A dedicated media server is a computer or compatible device assigned to run media-server software and make a personal media library available to other devices. The host running the software is the server; a television, phone, tablet, or other playback device connects as a client. “Dedicated” describes the host’s role, not a special kind of appliance.

What makes a media server “dedicated”?

The defining feature is its job: the device runs server software that organizes or shares media for playback elsewhere. It may be a computer set aside for that purpose, an everyday computer also used for other tasks, or a compatible network-attached storage device (NAS). Plex’s setup guidance describes both everyday and dedicated computers as possible hosts, along with compatible NAS devices (Plex setup guides).

“Dedicated” therefore does not mean that the device must be a purpose-built server or that it can do nothing else. It means the device is allocated to, or configured for, media serving. Plex’s compatibility guidance says to check that the selected computer or NAS supports the intended use (Plex Media Server Requirements).

How the server, storage, and playback devices fit together

A media-server setup has two distinct functions: a host runs the server application, and storage holds the media files. One device can perform both jobs, but they do not have to be combined. A NAS can run the server software and store files, or it can act only as network storage while a separate computer runs the application. Plex says a NAS used only to store media has no special Plex requirement; its capacity and suitability for the library matter, while the separate host must be compatible with the server software (Plex guidance on NAS use).

  • Server: the computer or device running media-server software.
  • Media storage: a drive or NAS containing the music, films, shows, or other files.
  • Client: a television, phone, computer, or other device requesting playback.

When the server and storage are on different devices, the server needs network access to the files. Clients also need a connection to the server, and their ability to play a file depends on supported media formats and the way the server delivers it.

Common ways to host one

Approach How it works What to check
Dedicated or repurposed computer A supported computer runs the server application; media may be stored on that computer or elsewhere. Plex supports Windows, macOS, and Linux computers, among other platforms (Plex setup guides). Operating-system compatibility, processor capability for the expected workload, number of concurrent viewers, storage location, network access, and power needs.
NAS running the server A compatible NAS combines network storage and server hosting in one device. Check the exact model, processor architecture and performance, and whether it can handle any required transcoding. NAS models differ; the name “NAS” alone does not establish that a device can run the software or serve the intended workload.
NAS used only for storage The NAS holds media files while a separate computer runs server software. Check storage capacity and network access to the files, plus compatibility and performance of the separate server host.

The best arrangement depends on software compatibility, library size, client playback support, expected simultaneous streams, transcoding needs, and whether playback must work remotely. There is no universally best host for every setup.

What affects performance?

The workload—not the “dedicated” label—determines how capable the host needs to be. Plex says its CPU needs depend on the apps connecting, the media’s properties, the number of simultaneous users, and transcoding (Plex CPU guidance).

Direct playback and transcoding

When a client can play a file in its existing format, the server may be able to send it without converting the video. Transcoding converts content on the fly to suit a client or available bandwidth, and that conversion increases the processing demand. If a NAS cannot transcode, the media formats need to match what the clients can play. For remote playback, the internet connection’s upload capacity must also be sufficient for the media’s bitrate. Plex explains these NAS and transcoding considerations in its NAS guidance.

Simultaneous viewers

Each additional viewer adds work, particularly when the server is delivering video. A machine that handles one stream may not handle several streams equally well, especially if one or more require transcoding. Plex’s setup documentation notes that more simultaneous viewers make the server work harder (Plex setup guides).

Hardware guidance is software-specific

Plex’s general minimum recommendation is an Intel Core i3 or equivalent, but Plex also cautions that multiple users and transcoding can call for more powerful hardware (Plex CPU guidance). This is Plex guidance, not a universal minimum for every media-server application. For a NAS, Plex warns that many consumer models have limited CPUs and that most ARM models do not support video transcoding; check the exact model against the workload rather than assuming NAS capability (Plex requirements).

Does a dedicated media server need DLNA?

No. DLNA is one method for sharing media across a local network, not a requirement for every media server. Synology describes its Media Server as a DLNA-compliant Digital Media Server that streams multimedia from indexed folders to devices on the same network (Synology Media Server specifications). Plex also offers DLNA functionality alongside its other server features (Plex DLNA documentation). The available connection methods and setup depend on the particular software and playback devices.

How to decide whether a host is suitable

  1. Choose the server software first. Confirm which operating systems and device models it supports.
  2. List the clients and media. Check whether the televisions, phones, or other players can handle the formats in your library.
  3. Estimate the workload. Account for the number of people likely to stream at once and whether files will need transcoding.
  4. Choose where files will live. Storage may be in the server host, on a NAS that also runs the server, or on a separate NAS used only for files.
  5. Check network requirements. Ensure the server can access the storage and clients can reach the server. Remote streaming also depends on sufficient upload bandwidth for the media bitrate.
  6. Verify the exact hardware. For a NAS, check model compatibility and processor capability; for a computer, check supported operating system and performance for the expected workload.
