Contract-first engineering makes an interface definition a shared, reviewable artifact before services are integrated. In distributed core banking, that means specifying both synchronous requests that ask a service to act and asynchronous events that report a business change—then agreeing on what each interaction means, how it can fail, and how it will be governed. The contract improves clarity; it does not, by itself, guarantee that running systems conform or meet banking reliability requirements.
What does contract-first mean in distributed core banking?
A contract is a machine-readable description of an interface: its operations or channels, message and data formats, and expected behavior. In a contract-first workflow, teams define and review that interface early, before treating separate implementations as ready to integrate. The contract gives producers and consumers a common reference for what is exchanged and what each side is expected to do.
This is especially useful when a banking capability is split across services. A request to perform an operation and an event announcing that business state has changed are not interchangeable: they have different semantics, timing, and failure modes. Modeling them explicitly helps teams review responsibility and behavior at the boundary instead of relying only on implementation details.
How do synchronous calls differ from asynchronous events?
| Interaction style | What the contract describes | Questions teams need to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous request/response | Operations, inputs, outputs, data formats, and expected behavior for a call. OpenAPI is a familiar specification family for HTTP interfaces. | What operation is requested? What response is expected? What happens when the request is delayed, erroneous, or unavailable? |
| Asynchronous event exchange | Channels, messages, and related details of an asynchronous API. AsyncAPI is a specification and tooling ecosystem for defining and maintaining these interfaces. | What business change does the event represent? When is it emitted? How should a consumer handle delay, repetition, or out-of-order processing? |
AsyncAPI is a modeling layer, not a broker product. Its project describes platform- and language-agnostic specifications and tooling for common brokers such as Kafka and RabbitMQ, and languages including Python, Java, and Node.js. A bank’s broker, language, and deployment choices remain implementation decisions.

How should a banking contract express business meaning?
Start with semantic ownership: identify which service domain is responsible for a business concept and its state transitions. BIAN provides a banking-specific conceptual framework through service domains and semantic API guidance. Its Semantic API Practitioner Guide V8.1 (2020) is clear that the framework informs design but does not mechanically prescribe a bank’s implementation architecture.
The contract should describe enough shared vocabulary for producers and consumers to interpret information consistently. That precision matters because a change in a value’s meaning can change service behavior. For events in particular, a schema alone is not enough: teams need to understand what state change triggers publication, what the event means, and what policies govern the exchange.

Make event behavior explicit
- State and triggers: Specify relevant state, event profiles, trigger logic, thresholds, and policies.
- Operation agreements: Define performance expectations, information-integrity requirements, and security controls.
- Defensive behavior: State how operations should respond to delayed or erroneous requests.
- Duplicate and ordering tolerance: Define how consumers behave if an exchange is repeated or business events are processed in a different relative order.
- Operational support: Account for service discovery, messaging, transaction logging, state and trigger handling, and assurance utilities.
BIAN’s 2020 guide states: “The Service Domains must handle duplicate exchanges and tolerate that any business event may result in parallel threads of activity that can complete in different relative sequences based on prevailing physical conditions.” For implementation teams, that principle makes repeat handling, ordering assumptions, and idempotency or commutativity expectations matters to settle in the contract and its governance—not assumptions to leave implicit.
What does a contract-first workflow look like?
- Establish the boundary. Identify the business capability, the service domain responsible for its information, and whether the interaction is a request, an event, or both.
- Define the contract. Describe operations or channels, messages and data formats, business meaning, expected behavior, and applicable integrity, security, and performance expectations.
- Review with consumers and producers. Check that the proposed terms and behavior are understood by the services that publish and use the interface. Review changes for compatibility and clarify ownership.
- Validate in the delivery workflow. Version contracts and run specification validation and compatibility checks in CI. Code generation can reduce repetitive interface work, but generated artifacts still need integration checks and governance.
- Publish and test accessibly. Make the current interface documentation easy for teams to find, and test behavior with real or representative consumers rather than assuming that a valid specification proves integration behavior.
- Operate against the agreement. Connect the contract’s expectations to operational controls for security, integrity, observability, service discovery, transaction assurance, and latency objectives.
These are governance activities as well as engineering tasks. A specification can make intended behavior inspectable, but conformance depends on implementation, deployment, review discipline, and operational controls.

What does this look like in practice?
TransferGo’s company-reported AsyncAPI account describes one fintech workflow: generating AsyncAPI schemas from DTOs, adding validation pipelines and schema scoring as service and channel counts grow, publishing through a central developer portal, and running end-to-end contract tests against real message consumers using Microcks and LocalStack in Jenkins CI. It is an example of one organization’s approach, not an independent performance study or a universal recipe.
The transferable idea is to connect interface definitions to review, validation, documentation, and consumer testing. Whether a bank generates schemas from code or maintains them another way is an organization-specific choice; either path needs checks that the published contract and deployed behavior stay aligned.

How does contract-first fit a core banking architecture?
Contracts clarify boundaries inside architectures that may use independently scaling services, event-driven processing, API ingress, monitoring and auditing, and security controls. They do not select an architecture or cloud provider. For example, Amazon Web Services publishes a cloud-specific reference design for a modern core banking system; it describes those architectural elements and is guidance for that environment, not a neutral standard or evidence that the design suits every bank.

That AWS guidance describes an example targeting a response of about 200 ms for real-time transactions written to the database, with the response returned through direct connectivity to the bank’s data center and by minimizing hops to the ledger database. This is a scoped figure from AWS guidance; it is not an industry benchmark or a universal service-level objective. Each bank must set and validate latency objectives for its own infrastructure and transaction path.

What contract-first does—and does not—guarantee
- It can make interface intent, data meaning, responsibilities, and expected behavior more explicit and reviewable.
- It can support repeatable validation, consumer review, documentation, and integration testing when those steps are built into governance.
- It cannot alone ensure runtime conformance, semantic correctness, interoperability, or banking-grade reliability. Those depend on how contracts are governed, implemented, deployed, and operated.
The useful test is not whether a specification file exists. It is whether the right service owners agree on its meaning, whether changes are reviewed with affected consumers, and whether deployed systems and operational controls are checked against the agreement.
