The safest replacement depends on what you are waiting for. If the delayed title is a known sequel, play its direct predecessor first: Grand Theft Auto V is the clearest choice before Grand Theft Auto VI, while The Wolf Among Us is the logical starting point before The Wolf Among Us 2. If the delayed game is unspecified, match the part of the experience you want now—social racing, exploration, solo shooting, tactical decisions, or a story-led RPG.
A delay is also a buying signal, not a quality guarantee. Recheck the revised date, supported platforms, edition details, and storefront cancellation rules before spending money or keeping a preorder.

Choose by the experience you want, not just the title you are missing
Readers usually ask one of two questions: “What should I play while I wait for a delayed game?” or “What game is most similar to the one that moved?” The answer changes depending on whether continuity or gameplay matters more.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Franchise continuity: Choose the earlier game in the same series when you want familiar characters, setting, controls, and story context.
- Gameplay loop: Choose another game that delivers the same activity—racing, exploration, shooting, tactical combat, or dialogue-driven role-playing—even if the story and world are unrelated.
- Solo or multiplayer: A solo substitute will not replace a regular group session, and a competitive multiplayer game will not satisfy someone waiting for a private, narrative campaign.
- Narrative depth: If the delayed game’s appeal is its plot, characters, and choices, prioritize a story-led game rather than a superficially similar genre.
- Platform: A perfect substitute is useless if it does not run on the console, handheld, or PC you already own.
- Immediate access: If you want something playable tonight, favor a currently available release and verify its edition and platform before ordering.
The matrix below turns those priorities into a quick decision.
#1 Best Overall
- BECOME A FEARSOME PIRATE- Strike fear in your foes as you board and sink enemy vessels as Edward Kenway, captain of the Jackdaw. Whether blending into crowds or leading daring assaults, switch between silent takedowns and fierce brawls as you effortlessly wield swords, pistols, and the Hidden Blade. With a cast of historical pirate legends at your side, defy empires amidst the age-old conflict opposing Assassins and Templars.
- A CLASSIC REBUILT FOR AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE- Combat has been rebuilt for more dynamic encounters, emphasizing parries and takedowns, while stealth and parkour have been improved for smoother escapes and assassinations. Continuously upgrade the Jackdaw to face powerful enemy ships with enhanced naval mechanics featuring new alternate fire modes. Quality-of-life additions also address previous pain points, ensuring your experience is improved.
- THE CARIBBEAN LIKE NEVER BEFORE- Whether you’re sailing the open seas or journeying across untamed lands, discover a seamless open world built with the latest Anvil engine. Take in sweeping vistas as you brave stormy waters, dive into underwater shipwrecks, or push through dense tropical jungles. Enhanced by features such as Dolby Atmos and ray tracing, every scene feels more immersive, bringing the world’s beauty to life.
- EXPANDING EDWARD’S ADVENTURE- Building on top of the original story, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced introduces exclusive new content. Familiar faces will return, with new storylines dedicated to fan-favorite characters such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Unexpected allies will also cross your path, as three officers join you on your journey as part of the main narrative. More surprises await, such as new sea shanties, pets, a photo mode, and more.

When the delayed title is a known sequel
Before Grand Theft Auto VI: play Grand Theft Auto V
If your priority is understanding the franchise’s latest mainline entry before Grand Theft Auto VI, Grand Theft Auto V is the safest substitute. It gives you direct continuity rather than merely borrowing an open-world crime premise from another series.
Choose it when you want to reacquaint yourself with the setting, tone, mission structure, and principal characters that define the previous numbered game. It is especially useful if you skipped the earlier release or last played it years ago and want a refresher before the new entry arrives.
Do not treat it as a promise that every system, character, or story beat will carry forward. A predecessor supplies context; it cannot establish unannounced features of a sequel. Check the edition and platform you intend to buy, because availability and supported versions can change over time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore The Wolf Among Us 2: play The Wolf Among Us
For readers waiting on The Wolf Among Us 2, the original The Wolf Among Us is the direct narrative starting point. Playing it first lets you meet the established cast and understand the choices and relationships that make a continuation meaningful.
This is a stronger match than choosing a random adventure game simply because it uses dialogue or episodic storytelling. If your main reason for waiting is the characters and unresolved story context, continuity matters more than a shared genre label.
Because release plans and platform support for unreleased projects can change, verify the current listing for the sequel separately rather than assuming the original’s availability guarantees anything about the continuation.
When the delayed game is defined by its play style
Mario Kart World for social racing on Switch 2
Choose Mario Kart World when the missing experience is local or online racing with friends on Switch 2. Its value as a substitute comes from the social racing use case, not from sharing a story or setting with another delayed game.
Before buying, confirm that everyone in your group owns compatible hardware and that the modes you expect are supported on your current system. Multiplayer substitutions fail most often when one person assumes a feature, account requirement, or local-play arrangement that the current edition does not provide.
Donkey Kong Bananza for exploration and destruction
If you are waiting for a game built around moving through spaces, discovering routes, and interacting destructively with the environment, Donkey Kong Bananza is the closest choice in this set. It targets exploration and action rather than competitive matches or a branching dialogue campaign.

