Deep-sea fish are not one feeding type. The term covers many species and feeding guilds: some search for prey, some ambush it, some use light or other sensory cues, and others depend on unusually large mouths, teeth or jaws. Deep-sea anglerfish are part of that broader group. Many are distinguished by an attraction strategy: a modified fin ray carries a fleshy lure that brings prey close enough for a rapid, suction-assisted strike.

The useful comparison is therefore between the diverse ways deep-sea fishes find and capture food and the lure-centered tactic common in many deep-sea anglerfish. It is not a comparison between two mutually exclusive kinds of fish.

First, separate the two categories

Deep-sea fish is an ecological description. It refers to fishes living in the permanently dark or very dim parts of the ocean, where depth, pressure, temperature and food supply shape behavior. A review by Jeffrey C. Drazen and Tracey T. Sutton describes multiple feeding guilds and adaptations rather than one universal deep-sea method. Their 2017 review also estimates that deep-sea fishes inhabit approximately 75% of the biosphere, a reminder that this is an enormous and varied habitat, not a single niche (Drazen and Sutton, 2017).

Anglerfish refers to members of the fish order Lophiiformes. Many lophiiforms live in the deep sea, but the order also includes shallow-water relatives. Their lures do not all work the same way: depending on the lineage, attraction may involve light, chemical cues or a structure that mimics prey. Consequently, “anglerfish” should not be treated as a synonym for “glowing deep-sea fish.”

In this article, “anglerfish” means the deep-sea forms most people picture when they hear the word, while noting where the broader order varies.

Why finding food is difficult in the deep sea

The bathypelagic, or midnight, zone receives no sunlight. NOAA Ocean Exploration identifies darkness, high pressure, cold temperatures and the great distance from the sunlit base of the food chain as constraints on life there. Its summary is blunt: “Therefore, finding food, while simultaneously conserving energy, presents a major challenge.” NOAA published that statement on June 4, 2012, in its Fishes of the Midnight Zone feature.

Those conditions change the economics of hunting. A fish cannot assume that a chase will end with enough calories to repay the energy spent searching. Visual ranges are short or absent, encounters with prey are unpredictable, and pressure and cold affect movement and metabolism. Selection has therefore produced several workable solutions rather than a single “deep-sea feeding strategy.”

Energy conservation does not mean every predator simply waits motionless. A species’ depth, body shape, sensory equipment, prey type and local food supply determine whether active searching, ambush, attraction or a combination is worthwhile.

How deep-sea fish find and capture food

The following strategies overlap. A fish can use more than one, and researchers do not yet have direct feeding observations for many mesopelagic species. The 2025 review Mesopelagic fish traits: functions and trade-offs emphasizes that ecological data and behavioral observations remain scarce for many fishes, so a physical adaptation may indicate a likely function without proving that it is used in every encounter (2025 review).

Active searching and sensory detection

Some deep-sea fishes move through the water column looking for prey. Their sensory systems can detect pressure waves, movement, chemical traces or faint light even when ordinary vision is ineffective. Searching can be advantageous when prey is sufficiently abundant or when a fish has an efficient way to detect targets at a distance. The important point is that “deep sea” does not automatically mean “sit and wait.”

Searching also includes deciding when not to pursue. A predator may investigate a signal, estimate whether the target is worth the effort and then abandon a chase. The trade-off between food gained and energy spent is central to the feeding ecology described in the annual review by Drazen and Sutton.

Ambush and sit-and-wait attacks

Ambush reduces the cost of a long pursuit. A fish can hold position, blend into the darkness or move slowly until prey enters an effective strike range. The attack itself is often brief, using a sudden expansion of the mouth or a rapid jaw movement. This tactic is especially useful when prey is scattered and sustained swimming would be expensive.

Ambush is a strategy, not a taxonomic identity. Different deep-sea families can arrive at it through different body shapes and sensory systems, and a species that usually ambushes may still search when conditions change.

Using light to reveal or signal prey

Bioluminescence has several functions in deep-sea fishes. Some produce light from photophores or other organs that can help illuminate nearby prey, create a visual signal or support camouflage and communication. Light used to expose a target is not automatically a lure: the location, timing and movement of the light determine its role.

