Start in the app that deleted the item: Android has no single, phone-wide Trash folder. Check that app’s Trash or Bin, then look for a copy in the Google, Samsung, or other account you had already set up to back it up. Restore promptly if you find it. There is no documented universal countdown before Android data is overwritten, and no general guarantee that permanently deleted internal-storage data can be recovered.
First, identify where the deletion happened
Google Photos, a phone maker’s Gallery, Files by Google, and other file or media apps can each have separate deletion and recovery rules. One app’s Trash does not show everything deleted from the phone. Also distinguish a local file from a cloud-library item: a Gallery may display device files, backed-up media, or both.
- If you deleted a photo or video, start with the app where you viewed or deleted it, such as Google Photos or the phone’s Gallery.
- If you deleted a downloaded document or other file, check Files by Google or the file manager you used.
- If data disappeared from an individual app, check that app’s own recovery or backup options; Android device backup does not cover every app’s data uniformly.
Check the app’s Trash or Bin
Google Photos or your phone’s Gallery
Open the app used to delete the photo or video and inspect its Trash or Bin. In Google Photos, select the item and choose Restore. Menu names and steps can vary by device; Google advises contacting the device manufacturer for device-specific help. Google’s documented guidance says an unbacked-up item deleted from a device running Android 11 or later remains in Trash for 30 days. Other backup situations can have different retention rules. For Samsung Galaxy phones, check Gallery Trash if you used Samsung Gallery. Samsung’s India support guidance says items are permanently deleted after 60 days in Trash, but screens and availability can vary by model, software version, and wireless provider. Files by Google
In Files by Google, open Menu → Trash, select the file, and tap Restore. Files remain there for 30 days before automatic deletion. A file manually deleted from Trash is permanently deleted. Files removed using the app’s “Junk files” clean action are also permanently deleted rather than moved to Trash. See Files by Google’s Trash instructions and its guidance on clearing junk files.
Know what the retention periods mean

These are app-specific windows, not a universal Android recovery guarantee. Restore an item while it is still available in the relevant Trash.

Look for a copy in an existing backup
Google Photos
Sign in to the Google account that may have backed up the media, then check Google Photos on the phone and at photos.google.com. Backed-up photos may remain in the Google Photos library after the device copy is removed. Google specifically notes that items removed with “Free up space” can remain visible in Photos and on the web if they were backed up; verify the backup before using that feature. This is a separate cloud copy, not proof that the local file can be restored from the phone’s Trash. See Google Photos Help.

On the phone, open Settings → Google → Backup and review the account and included data. Google lists app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS among backup categories, but warns that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. Restoring other backed-up device data is part of initial setup or a factory reset, subject to Android-version conditions; it is not a general undelete command. Confirm what is backed up and understand the reset’s consequences before considering it. See Google’s Android backup and restore guidance.

Samsung Gallery sync and other copies
Samsung support describes Gallery sync moving from Samsung Cloud to Microsoft OneDrive. Whether a usable copy exists depends on the device, region, settings, and account. Check OneDrive only if Gallery sync was enabled for the relevant account. Likewise, check a computer backup or another cloud account only if you actually used it; an unconfigured service cannot supply a copy.

Google’s Photos guidance states: “If a deleted photo or video isn’t in your Google Photos or Gallery trash, you can’t restore it.” That describes those Trash recovery routes; a separate backup copy may still exist in an account or another location. Files by Google also treats items removed from Trash or deleted through its junk-cleaning action as permanently deleted from that app’s Trash path.

Do not treat “before it’s overwritten” as a reliable deadline. The official recovery guidance cited here does not specify a universal overwrite countdown, success rate, or guarantee for recovering permanently deleted data from Android internal storage. It does not establish that a generic recovery app, rooting the phone, or connecting it to a computer will recover such data. If the file is absent from the relevant Trash and no backup or other copy exists, the documented routes may be exhausted; what might be possible beyond them depends on the device and deletion circumstances, and is not established by these support instructions.

Use a short recovery checklist
- Identify the app and account involved in the deletion.
- Check that app’s Trash or Bin and restore the item if it is present.
- Sign in to accounts you had already used for photo sync or backup and check for a separate copy.
- For app-specific data, consult that app’s backup and restore options rather than assuming Android backup includes it.
- Before any factory reset, verify the relevant backup and understand that restoring device data this way is not a universal undelete function.
