Start with Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage (macOS Ventura 13 or later). Review the recommendations and categories there before deleting anything. macOS already removes many safe caches and logs when it needs room, so manually deleting unfamiliar files can create problems without producing lasting free space.
For older macOS versions, open Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Use Safe Mode only when you urgently need temporary working space, and look for large personal files in Finder when the storage problem is really downloads, videos, backups, applications, or items waiting in the Trash.
What “temporary files” means on a Mac
Temporary files are data created while macOS or an app performs work. They can include cache data used to reopen websites quickly, logs that record system or application events, incomplete downloads, temporary databases, update packages waiting to be installed, and files created during normal app operation. Some are disposable; others are still being used and should remain in place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSafari website data, for example, may be recreated the next time you visit a site. An interrupted download may be useless, but a file that merely looks unfamiliar in a system folder could be required by macOS or an app. The useful distinction is not “old file versus new file.” It is system-managed data that macOS can safely recreate versus personal data you can identify and choose to delete or move.

Apple says macOS clears caches and logs that are safe to delete when space is needed. Its examples include temporary database files, interrupted downloads, staged macOS and app updates, Safari website data, and similar items. That automatic cleanup is why a very large manual cache purge is usually unnecessary.
Check storage before deleting anything
Storage categories show where the space is going. Check the version of macOS first, because Apple uses different names for the storage screen.
macOS Ventura 13 or later
- Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Select System Settings.
- Choose General in the sidebar.
- Select Storage.
- Wait for the categories and recommendations to finish calculating.
Do not judge the result while the calculation is still in progress. The totals can change as macOS indexes applications, local files, and system-managed data.

- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Select the Storage tab.
The labels and layout differ by release, but the purpose is the same: identify whether the pressure comes from removable personal content or from a system category that macOS manages.
Use Storage recommendations as the first cleanup method
Apple’s Storage view provides recommendations and controls for supported categories. Read each recommendation, inspect what it selects, and approve only items you recognize as unnecessary.
Review large personal files
Large videos, disk images, exported projects, old installers, and duplicate downloads often recover more space than cache deletion. Open the relevant category and sort or inspect the listed items where macOS provides that option. Keep anything you still need, and move valuable files to another storage device before removing them from the Mac.
Check Downloads and other easy-to-identify folders
The Downloads folder commonly contains installers, archives, documents, and media that were downloaded once and forgotten. Open it in Finder, check the file names and dates, and delete only files that can be downloaded again or are otherwise backed up. Apply the same approach to movies, music, pictures, and documents: identify the owner and purpose before removing the item.

Review applications
Removing an application can free its application bundle, but it may not remove every document, library, or project created by that app. Confirm that you no longer need the application and that important files are stored elsewhere. If an app has its own uninstall procedure, use it rather than dragging unknown support folders out of the system.
Inspect iPhone, iPad, and other backups
Local device backups can be large and may remain long after a device has been replaced. Keep at least one backup you genuinely need, verify that a newer copy exists before deleting an older one, and use Apple’s storage controls or the app that created the backup when available.
Empty the Trash
Dragging a file to the Trash does not immediately return its disk space to macOS. The item remains on the drive until you empty the Trash. Open the Trash, inspect its contents, and choose Empty Trash only after confirming that nothing there is needed. This is an irreversible step unless another backup exists.
Why “System Data” can look unexpectedly large
System Data is a broad category, not a single temporary-files folder. Apple says it can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, runtime resources, temporary files, fonts, application-support files, and plug-ins. The amount varies with the Mac’s current state: active apps, updates, swap usage, connected devices, and other processes can all affect the total.
macOS manages this category. Apple does not provide a general “delete everything in System Data” control, and the Storage category itself does not let you manage every item inside it. A large number therefore does not prove that a cache purge is needed.
If System Data is high, manage the personal data that you can identify through Finder and the applications that created it. Look for large downloads, media libraries, old device backups, virtual machines, project exports, and application data that you understand. Do not remove unfamiliar files from system directories merely because their names contain words such as cache, log, or support.
When Safe Mode can help
Safe Mode is a limited, temporary storage measure. Apple says that starting a Mac in Safe Mode clears certain system caches; those caches are created again automatically as needed. This can provide enough working room for a task such as installing a macOS update, but it is not a promise of a permanent amount of recovered space.

The procedure for entering Safe Mode differs between Apple silicon Macs and Intel-based Macs. Use the startup method appropriate to your model and macOS release, then allow the Mac to finish starting before checking Storage again. Safe Mode may make the next startup slower while caches are rebuilt. Return to a normal startup for ordinary use.

