There is no single expiration date for a deleted text. On iPhone, Apple says a deleted message can be recovered from Recently Deleted for up to 30 days, unless it is permanently deleted sooner. Beyond that folder, the message may still exist in a backup, on another device, in the recipient’s conversation, or in a provider’s systems. Each is a separate copy with its own rules.
How long can deleted text messages last?
It depends on which copy you mean. “Deleted” may mean removed from the conversation list, placed in a recovery folder, removed from a synced device, or permanently deleted from one device’s ordinary interface. None of those actions automatically establishes that every copy has been erased.

How long can I recover deleted texts on iPhone?
Apple’s iPhone guide says deleted texts can be recovered from Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. This is a recovery window in the Messages app, not a promise that all other copies are erased at day 30. If you choose permanent deletion from Recently Deleted, that can happen before the window ends.

- Open Messages and go to the conversation list.
- Tap Filters, or the conversation-list filter control, then tap Recently Deleted.
- Select the messages or conversations you want and choose Recover.
Apple’s instructions are in its iPhone message recovery guide. If Messages in iCloud is enabled, message deletion and recovery sync among the owner’s participating Apple devices, so check other devices signed in to the same Apple Account as well.

Does deleting a text remove it from the other person’s phone?
No. Deleting a message from your own device does not normally erase the recipient’s copy. Apple explicitly states that deleting text messages, attachments, or conversations from an iPhone does not affect what recipients see. Messages in iCloud syncs the owner’s messages across that owner’s participating Apple devices; it does not reach into another person’s phone.
Can backups keep deleted messages?
iPhone and iCloud
Apple says SMS, MMS, RCS, Apple Messages for Business, and iMessages are backed up in iCloud when either iCloud Backup or Messages in iCloud is enabled. A backup is a distinct copy path from the Messages app’s Recently Deleted folder. Apple’s Messages & Privacy disclosure describes these backup conditions.

Android and Google backup
Google says Android device backup can include SMS and MMS, and can include RCS when Google Messages is used. Backup and restore availability depends on device, Android version, and app support; Google warns that not every app backs up or restores all data. Its documentation does not promise a set number of days that a deleted message remains recoverable. See Google’s Android backup guidance.

A backup may be useful only if the relevant message was included in a backup available to restore. Do not assume that restoring a backup will recover a message permanently deleted from every available copy; Google’s guidance does not guarantee that outcome.

Do SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage have different retention rules?
Yes, because they can travel through different services. Apple says SMS sending and receiving are provided by the carrier, not Apple. Google says SMS and MMS delivery is through the carrier, while RCS may be provided by a carrier or, in some cases, Google. For RCS sent through Google’s infrastructure, Google says messages are temporarily queued and deleted after delivery. That statement concerns delivery handling, not a disclosed retention period for a delivered message or the recipient’s copy.
Google also says certain RCS connection information, such as a phone number, device identifiers, and SIM card number, may be stored for about a month to maintain connectivity and accommodate temporary offline periods. That is connection metadata, not a stated one-month storage period for message content. More broadly, Google’s general policy describes deletion from its storage systems as generally taking around two months, with encrypted backup storage potentially retained for up to six months; it does not identify those periods as text-message-content retention rules. Can permanently deleted text messages be recovered?
Sometimes a separate copy may remain in a backup, on another synced device, or on the recipient’s phone. But there is no universal recovery timeframe or guarantee once a message has been permanently deleted from the available recovery area. The cited Apple and Google guidance does not establish a reliable method or success rate for restoring permanently deleted texts across devices, backups, and providers.

- On Android, verify whether device backup was enabled and whether it covered the message type and app in question.
- If the message was delivered, remember the recipient may still have their copy.
- Do not assume a carrier can provide message content or that recovery software can restore it; the available provider documentation does not establish either as a dependable option.
What not to confuse with message lifespan
Apple’s Undo Send feature can retract an eligible accidentally sent message within two minutes, but it is a sending feature, not a way to delete a previously delivered text from every device. Likewise, Google’s statement that an Android device backup can take up to 24 hours describes backup completion time, not how long messages are retained. Google’s no-charge 15 GB Google Account backup allowance describes storage capacity, not message lifetime.
