovered later, for removal or access disabling without starting a fresh proceeding. That provision does not turn the interim order into a final ruling on the legality of material not yet considered by the court.

What the ruling does—and does not—settle
This is an interim order pending further proceedings, not a final adjudication of every claim or a universal rule for synthetic depictions of public figures. Its operative directions are tied to the named defendants, the identified content and the terms set out by the court.
