To diagnose a SCIM provisioning failure, read the HTTP status and JSON error body together. The status tells you the HTTP outcome; the optional scimType narrows the protocol-level problem; and detail provides a human-readable clue that may vary by provider. For cursor-based pagination, the newer invalidCursor keyword identifies an invalid cursor value.
What a SCIM error response contains
RFC 7644 §3.12 requires SCIM errors to be returned in a JSON response body, in addition to an HTTP response code. The body is identified by the schema URI urn:ietf:params:scim:api:messages:2.0:Error. Its fields have distinct roles:
| Field | What it means | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
status |
The HTTP response status code represented as a JSON string. | Required |
scimType |
An optional SCIM error keyword that helps classify the problem. | Optional |
detail |
Human-readable information about the error. Wording is not standardized across providers. | Optional |
For example, this schematic response shows the shape of an error. Its detail text is illustrative, not a required phrase:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems{
"schemas": ["urn:ietf:params:scim:api:messages:2.0:Error"],
"status": "400",
"scimType": "invalidValue",
"detail": "A provider-specific explanation of the invalid value"
}
In a well-formed response, the JSON status matches the HTTP status line. If the body is missing, malformed, or inconsistent with that line, record what the service actually returned and consult its documentation; the standards do not define a special interpretation for those discrepancies. RFC 7644 §3.12 and the RFC Editor’s errata for RFC 7644 are useful references when checking response examples.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to interpret common SCIM error keywords
RFC 7644 associates its SCIM detail error types with HTTP 400 responses and specifies which operations each type applies to. A keyword is useful only in that context: it is optional, and its applicability is not universal across endpoints.
scimType |
How to use it when diagnosing |
|---|---|
invalidFilter |
Check filter syntax and whether the attribute and comparison combination is supported. |
tooMany |
Use the RFC’s operation-specific applicability rather than assuming the keyword applies to every request. |
uniqueness |
Investigate a uniqueness constraint on the relevant data. |
mutability |
Check whether the request attempts a change that the attribute’s mutability rules do not permit. |
invalidSyntax |
Inspect the request for syntax that the service cannot parse. |
invalidPath |
Check the path used to address an attribute or resource. |
noTarget |
Check whether the operation’s target can be found in the context defined by the RFC. |
invalidValue |
Validate the supplied value against the attribute’s allowed form and schema constraints. |
invalidVers |
Review version-related request conditions and headers. |
sensitive |
Consult the RFC’s operation applicability and the service’s response details before inferring what data triggered the error. |
These keywords are protocol classifications, not complete diagnoses. For example, invalidFilter can point to malformed filter syntax or an unsupported attribute/filter comparison combination. uniqueness and mutability describe different constraints and call for different checks. Use the operation-specific table in RFC 7644 §3.12 to interpret a keyword; do not assume every HTTP 400 includes scimType.

What the HTTP status adds
A 400 generally means the request is unparsable, syntactically incorrect, or violates the schema. Other HTTP statuses signal different outcomes, so the number alone is not enough to identify the cause. Consider the request method and endpoint, conditional headers, permissions, whether the resource exists, and the request body alongside the response fields.

What changed for cursor pagination
RFC 9865, published in October 2025, adds cursor-based pagination to SCIM and updates RFCs 7643 and 7644. It adds invalidCursor for an invalid cursor value. For pagination errors such as an invalid cursor or count, the RFC says a service provider should return the appropriate HTTP status and detailed JSON error response described by RFC 7644 §3.12.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Capture the response. Record the HTTP status line, request method, endpoint, and response body as received.
- Check the JSON structure. Confirm the body is JSON and inspect whether
schemascontainsurn:ietf:params:scim:api:messages:2.0:Error. - Compare status values. Check that the HTTP status line agrees with the required body
statusstring. - Interpret the keyword in context. If
scimTypeis present, match it to RFC 7644’s error table and the operation being performed. - Use detail as a clue. Treat
detailas the server’s explanation, not as standardized wording. - Inspect the relevant request conditions. Depending on the operation and error, check syntax, schema and attribute constraints, filters and paths, conditional version headers, or pagination parameters.
- Check provider-specific guidance. If the response appears proprietary or does not fit the standard vocabulary, consult the documentation for the identity provider and service provider involved. The RFCs do not establish vendor-specific mappings.
- Validate examples before reusing them. RFC Editor errata identify errors in RFC 7644 examples. Check both JSON syntax and consistency between the HTTP status and body status before copying a sample into a test or implementation.