NOAA’s description of dragonfishes highlights their luminous chin barbels. A barbel can act as a conspicuous sensory or luminous extension near the mouth, helping a fish investigate the water immediately ahead. Other fishes use photophores in arrangements that may illuminate prey or alter the predator’s silhouette. The 2025 traits review documents these functions as part of a wider set of trade-offs, while cautioning that direct observations are limited for many species.

Large mouths, teeth and expandable jaws

Once a target is close, capture hardware matters. Across deep-sea groups, large gapes, long or needle-like teeth, flexible jaws and expandable stomachs allow a fish to seize prey that may be almost as large as the predator or arriving from an unexpected angle. These features are adaptations for the final phase of feeding, not evidence that every species finds prey in the same way.

A wide gape can shorten the distance at which a strike must be accurate. Teeth can prevent escape after contact. Flexible jaws can increase the volume of water and prey drawn into the mouth. Which combination appears depends on the species’ typical prey and its hunting tactic.

How anglerfish catch prey

The lure has two named parts

In the deep-sea anglerfish familiar from museum and aquarium explanations, the first dorsal-fin ray is modified into a rod-like structure called the illicium. At its tip is a fleshy lure called the esca. The illicium positions the esca away from the head, so a potential meal encounters the apparent “prey” before it reaches the predator’s mouth.

Many deep-sea species house symbiotic bioluminescent bacteria in the esca. The bacteria provide the glow; the fish provides a protected place and access to nutrients. Not every anglerfish has a luminous esca, and not every lophiiform uses the same type of attraction.

Movement makes the esca an invitation

Smithsonian Ocean describes muscular control that lets an anglerfish jerk and wiggle the esca. In darkness, that movement can make the lure resemble a small animal or otherwise draw attention. The fish does not need to cruise through a large volume of water searching for every meal; it can hold the lure where a passing animal may notice it.

The strategy is an energy-saving form of attraction, but it is not magic. A prey animal must detect the lure, approach closely enough and remain within the anglerfish’s strike zone. Water movement, prey behavior and the visibility of the light all affect the outcome.

The strike is usually gape-and-suck feeding

When prey reaches the right position, many anglerfish use a gape-and-suck attack. Smithsonian explains that rapid jaw expansion creates suction, drawing water and prey into the mouth. The movement can be extremely fast relative to the slow display of the lure: attraction brings the target close, then the mouth provides the decisive capture mechanism.

Large mouths and teeth help retain prey after the suction event. In a habitat where meals may be rare, the ability to engulf a substantial target can make a single successful encounter valuable. This capture method is common among the anglerfish described by Smithsonian, but “common” is not the same as universal across every lophiiform lineage.

Why “all anglerfish have a glowing fishing rod” is wrong

Lophiiformes includes deep- and shallow-water species with different ecologies. Smithsonian notes shallow-water groups that attract prey with chemical cues or by mimicking prey rather than using a bioluminescent esca. Some details of lure function in particular groups, including sea toads, remain uncertain. A safe statement is that many deep-sea anglerfish use an esca on an illicium, often with bacterial light, while the order as a whole is more diverse.

NOAA Ocean Exploration listed 167 deep-sea anglerfish species in 11 families on its “Fishes of the Midnight Zone” page, published in 2012. That is a historical count from that page, not a current global taxonomic census.

Direct comparison: attraction versus a range of tactics

Feeding question Many deep-sea anglerfish Other deep-sea fish strategies
How is prey located? An esca is positioned in front of the mouth and often attracts prey toward the predator. Some anglerfish lineages use different lure functions (Smithsonian Ocean; 2025 review). Species may search actively, wait in ambush, detect mechanical or chemical cues, use light to reveal prey or combine several methods (Drazen and Sutton, 2017; 2025 review).
What role does light play? Many deep-sea forms use symbiotic bacteria in the esca to produce lure light. The light is part of an attraction device, not a universal anglerfish trait. Bioluminescence may illuminate prey, signal, camouflage or support sensing. A photophore or luminous barbel is not necessarily a lure.
How is prey captured? Many use a gape-and-suck strike: jaw expansion generates suction, then teeth and the mouth retain the prey (Smithsonian Ocean). Capture can involve suction, a large gape, teeth, expandable jaws or other specialized structures. The exact combination differs among feeding guilds.
Where does the energy saving occur? The fish can remain relatively still while the lure performs much of the initial detection and approach work. Energy savings may come from ambush, slow searching, efficient sensory detection or a low-cost light and capture system; no single method applies to all species.
How strong is the behavioral evidence? The lure, esca and suction strike are documented in institutional explanations, but species-level variation remains. For many mesopelagic fishes, direct feeding observations are limited, so proposed functions should be distinguished from behaviors observed repeatedly in the field.

