If you deleted iPhone data, check Apple’s Recently Deleted folders and any available backups before paying for recovery software. A third-party tool may help you retrieve data from an accessible backup or attempt a device scan, but no product can guarantee recovery—especially when no usable copy of the data remains.
Start with Apple’s recovery options
- Check the relevant app’s Recently Deleted folder. For photos, messages, notes, and other content, first check whether the app still has a built-in recovery location. Availability and retention depend on the app and item.
- Look for an existing backup. Check whether you have an iCloud backup or a backup made to a Mac or PC. Apple explains how to restore an iPhone from a backup at Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup. Restoring a backup is different from selectively extracting one file, and may replace current device data.
- Only then consider third-party software. Choose a product based on where the data might still exist—on the device, in a computer backup, or in another accessible source—not on a general promise to recover deleted files.
Recovery is uncertain. A tool can only work with data it can still access; published guidance does not establish that software can restore every permanently deleted file. See Apple’s backup restoration guidance and the recovery limitations discussed by MacObserver.
What “iPhone data recovery” can mean
Products use “recovery” to describe different workflows. Distinguishing them helps avoid buying a backup manager when you need a device scan—or expecting a device scan to find data that is no longer accessible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Method | What it does | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Recently Deleted | Restores an item still held in an app’s temporary deleted-items folder. | Check this before installing software; retention and eligibility are app-specific. |
| Restore from backup | Returns an iPhone to the state captured in an iCloud or computer backup. | This is a device restore, not necessarily a selective export. Review Apple’s restore instructions before proceeding. |
| Extract a computer backup | Reads data already present in a Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes backup and may let you export selected items. | It does not prove that deleted data absent from the backup can be recovered. |
| Cloud or app-data access | Attempts to retrieve information from an account or app-related source. | Coverage depends on the service, account, permissions, and what data is still available. |
| Direct device scan | Attempts to locate recoverable data through a connected iPhone. | Access to iOS data is restricted; a scan is not a guarantee of undelete. |
| Backup repair | Attempts to make a damaged backup usable or extractable. | Repair is not the same as recovering data that was never in the backup. Preserve a copy before attempting repair. |
Five iPhone recovery tools to consider
This is a shortlist, not a claim that these products were independently tested for this article. Product features below are attributed to the named vendors or publisher. Confirm the current software build, exact iPhone model and iOS version support, preview and export limits, and license terms before purchase.
#1 Best Overall
- The iRecovery Stick extracts messages, call history, contacts, web history, calendar appointments, photos, voice memos, email accounts, and map history directly from iPhone and iPad devices. Running entirely from the USB stick with no software installed on the device or computer, it leaves no trace that an extraction was performed.
- Uncover images concealed using photo-hiding apps and use the iSearch keyword function to search for specific words, names, phone numbers, or symbols across the entire device at once, eliminating the need to manually browse through individual apps and folders. Bookmark important findings and export content for reporting and analysis.
- The iRecovery Stick processes phone backup files stored on your Windows PC or copied from a Mac computer. If a device was backed up to a computer before items were deleted, those items may still be recoverable from the backup. Photos sent in text message conversations but deleted from the photo library may also be recovered if the conversation was not deleted.
- The iRecovery Stick requires physical access to the target device. The user must be able to disable the passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID before extraction begins. If the device was previously backed up to a computer using a password, that password will also be required to process the backup data.
- Use the iRecovery Stick on as many iPhone and iPad devices as needed with no per-device fees. Free lifetime updates ensure ongoing compatibility with future iOS versions, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.
1. Dr.Fone – Data Recovery (iOS)
Wondershare’s 2026 comparison describes Dr.Fone as offering recovery modes for data from an iOS device, iCloud, iTunes, and local backups. Check Wondershare’s current product terms and compatibility details before relying on a particular mode: Dr.Fone – iOS Data Recovery.
