Deep ultraviolet (DUV) means short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation, but there is no single wavelength cutoff that applies in every field. A technical reference uses “below 300 nm” for DUV in photolithography and laser technology; that is a field-specific definition, not a universal UV standard. The exact band matters because sources may use DUV for different technical purposes, while UV-C is also discussed in germicidal applications.
What does deep ultraviolet mean?
Deep ultraviolet is a descriptive term for short-wavelength UV. In photolithography and laser technology, one technical reference defines DUV as wavelengths below 300 nanometers (nm). The reference is a book-preview excerpt, so its definition should be understood in that context rather than as a universal boundary. Technical reference excerpt
For a broader baseline, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes ultraviolet radiation as 100–400 nm. It divides UV into UVA at 315–400 nm, UVB at 280–315 nm, and UVC at 100–280 nm. The European Union’s Directive 2006/25/EC uses the same ranges in its legal definitions. These UV subdivisions are more standardized in the cited sources than the term DUV. NIST glossary · EU Directive 2006/25/EC, consolidated text

How does DUV differ from UV-C?
DUV and UV-C are related descriptions of short-wave ultraviolet, but they are not interchangeable in every context. A “below 300 nm” DUV definition overlaps the shorter UV bands, including part of UV-B and UV-C under NIST’s divisions. Germicidal guidance often uses a narrower UV-C band, and its endpoints vary by source.

| Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), UV-C FAQ | UV-C: 200–280 nm. IES CR-2-20 FAQ |

| CDC-hosted NIOSH report (2008) | UV-C: 200–280 nm; the report identifies 265 nm as the optimum germicidal wavelength in its description. Report (PDF) |
The different endpoints reflect conventions and application framing. Use the range stated by the relevant source rather than treating one UV-C band as universal. The 265 nm figure belongs to the 2008 report’s discussion of germicidal effect; it is not a general optimum for every DUV application.
What is deep ultraviolet used for?
Photolithography and laser technology
In these technical contexts, the cited reference applies DUV to wavelengths below 300 nm. The term describes a short-wavelength light regime; it does not by itself specify a particular machine, laser, or semiconductor process.

Germicidal ultraviolet
UV-C is used in institutional guidance about germicidal irradiation and disinfection. That application is related to short-wave UV, but it does not make every DUV source a germicidal product. Whether a specific device is intended for disinfection depends on its design and applicable product requirements.

Short-wave UV can injure people. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that UVC exposure can cause severe skin burns and eye injuries, including photokeratitis. Avoid direct exposure and follow the safeguards and instructions specified for the source or device. FDA: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation

Safety documents cover different wavelength ranges and equipment categories, so their scopes should not be treated as interchangeable:
- IEC PAS 63313:2021 provides safety advice for UV-C sources and products emitting 180–280 nm, with exclusions for some equipment categories that have their own product standards. IEC PAS 63313:2021
- IEC 62471-6:2022 addresses UV lamp product risk assessment, risk groups, user safety information, and labeling. IEC 62471-6:2022
- ANSI/CAN/UL 8802:2023 covers specified UV germicidal equipment and systems and states a 200–400 nm scope; it says emissions outside that range are not fully addressed. ANSI/CAN/UL 8802:2023
For a real device, consult the current product standard and its manufacturer’s safety instructions. A broad DUV label alone does not identify the appropriate safety requirements.

How to interpret a DUV wavelength claim
- Check the application. Determine whether the source is being described for lithography or laser technology, germicidal use, or another purpose.
- Look for the stated wavelength range. If a source says only “DUV,” do not assume a universal cutoff; check the technical specification or the definition used by that source.
- Keep UV-C conventions attached to their source. Institutional materials may define UV-C as 200–280 nm, while NIST’s general classification places UVC at 100–280 nm.
- For safety, identify the equipment category. Use the standard and safeguards applicable to the particular product rather than inferring them from the DUV or UV-C label.
