Deleting vs deactivating Twitter: what’s the difference? On X (formerly Twitter), deactivation is the first step toward deletion—not a separate permanent-removal option. Deactivation hides your profile and starts a 30-day window in which you can restore the account by logging in. If you do not log in during that period, X says the account is deleted and cannot be reactivated as the same account. See X’s deactivation guidance and reactivation instructions (current policy checked October 7, 2026).

Deactivation vs. deletion at a glance

What you want to know During the 30-day deactivation period After deletion completes
Can you get the account back? Generally yes. Sign in within 30 days and confirm reactivation. No. X says the previous account cannot be reactivated after the period.
Can people view your profile? No. X says the username and public profile are not viewable on X. The old account is no longer available through X; its posts are not accessible from that account.
What happens to sent direct messages? They are not deleted during the deactivation period. X says they are deleted when account deletion completes.
What happens to subscriptions? Subscriptions bought through a mobile app may remain active; manage them through the platform where you purchased them. X says subscriptions bought on X.com automatically cancel upon deactivation. Follow the purchase-channel rules; do not assume that deactivation cancels an app-purchased subscription.
Can you reuse your username, email, or phone number? Generally not during the 30-day period. X says a username and email become available 30 days after deactivation, subject to account and platform conditions. A phone number may also remain unavailable for 30 days unless removed in account settings before deactivation.

These are X’s stated policies; availability can depend on account and platform conditions. See its deactivation details and identifier guidance.

What deactivation changes—and what it does not

Your profile and account data

Deactivation makes your username and public profile unavailable on X, but it does not immediately erase all account information from X’s systems. X says the account can be restored for up to 30 days; after that, associated information is no longer available in X Production Tools. X may retain some information for platform safety and security. Its guidance describes deactivation as the first step to deleting an account permanently.

Posts, mentions, and search results

Once the account is unavailable, old posts cannot be accessed through that account. However, deactivation does not guarantee that every reference to you disappears. Mentions in other people’s posts may remain, though they no longer link to an available profile. Search engine listings are outside X’s control, so deactivating or deleting your account does not itself remove results from Google, Bing, or other search engines.

Direct messages

Sent direct messages remain during the 30-day deactivation period. X says they are deleted when account deletion completes. Do not deactivate on the assumption that your messages vanish immediately.

Before you deactivate: protect your data and subscriptions

Request an account archive

If you want a copy of your information, request your X data archive before deactivating. X’s archive is available in HTML and JSON formats. Follow the steps in X’s account-data download guide, and wait until you have access to the archive you need before proceeding.

Check how you pay for subscriptions

The cancellation outcome depends on where you bought the subscription. X says subscriptions purchased through its mobile app remain active after deactivation and must be managed through the original platform. Subscriptions purchased on X.com automatically cancel upon deactivation. Check the purchase route rather than assuming that removing your profile ends every recurring payment.

Plan for usernames and contact details

If your goal is to use the same username or email on another account, X says they are unavailable for 30 days after deactivation. A phone number may also remain unavailable for 30 days unless you remove it in account settings first. If you only want to change a username or email, deactivation is not necessary: X says these details can be changed in account information.

How to deactivate without accidentally restoring the account

  1. Save what you need. Request and retrieve your archive before deactivation if you want a copy of your data.
  2. Review subscriptions and identifiers. Check whether a subscription was purchased in the app or on X.com, and decide whether to remove a phone number or change account information before deactivation.
  3. Deactivate from X. Use the account-deactivation process described in X’s official instructions.
  4. Keep track of the date. The 30-day period is X’s current policy, not a measured statistic. If you intend to return, sign in before it ends. If your aim is permanent deletion, avoid logging in during the period.
  5. Prevent indirect logins. X warns that third-party app access can cause logins that reactivate the account. Revoke connected app access if the account keeps reactivating, and avoid using services that sign in with the account.

When to choose a break, deletion, or another fix

  • Choose deactivation if you want your profile hidden temporarily and may want the account back. Sign in within 30 days to reactivate.
  • Let the 30 days pass without logging in if you want deletion and have saved any data or handled subscriptions and identifiers. X says the old account cannot be restored after deletion completes.
  • Change account information instead if you only need a new username or email. Deactivation is not required for that.
  • Use troubleshooting or contact support if you are trying to fix missing posts, suspicious messages, incorrect counts, or a suspected compromise. X says deactivating and reactivating will not resolve those underlying problems.

How to reactivate during the 30-day window

  1. Sign in at x.com or in the X app with the account credentials.
  2. Confirm the reactivation prompt.
  3. Allow time for posts, followers, likes, and other account elements to return. X says count restoration may take up to 24 hours; if counts are still wrong after 48 hours, its guidance is to contact support.

If more than 30 days have passed, X says the previous account cannot be reactivated. Read its reactivation instructions and reactivation troubleshooting guidance for account-specific help.
