Managed dedicated hosting shifts specified server-administration tasks to the provider; unmanaged dedicated hosting leaves most work above the hardware layer to you. The right choice depends on which tasks the provider actually agrees to handle and whether your team can reliably cover the rest.
What changes between managed and unmanaged hosting?
The main difference is operational responsibility, not the dedicated server itself. In an unmanaged arrangement, the provider may supply and maintain the physical machine and network while you administer its operating system and software. A managed plan transfers some of that administration to the provider, but its exact scope varies by company and tier.
For example, UnderHost says its unmanaged dedicated service includes data-center infrastructure, connectivity, power and cooling, hardware replacement for component failures, and initial OS installation. The customer handles work above the hardware layer, including OS updates, software installation, security patches, backups, firewall configuration, performance monitoring, and troubleshooting. UnderHost’s service documentation describes that division of work.

There is no universal checklist implied by the word. A provider may manage monitoring and patching but leave application support or certain administrative tasks to you. Check the scope for the specific server and tier rather than relying on the label.

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
Monitoring and incident response
Ask what the provider monitors, what conditions trigger action, whether it will fix the issue or only notify you, and what response commitment applies. “24/7 monitoring” alone does not explain the remedy, response time, or whether the service is a guaranteed SLA.
Updates, security, and configuration
Confirm whether OS and security updates are applied, who configures the firewall, and whether software installation or custom stack setup is covered. Also ask whether routine maintenance can cause downtime and how changes are coordinated.

- Durability: Made of high quality cold rolled steel holds up to 110lb (50kg) (Easy Assembly Required)
- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
Backups and restores
Verify whether backups are included, their frequency, storage location and capacity, retention period, and who performs a restore. Namecheap’s Complete management example describes weekly offsite backups subject to storage limits; that is a provider- and plan-specific inclusion, not a general standard. Namecheap’s management-level documentation sets out its terms.

Access and application boundaries
Check which controls remain available to you, including root, reboot, IPMI, and control-panel access. Also distinguish server administration from help with third-party software or debugging application code; do not assume the latter is covered unless the plan says so.

How provider tiers can differ
Published examples show why “managed” needs to be unpacked. UnderHost’s page, marked updated June 2026, lists two management add-ons. Both include 24/7 monitoring, security patching, and incident response, while their additional work and prices differ. These are UnderHost’s listed terms, not industry averages.
| UnderHost add-on example | Listed scope | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| cPanel management | 24/7 monitoring, security patching, incident response, and panel administration | $59.95/month |
| Bare Metal / Windows management | 24/7 monitoring, security patching, incident response, custom stack setup, performance tuning, and Windows expertise | $99.95/month |
These details are from UnderHost’s management-service page, marked updated June 2026. Confirm current pricing and scope with the provider before buying.

Namecheap describes User-Responsible, Basic, and Complete management levels. For Complete, it lists work including core software changes, incident root-cause fixes, monitoring, firewall configuration, and weekly offsite backups subject to storage limits. It also says Complete customers receive reseller-level access rather than root, reboot, or IPMI privileges. See Namecheap’s terms for its management levels; they should not be assumed to apply to other providers.
Which option suits your situation?
Unmanaged may fit if your team can own server operations
Consider unmanaged hosting when you have the skills and coverage to maintain the OS and software, apply security patches, configure the firewall, monitor performance, manage backups, and troubleshoot incidents. It can also suit a team that needs administrative control and is prepared to take responsibility for that work.
Managed may fit if you need provider help with defined tasks
Consider a managed tier when you want the provider to take responsibility for particular operational tasks and your team cannot reliably cover them. Match the tier to the work you need done: a plan that handles monitoring and patching may not include panel administration, custom-stack work, or application-code support.
Neither label decides the question on its own
If you have technical staff but need after-hours coverage, focus on incident response and escalation terms. If you need application debugging, confirm that it is expressly included; server management does not establish that boundary by itself. If administrative access is essential, check which privileges the plan grants before signing.
Quick Recap
How to compare offers before you commit
- List your required tasks. Write down who will own OS updates, security patching, software installation, firewall configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, backups, and restores.
- Map each task to a named party. Ask the provider to identify what it performs, what it only advises on, and what remains your responsibility.
- Get incident terms in writing. Clarify monitoring coverage, escalation path, response commitment, and whether incident resolution is included or separately charged.
- Verify backup and access details. Record backup frequency, capacity, retention, restore process and charges, plus root, reboot, IPMI, and panel privileges.
- Check exclusions and extra fees. Ask about third-party software, application-code debugging, custom configurations, and hourly or incident charges outside the included scope.
- Compare the real operating cost. Add the management charge and any likely out-of-scope fees to the staff time and coverage needed for work your team retains.
Questions to ask the provider
- Which operating systems, software, and security updates are included, and how are maintenance windows handled?
- What exactly is monitored, and what action follows an alert?
- What response commitment applies to incidents, and is resolution included?
- Are backups included? Where are they stored, how much capacity and retention are provided, and who restores them?
- Will we have root, reboot, IPMI, and control-panel access on this tier?
- Does support cover third-party applications or application code, or only the server and core services?
- What work is excluded, and what are the fees for out-of-scope requests?
