For routine cleanup, select a file in File Explorer and press Delete; when Windows places it in the Recycle Bin, you can restore it from there. Choose another method when you need to empty the bin, automate selected cleanup, try to recover an accidental deletion, or prepare the whole PC for someone else. The key difference is scope: deleting a selected item is not the same as clearing the Recycle Bin or resetting a device.
Choose a deletion method by your goal
| Method | Best for | What to know | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| File Explorer Delete | Removing selected files during normal use | Items may be restorable from the Recycle Bin when that behavior applies. | Selected files or folders |
| Empty Recycle Bin | Clearing items already in the bin and reclaiming space | Removes the usual restore path; it is not a promise of secure erasure. | Recycle Bin contents |
| Shift+Delete | Bypassing the Recycle Bin for selected items | Treat as difficult to undo. The cited Microsoft guidance is legacy and does not verify every current Windows 11 prompt or exception. | Selected files or folders |
| Storage Sense | Automating selected storage cleanup | Review configured thresholds and options; Downloads and cloud content are not cleaned by default unless configured. | System drive and signed-in user’s settings |
| Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup | Reviewing categories before cleanup | Inspect each category and selection before confirming. | Suggested or selected categories |
| Windows File Recovery | Attempting recovery after accidental deletion | Recovery is not guaranteed; further device use can overwrite data. | Supported local drives |
| Reset this PC > Remove everything > Clean data | Preparing a PC for handoff | Makes recovery harder but does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards. | Whole-device reset workflow |
Delete selected files in File Explorer
Open File Explorer, navigate to the file or folder, select it, then press Delete or choose the Delete command in the toolbar. For local hard-disk files, Microsoft describes ordinary deletion as moving items to the Recycle Bin. Its guidance also notes that deletion from some other locations, such as a disk, CD, or network location, can destroy items directly; behavior can vary, so do not assume every location offers the same restore path. Microsoft’s file-deletion guidance is written for Microsoft 365 apps, not as a complete Windows 11 location matrix.
If File Explorer moves the item to the Recycle Bin, you can open the bin, select the item, and choose Restore to return it. Check the bin before emptying it if you may need anything in it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Empty the Recycle Bin to clear its normal restore path
When you are sure you no longer need items in the Recycle Bin, right-click the Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin, then confirm if prompted. This removes those items from the ordinary restore route and can free storage space. It does not establish that the underlying data has been securely overwritten. Microsoft’s Windows free-space guidance recommends emptying the bin as a way to remove deleted files from the device and free space.

Use Shift+Delete only when bypassing the bin is intentional
Select the files or folders and press Shift+Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin, according to Microsoft’s support guidance. Consider this hard to undo: the cited article says items deleted this way cannot be undeleted, but it is legacy guidance whose introduction refers to Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95, so it does not establish every current Windows 11 prompt or exception. If you are uncertain, use ordinary Delete and review the Recycle Bin instead. Read Microsoft’s bypass guidance.
Automate selected cleanup with Storage Sense
Open Settings > System > Storage and select Storage Sense. Review its settings before enabling or changing automated cleanup. Microsoft says that, under default settings, Storage Sense can run when the device is low on space and clean unnecessary temporary files; Recycle Bin contents may be removed after the period you configure. Downloads and cloud content are not cleaned unless you configure those options. Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions say it works on the system drive, usually C:, and applies only to the signed-in user.

Review Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup before confirming
Cleanup recommendations
Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations to review suggested categories. Microsoft lists temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps among possible recommendations. The interface shows estimated space savings before cleanup. Inspect what is included—especially Downloads and previous Windows installations—rather than selecting every category reflexively. Options can vary with the device and its contents. See Microsoft’s free-space instructions.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
Disk Cleanup
Search Windows for Disk Cleanup, choose a drive, and review the file-type checkboxes and descriptions before confirming. Selecting Clean up system files can show additional system-file categories. Some categories may already be selected, so check the selections and descriptions rather than assuming the tool will remove only disposable files. Microsoft’s Disk Cleanup steps describe this review process.
Try recovery promptly after an accidental deletion
First check the Recycle Bin and restore the file if it is there. If it is not, minimize use of the affected device: writing new data can overwrite space that held the deleted file. Microsoft advises, “If you want to increase your chances of recovering a file, minimize or avoid using your computer.”

Windows File Recovery is Microsoft’s command-line app for attempting recovery from local internal drives, external drives, and USB devices when the file cannot be restored from the Recycle Bin. Cloud storage and network shares are unsupported. Recovery is not assured; the result depends on the drive and whether the data has been overwritten.
The general command structure is winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/mode] [/switches]. Microsoft documents Regular and Extensive modes and requires the source and destination to be different drives. Follow the tool’s current instructions for choosing a mode and switches; do not save recovered files to the source drive.

Prepare a PC for a new owner with Reset this PC
For selling, donating, or recycling a whole computer, deleting files one by one is not the same as clearing the device. Microsoft’s consumer guidance is to use Reset this PC > Remove everything, with the optional Clean data setting. The reset removes personal files, apps, and settings and makes removed files harder for others to recover. Microsoft explicitly cautions that “The data erasure functionality is targeted at consumers and does not meet government and industry data erasure standards.” It should not be represented as standards-grade or guaranteed secure erasure. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance.
Keep files while freeing local space
If your actual goal is to reclaim space without losing personal files, move infrequently used files to external storage rather than deleting them. Microsoft lists an external drive, USB drive, or SD card as options in its free-space recommendations. Confirm the copy opens from the destination before removing the local copy.
