Defence Bank’s Home Contents Plus is a renters contents-insurance option arranged by Defence Bank and issued by Insurance Australia Limited under the CGU brand. Its public summary highlights automatic accidental-damage and motor-burnout cover, and up to two years of temporary accommodation after a covered event leaves the home unliveable. Those features may suit renters who want broader cover, but the summary is not the policy contract: check the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), your quote and your certificate before deciding.
What is Defence Bank Home Contents Plus for renters?
Defence Bank offers a standard Contents option and Contents Plus. Contents insurance is intended to cover belongings against specified incidents; it does not insure the building itself. Defence Bank says Contents Plus includes contents replacement cover, automatically includes accidental damage and motor burnout, and increases some inclusion limits. The bank’s overview describes these features at Defence Bank’s Building and Contents Insurance page.
For renters, the bank says contents insurance can pay reasonable extra rent costs for temporary accommodation if a covered event makes the home unliveable. That benefit is conditional: the event and circumstances must meet the policy terms, and limits and exclusions apply. The public summary is not an individual quote, policy schedule or claim decision.

What does Contents Plus publicly say it covers?
Defence Bank’s overview lists theft and vandalism, fire, flood, rainwater runoff, storm, storm surge and tsunami among the covered event categories. These are summary-level descriptions, not a guarantee that every loss associated with one of those events is covered. The same overview expressly excludes actions of the sea, such as tides and waves. Read the relevant definitions, conditions and exclusions in the policy wording before relying on any event description.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Accidental damage and motor burnout
The bank says accidental damage and motor burnout are automatically included with Contents Plus. Its public summary does not establish every qualifying circumstance or exclusion, so check the current PDS for the scope of each benefit.
Temporary accommodation
Defence Bank describes up to two years of temporary accommodation under Contents Plus if a covered event makes the home unliveable; the standard Contents option is described as providing 12 months. For renters, the bank specifically refers to reasonable extra rent costs. The exact contractual meaning of “unliveable,” what counts as reasonable extra rent and any applicable cap or other conditions must be checked in the current policy documents.

Food spoilage
The public overview says food spoilage has no excess and lists a limit of up to $2,000 for Contents Plus, compared with up to $500 for standard Contents. These are stated product limits, subject to policy terms. Check the PDS for the precise circumstances and definitions.
Belongings taken away from home
Portable contents is an optional add-on for items taken away from home. The overview gives a general limit of up to $10,000 per item unless the item is separately listed for more. It also notes restrictions for items taken outside Australia or New Zealand and exclusions that include scratches and dents, items being cleaned or repaired, and certain equipment while in use. Confirm whether the cover suits the item, activity and destination you have in mind; do not assume ordinary contents cover follows belongings everywhere.

What should renters check before choosing it?
Estimate the replacement cost of your belongings
Choose a contents sum insured based on what it would cost to replace your belongings, not their original purchase prices. Defence Bank recommends making a room-by-room inventory. For larger electronics, it suggests recording details such as the model, production date, serial number, value and purchase price. A notebook, spreadsheet or list on your phone can all help you build and update the inventory. Its guidance is on Defence Bank’s Building and Contents Insurance page.
Get the actual premium and excess
The public overview does not establish your premium or the excess that would apply to your policy. Use a current quote and check the certificate for the amounts and any differences by claim type. A price or excess from another household’s quote would not tell you what you will pay.

List items you regularly take outside the home, then check whether they need the optional portable contents add-on or separate listing. Review the per-item limit, territorial restrictions and exclusions against how and where you use each item.

Check claims, exclusions and settlement terms
Use the current PDS, certificate and insurer’s instructions to understand claim conditions, evidence requirements, settlement method and exclusions. Defence Bank’s disclosure index links a Home Insurance PDS and a Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide; the PDS endpoint could not be retrieved for this review, so its current detailed terms cannot be verified here. The bank itself advises: “Read the Product Disclosure Statement to see exactly what’s included.” Start with the product overview and follow its links to the current disclosure documents.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the main strengths and limitations?
| Area | What the public information supports | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Contents Plus features | Accidental damage and motor burnout are described as automatically included. | Definitions, exclusions and qualifying circumstances in the current PDS. |
| Temporary accommodation | Up to two years for Contents Plus, compared with 12 months for standard Contents; renters may receive reasonable extra rent costs after a covered event makes the home unliveable. | How the benefit is triggered, what costs qualify and any cap or other conditions. |
| Food spoilage | No excess is stated; the listed limits are up to $2,000 for Plus and up to $500 for standard Contents. | Eligibility, definitions and all applicable policy limits. |
| Portable belongings | Optional cover is available; the general per-item limit is up to $10,000 unless separately listed for more. | Whether an item must be listed, and the territorial, activity and item exclusions. |
| Price and claims | Not stated in the public summary for an individual renter. | Live quote, certificate, current PDS and insurer claim instructions. |
The practical advantage is that the bank’s summary identifies several useful features for renters, including accidental-damage cover at the Plus tier and a longer stated accommodation period than standard Contents. The principal limitation for a buying decision is that the summary does not establish the detailed terms, personal price or likely claim outcome. Defence Bank discloses that it receives commission when selling CGU insurance products; consider that disclosure when assessing the bank’s product information, rather than treating the page as an independent endorsement. See Defence Bank’s insurance page.
How to compare it with another renters policy
Compare policies using the same replacement-cost estimate and household details. Look beyond the headline premium: a lower price may come with a different excess, narrower cover or lower limits. Compare the contract terms across these points:
- Insured events and exclusions, including how the policy treats water and storm-related losses.
- Whether accidental damage is included, optional or excluded.
- Portable belongings: optional-cover requirements, per-item limits, territorial scope and activity exclusions.
- Temporary accommodation: trigger, duration, monetary cap and definition of reasonable costs.
- Food spoilage, valuables and other item sublimits.
- Excesses by claim type, premium for the same sum insured and household, and claim settlement terms.
Do not infer value from a product summary alone. The current PDS and your quote and certificate are necessary to compare the actual contractual cover and cost.