Temporary cleanup versus personal-file cleanup
These approaches solve different problems. Use the following decision guide instead of treating every large number as a cache problem.
| Approach | Best target | Type of result | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage recommendations | Categories and personal files macOS identifies as removable | Usually lasting space when selected items are deleted | Read the item list and keep anything needed |
| Safe Mode | Certain system caches | Temporary working room; caches can return | Use the correct startup method for the Mac |
| Finder cleanup | Downloads, media, projects, installers, and other known files | Lasting space if the files are deleted | Confirm backup, ownership, and re-downloadability |
| Move to another storage device | Large files you want to keep | Lasting space on the Mac without deleting the files | Check destination capacity and open a copied file before removing the original |
The deciding questions are simple: Is the target a system cache or a personal file? Do you need temporary room for one operation or lasting capacity? Can the item be downloaded again? If you are moving it, does the destination have enough capacity and a reliable backup plan?
Move large files instead of deleting them
Apple recommends moving files to another storage device as a way to free space. An external SSD can be useful for video libraries, photo archives, project folders, virtual machines, and other large files that you want to retain. This is optional; it is not required for temporary-file cleanup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Connect the external drive and confirm that it appears in Finder.
- Check the drive’s available capacity.
- Create a clearly named folder for the files you are moving.
- Copy the files rather than immediately deleting the originals.
- Open representative files from the external drive to verify that the copy works.
- After verification, remove the original files from the Mac and empty the Trash.
Keep the external drive connected whenever an application expects those files at their original location, or update the application’s library location according to its own instructions. A moved photo or video library is not useful if the app can no longer find it.
A careful, repeatable cleanup procedure
Step 1: Record the starting state
Open Storage and note which category is consuming space. If the figure changes substantially during the day, wait for indexing or an update to finish before drawing conclusions. A changing total may reflect active system work rather than disposable files.

Step 2: Apply the least risky recommendation
Start with files you can name and recognize: old downloads, duplicate exports, unused installers, watched videos, or backups that you have independently verified. Leave system-managed categories alone unless macOS presents a specific supported action.
Step 3: Inspect the source application
When a category belongs to an app, check that app for its own storage controls. Media editors, mail clients, browsers, and backup tools may retain libraries or archives that Finder cannot safely interpret. Deleting a support file by hand can damage the library while leaving the visible app installed.
Step 4: Empty the Trash only after verification
Trash is a holding area, not free space. Review it after each cleanup batch, then empty it when you are certain that the files are expendable or safely copied elsewhere.
Step 5: Recheck Storage
Return to the Storage screen and allow it to recalculate. The total may not update instantly, and System Data can fluctuate as macOS creates or removes working files. Compare the category that originally caused concern rather than expecting every number to fall by the exact size of the deleted files.
What not to delete manually
- Unfamiliar files in system folders: their names may not reveal whether macOS or an app is using them.
- Application-support folders: these can contain libraries, preferences, licenses, databases, and user content.
- Virtual-memory files: macOS uses them while memory is under pressure; removing them does not solve the underlying workload.
- Fonts and plug-ins: deleting one can break documents, applications, or workflows that depend on it.
- Active update files: an update staged by macOS may be needed for installation or recovery.
- Backup data without verification: a backup is valuable only if another usable copy exists.
A filename containing “cache” is not permission to delete it. If the item is not listed by a supported Storage control and you cannot identify the app that owns it, leave it in place.

“I need a few gigabytes to install an update.”
First review Storage recommendations and remove or move a known large personal file. If the remaining shortage appears to be system-managed, Safe Mode may clear certain recreatable caches and provide temporary room. Restart normally after the update or other urgent operation.

“I deleted files, but the free-space number did not change.”
Confirm that the files were not left in the Trash. Then wait for Storage to recalculate. If the deleted items belonged to a library or app, the app may still retain a separate database, cache, or duplicate copy.
“The Mac is slow after cleanup.”
Some caches are recreated automatically, so an app or website may work more slowly on its first launch afterward. If the slowdown persists, stop deleting files and investigate the specific app or process instead of removing more system data.
“I want to keep the files but need space now.”
Move large personal files to a suitably sized external storage device, verify the copies, and then remove the originals and empty the Trash. Keep a backup if the files are important.

How often should you clean temporary files?
There is no Apple-backed schedule or guaranteed amount of space that a manual temporary-file cleanup will recover. macOS already clears safe caches and logs when needed, and caches are recreated as applications run. Use Storage when you receive a low-space warning, before a large update, or when you have identified a specific category that is growing.
A short monthly review of Downloads, large media, old installers, device backups, and the Trash is more predictable than repeatedly deleting system caches. It also targets files that remain large after macOS has completed its own maintenance.
Bottom line
Use Apple’s Storage screen first, remove only personal files you can identify, and let macOS manage System Data and safe caches. Safe Mode is a temporary option for urgent space pressure, not a permanent cleaning strategy. When the largest files are valuable, move them to another storage device, verify the copies, and then empty the Trash to reclaim the space.