2. EaseUS MobiSaver
EaseUS MobiSaver appears in both vendor and editorial comparisons. Its feature breadth, supported iOS versions, pricing, and licensing can change; verify the current details for your device and intended recovery source on the EaseUS MobiSaver product page. 4. iMazing
iMazing is particularly relevant when the task is extracting or managing data in backups, or attempting to repair a damaged backup. Its documentation explains that device file-system access is limited and describes retrieving information surfaced through iOS services and backups. How to compare tools for your situation
Before paying, match the product to the source most likely to contain your missing data. A long list of supported file types does not establish that those files can be recovered from your device, account, or backup.
Rank #4
- Highest recovery rate in the industry.
- Recover photos, videos, contacts, messages, notes, call logs, and more.
- Compatible with latest iOS devices.
- Source: Does the tool work with the source you actually have—device scan, local backup, cloud or app data, or backup repair?
- Data type: Confirm support for the particular item you need, such as photos, messages, contacts, notes, or app data.
- Exact compatibility: Verify your iPhone model, iOS version, computer operating system, and backup format with the vendor. Broad claims do not establish support for every model or release.
- Preview and export: Check which functions are free and which require payment. Do not assume that a preview means the item can be exported without a license.
- Type of operation: Separate direct recovery attempts from backup extraction, backup restoration, management, and repair. They address different problems.
- Price and license: Review current pricing, renewal terms, device limits, and refund conditions on the vendor’s site; older prices in comparisons may no longer apply.
What published testing does—and does not—show
MacObserver says it tested products using an iPhone 14 running iOS 18. Its described test included five photos, two contacts, one note, and one iMessage thread, and covered device scan, iTunes backup scan, and iCloud recovery modes. It also lists comparison metrics. These details are useful for understanding that publisher’s procedure, but they do not establish current compatibility or predictable results on another model, iOS version, file set, or software build. Read the MacObserver comparison for its method and results.

Best Value
- The PBN-TEC Digital Investigation Kit is a comprehensive eight-tool investigation system trusted by law enforcement agencies, private investigators, IT security professionals, legal teams, and even concerned parents. One kit covers mobile device extraction, computer investigations, evidence collection, illicit content detection, audio monitoring, and secure file deletion — no additional software purchases required.
- The iRecovery Stick extracts and investigates data from iPhone and iPad devices, the Phone Recovery Stick handles Android phones and tablets, and the SIM Card Seizure analyzes data from virtually any GSM SIM card. Together these three tools provide complete mobile device investigation coverage from a single kit, including contacts, messages, call logs, and photos.
- The Data Recovery Stick recovers deleted files from any Windows OS, the Voice Logger installs an audio monitoring application onto any Windows computer, and the Data Shredder Stick securely deletes files and wipes storage when the investigation is complete. All three tools work on Windows XP or newer with no additional software required.
- The Capturra Action Drive 1TB automatically collects targeted file types from virtually any device, serving as both an evidence storage drive and a targeted file collection tool for focused investigations. The XXX Detection Stick then scans the collected evidence for illicit content, categorizing results into Low Suspect, Suspect, and Highly Suspect for review.
- The Digital Investigation Kit includes everything needed to begin an investigation immediately — a Data Cable Kit with iPhone, USB-C, and Micro USB cables, a universal SIM Card Adapter compatible with all SIM card sizes, and a Softshell Compartmentalized Protection Case to organize and transport all eight tools securely.
Choose by the data you still have access to
- An item may still be in an app’s Recently Deleted folder: use that app’s built-in option first.
- You have a usable backup and want selected files: look for backup extraction and verify that the backup contains the data; a backup manager may fit better than a direct undelete tool.
- You have a damaged backup: consider a tool whose documented purpose includes backup repair, and preserve a copy of the original backup before attempting changes.
- You have no backup or visible copy: a direct-scan product may offer an attempt, but available evidence does not support promising that it will restore permanently deleted data.
If a chosen workflow requires a wired connection, use a cable compatible with both the iPhone and computer ports. A cable only connects the devices; it does not recover data.