Use it when the physical act of finding and breaking through a world is more important than following a particular franchise. It is a poor replacement if your real requirement is a deep party-based narrative or a persistent multiplayer community.
Splatoon Raiders for solo shooting progression
Splatoon Raiders is the option for someone who wants a mission-based solo shooter while waiting. That distinction matters: a game can share a shooting mechanic yet still miss the mark if it expects constant competitive multiplayer.
Pick it when you want structured solo progress and short sessions that can be resumed easily. Confirm its current platform listing and release status before purchase, since availability for announced games is subject to change.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave for tactical, branching storytelling
Choose Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave when the attraction is turn-based tactical play combined with a story that can take multiple paths. It is a better fit for readers who enjoy planning several moves ahead and seeing decisions shape the narrative than for readers seeking real-time action.
Check whether your preferred language, edition, and platform are supported in your region. Tactical RPGs can demand a larger time commitment than a quick replacement match, so consider whether you want a long campaign or a short-term diversion.
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter for a story-first RPG
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter fits readers who primarily want a substantial, character-driven RPG while a newer title is delayed. Its role in this list is narrative depth: choose it when world-building, dialogue, and a continuing story matter more than novelty or cutting-edge presentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is not the right substitute for a player who wants immediate competitive action. Allow time for a story-led RPG to develop, and verify how its availability and platform version align with your hardware before committing.
Use this five-question filter before choosing
1. What is the non-negotiable part of the delayed game?
Write down one requirement rather than listing every feature. Examples include “same franchise,” “solo missions,” “online races with friends,” “branching tactical decisions,” or “a long story.” The first requirement should determine your shortlist.
2. Is continuity worth more than novelty?
A direct predecessor is usually the lowest-risk choice for a sequel because it preserves the fictional context and familiar design language. Choose a genre substitute instead when you already know the earlier game or when the delayed title’s appeal is primarily mechanical.