Examples that show why the broad category matters

Dragonfishes and luminous chin barbels

Dragonfishes illustrate a deep-sea solution that is not the anglerfish fishing-rod design. NOAA describes luminous chin barbels: thread-like structures near the mouth that can help a fish investigate its immediate surroundings. Their position and light production demonstrate that a deep-sea fish can use a luminous appendage without being an anglerfish or using an esca on an illicium.

Photophores that illuminate prey

Some fishes carry photophores that cast light in front of the animal. If that light exposes a prey item, the predator may improve its chance of detecting or intercepting it. The function differs from an anglerfish esca that is presented as an object for prey to approach. Both involve bioluminescence, but the information flow is opposite: one can reveal a target to the predator, while the other can draw a target toward the predator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large-gape predators

Other deep-sea fishes depend less on a visible attraction device and more on a mouth that can engulf a scarce opportunity. A large gape, recurved teeth or a flexible jaw can compensate for low encounter rates by making the final strike effective. These fish may use ambush or sensory detection before the mouth opens; the mouth itself is the capture adaptation, not necessarily the prey-finding mechanism.

What the comparison means in ecological terms

The difference is primarily about where the work happens in the feeding sequence.

  • Search-based strategies spend more energy locating prey but can cover a larger area when prey is detectable.
  • Ambush strategies reduce cruising costs and depend on prey passing close enough for a short attack.
  • Illumination or sensory strategies improve detection without requiring a long pursuit, although the signal can have costs and trade-offs.
  • Anglerfish attraction shifts part of the locating task to the esca: a lure is displayed, often with bacterial light, and the predator waits for a target to approach.
  • Capture adaptations such as suction, large gapes and teeth determine whether the final encounter succeeds, regardless of how the prey was found.

These are not mutually exclusive boxes. An anglerfish still needs sensory information to judge distance and timing, and a non-anglerfish predator may use a brief flash of light while ambushing. The most accurate description identifies the dominant tactic for the species being discussed instead of assigning one behavior to every deep-sea fish.

Common misconceptions to avoid

“Deep-sea fish all wait for prey”

Some do use ambush, but reviews describe active searching, sensory detection, light-assisted tactics and several feeding guilds. Treating waiting as universal erases important differences in body form and ecology.

“All anglerfish live in the deep sea”

Many well-known anglerfish are deep-sea species, yet Lophiiformes also contains shallow-water relatives. Their lures and feeding environments can differ.

“Every anglerfish lure glows”

Many deep-sea escae glow because of symbiotic bacteria, but shallow-water relatives may use chemical attraction or prey mimicry, and not every lure description supports the same mechanism.

“Any bioluminescent organ is a fishing lure”

Fish use light for multiple purposes, including signaling, camouflage and illuminating prey. A luminous chin barbel or photophore should not be renamed an esca unless the anatomy and behavior support that identification.

“The species count on a web page is current”

The figure of 167 species in 11 families comes from NOAA’s page published in 2012. Taxonomy changes, so quote the date whenever using that number.

How scientists describe what is still uncertain

Direct observation is unusually difficult in the deep sea. Bringing a fish to the surface can alter pressure, temperature and behavior, while cameras may capture only a small number of feeding events. The 2025 mesopelagic-fish review therefore separates documented traits from inferred functions and notes that data remain limited for many species.

When reading a claim about a deep-sea feeder, ask three questions: Was the behavior observed in the animal’s habitat? Is the statement about a particular species or an entire order? Is a structure’s proposed function established, or inferred from anatomy and laboratory work? These distinctions prevent a dramatic adaptation from being generalized beyond the evidence.