3. Will you play alone?
Solo and multiplayer games create different commitments. A social racing game is only a practical replacement if your group can play at compatible times. Conversely, a campaign-focused game may be ideal if you want progress that does not depend on anyone else being online.
4. How much story context do you want?
If you are waiting because of characters, relationships, or unresolved plot threads, start with the direct predecessor or a story-led RPG. If the story is incidental and the loop is the attraction, select by activity instead.
5. Can you play it on your existing platform today?
Check the current platform listing, region, edition, and any required subscription before paying. “Available” can mean different things across physical retail, digital stores, and subscription catalogs, and those terms can change without changing the game’s name.
What a delay does—and does not—tell you
A delay changes the timing and information around a purchase; it does not prove that the finished game will be excellent. The revised date may reflect additional development, certification, manufacturing, scheduling, or another reason that is not visible to players. Treat the announcement as a prompt to reassess your purchase, not as a quality guarantee.
One study of 23,485 Steam games found that 48% had a delayed initial release. Among the games that delayed, the median delay was 14 days, according to Grewal, Lin, Doucet, and Bezemer (2022). That statistic describes a large historical sample; it does not predict the length or quality of any particular upcoming title, and it concerns initial-release delays on Steam rather than every console or regional release.
Do not rely on the saying that a delayed game is eventually good while a rushed game is permanently bad. The phrase circulates widely, but the available record does not establish a verifiable speaker, role, or original publication for it. The practical lesson is simpler: evaluate the new information you actually have.
Should you keep or cancel a preorder?
A delay does not automatically create a refund right. Your options depend on the storefront, payment status, edition, and local consumer rules. Use this order of checks before deciding.
- Read the revised release information. Record the new date, time zone if supplied, and whether the announcement applies to every platform or only one version.
- Check whether you have already been charged. Some stores take payment immediately; others charge near release. A pending authorization, deposit, or completed transaction can have different cancellation treatment.
- Check preload and early-access status. If preload has begun or an access entitlement has been used, the store may apply different cancellation conditions.
- Open the specific storefront’s cancellation policy. Do not assume that a rule from another platform, retailer, region, or previous purchase applies to this order.
- Revalue the preorder benefits. Keep it only if the edition, discount, physical allocation, bonus, or access benefit still matters after the delay.
- Compare the opportunity cost. If your money is tied up, the date is uncertain, and another game meets your needs now, cancellation may be more sensible even when a refund is not guaranteed.
- Save confirmation. Keep the order number, announcement, and any support response until the transaction is settled.
Do not cancel solely because the word “delayed” sounds negative, and do not keep a preorder solely because you have already waited. Make the decision from the current date, current terms, and the value of the edition you would actually receive.
Platform and edition checks that prevent avoidable mistakes
- Console generation: Confirm the exact model, not merely the console family. A listing can distinguish between generations or editions.
- Switch 2 compatibility: For the Switch 2 choices above, verify whether you are buying a native version, an upgrade, or another form of compatibility.
- Physical versus digital: A physical copy may have different stock, delivery timing, storage requirements, and cancellation terms than a digital preorder.
- Region: Release timing, ratings, language support, and storefront policies can differ by country.
- Online requirements: Multiplayer use may require an account, subscription, broadband connection, or a specific mode that is not included in every edition.
- Storage and download: Check the current install requirement and whether a physical product still needs a substantial download.
- Save compatibility: If you are replacing a game within a series, confirm whether saves or progression carry over; never assume that a sequel imports them.
Waiting plans based on how long the delay lasts
If you need something for one evening
Pick the option with the least setup and the clearest match for your available time. Social racing works when friends are ready, while a solo shooter or exploration game is easier to start alone. Avoid beginning a very long RPG if you only want a brief diversion.

If you have several weeks
Use the period to finish the direct predecessor, revisit its story, or learn the substitute’s core systems. This is the best window for Grand Theft Auto V before Grand Theft Auto VI or The Wolf Among Us before its continuation because you gain context rather than merely filling time.
If the new date is open-ended
Do not build your entire schedule around an unconfirmed release. Choose a game you would still value if the delayed title moves again, and avoid buying multiple substitutes solely from fear of missing out. Recheck the official listing periodically instead of relying on an old preorder page or social-media post.
Common substitution mistakes
Choosing a similar setting instead of a similar loop
Two games can feature crime, fantasy, or science fiction and still play completely differently. Identify the activity you repeat minute to minute—racing, exploring, shooting, tactical planning, or reading dialogue—before comparing themes.
Confusing a predecessor with a complete preview
The earlier game can explain continuity, but it cannot confirm the sequel’s final mechanics, technical performance, monetization, or release date. Treat it as preparation, not evidence of what the unreleased game will be.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring the group you intend to play with
A multiplayer substitute loses its value when friends use different platforms, lack the required subscription, or cannot play at the same times. Confirm those details before buying for a group.
Assuming a delay means a refund
Refund eligibility is controlled by the specific seller and transaction state. Check the policy and your order record rather than relying on a general rule.
Buying before checking volatile facts
Release dates, platform support, stock, prices, edition contents, and preorder rules can change. Verify them immediately before purchase and again if the delay announcement is followed by another update.
A practical decision in one minute
- If the delayed title is a sequel and you have not played the previous entry, start there.
- If you have played the predecessor, choose the substitute that matches the loop you miss most.
- For Switch 2 social racing, choose Mario Kart World; for exploration and destruction, choose Donkey Kong Bananza; for solo shooting, choose Splatoon Raiders.
- For tactical, branching storytelling, choose Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave; for a story-led RPG, choose Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter.
- Before any preorder decision, verify the revised date, payment status, preload or early-access status, and the exact cancellation policy.
That approach gives you a playable choice now without pretending that a substitute can reveal an unreleased game’s final quality or schedule.
