Deck of Haunts supports adjustable difficulty, a separate escalating Nightmare Mode, full controller support, mouse-only play, and a broad set of visual, audio, and input options. Steam lists the game as Steam Deck Verified. The standard difficulty selector is adjustable, but the official store material does not publish a complete list of preset names such as Easy, Normal, or Hard.
This guide explains what each confirmed setting does, how the control options differ, what changed in the 2026 updates, and how the Steam and console editions compare.
What difficulty options are confirmed?
Adjustable Difficulty
The Steam store lists Adjustable Difficulty as a gameplay accessibility feature. That confirms that players can change the challenge level, but the published Steam description does not identify every standard preset or give an Easy/Normal/Hard table. Do not assume those names exist or that the selector works as a fixed three-step scale.

Use the difficulty control shown in the game’s own settings menu, and check its current description before starting a run. If you need an exact explanation of a slider or preset, the in-game text is the authoritative reference for the installed build.

Nightmare Mode
Nightmare Mode is a separate challenge structure, not merely a claim that the normal difficulty slider is set high. The official October 2026 announcement describes it as 13 escalating Nightmares of 13 nights each, with accumulating modifiers and new threats. In practical terms, a Nightmare run is organized into repeated 13-night challenges; as the sequence advances, the modifiers remain part of the escalating pressure and additional threats are introduced.
Because the announcement does not publish a full modifier-by-modifier list, the exact threats and rule changes should be read from the Nightmare selection and run screens in your version. Treat Nightmare as an optional high-challenge mode rather than as the name of a conventional difficulty preset.
Which control methods can you use?
Controller
Steam lists Full Controller Support. The September 2026 official updates expanded controller coverage beyond basic navigation:
- Camera rotation uses the left joystick horizontally while you hold R3.
- Building-preview movement was made smoother.
- Holding the select button allows multi-tile building.
- Cards received controller tooltips.
- The gameplay log became accessible from a controller.
- Menu navigation was broadened.
These notes describe supported actions, not a complete button chart. For the exact binding on your controller, open the game’s controls screen. A later update also fixed key-binding saving, so recheck custom assignments after updating if a previous configuration did not persist.

Mouse and keyboard
The Steam listing includes a Mouse Only Option, allowing play without a keyboard for pointer-driven interaction. Keyboard users can use the game’s configurable bindings; the official update feed specifically records a fix for saving key bindings. Since the developers have not published a complete action-by-action chart on the store page, consult the in-game controls screen for the current command names and keys.
Mouse-only play is useful when keyboard reach or simultaneous key presses are uncomfortable. It does not mean every possible action is exposed identically on every platform, so confirm the available prompts in the installed version before relying on a single input device.
Accessibility settings on Steam
Steam groups the confirmed accessibility options into seven categories. The labels below use the wording shown on the store listing; the practical effects describe what each category is intended to address without assuming undocumented sub-options.

Text size and brightness
The official update feed says a brightness slider was added. It also records a correction to text scaling across gameplay cards, room tooltips, logs, collection screens, and unlock screens. A practical setup is to raise text size and brightness before beginning a long run, then adjust them again from the settings menu if a particular screen remains hard to read.

Subtitles, camera comfort, and sound
Subtitle options are confirmed on Steam, but the store listing does not enumerate every subtitle mode or style. Camera comfort is likewise a category rather than a published list of individual toggles. Start with the available comfort controls enabled conservatively, and change one option at a time so you can identify which presentation is most comfortable. Custom volume controls let you tune the game’s audio rather than relying only on a single master-volume slider.
Playing without timed input
The “Playable without timed input” option is important if fast reactions are difficult, fatiguing, or inaccessible. It indicates that the game can be configured so progress does not depend on completing a timed input window. The exact interactions affected are not itemized on the Steam page, so read the setting’s description in the current build.
What does the PlayStation edition add to its accessibility labels?
The PlayStation Store listing labels Adjustable Difficulty (Basic), Control Reminders, Tutorial Reminders, and Game Pausing. It also says that players can review controls at any time.

Is Deck of Haunts Steam Deck Verified?
Yes. The Steam page lists Steam Deck Verified. That is Valve’s compatibility designation for the Steam version; it does not by itself describe battery life, performance settings, font legibility, or whether every player will find the camera comfortable. On Deck, open the game’s controls and accessibility menus just as you would on a desktop, then set text size, brightness, subtitles, and input method for the smaller display.
Which consoles are announced?
The official October 2026 announcement lists versions for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with an announced launch date of October 8, 2026. The announcement is the basis for the platform list and date; storefront availability, regional release timing, and feature parity should be verified on the relevant console store.
The announcement also highlights Nightmare Mode and the Grim Reaper alongside the 13 escalating Nightmares. That wording confirms the mode’s place in the announced console feature set, but it does not provide a separate console-specific difficulty matrix.

Recommended setup paths
If you need the least time pressure
- Open the game’s settings before starting a run.
- Set Adjustable Difficulty to a level you can manage.
- Enable Playable without timed input.
- Turn on subtitles if text is easier to process than audio.
- Review the controls screen and confirm that every required action is available with your preferred input device.
If small or low-contrast UI is the problem
- Increase Adjustable text size.
- Raise brightness with the brightness slider added in the official update.
- Check a gameplay card, room tooltip, log entry, collection screen, and unlock screen; text scaling was specifically corrected across these areas.
- Adjust custom volume controls and subtitles so important feedback is not lost in background audio.
If you prefer a gamepad
- Connect the controller before launching or from the game’s input settings.
- Open the controls screen and verify the current bindings rather than relying on a generic controller diagram.
- Practice camera rotation: hold R3 while moving the left joystick horizontally.
- Test building-preview movement and multi-tile building by holding the select button.
- Open the gameplay log and a card to confirm that controller navigation and tooltips work as expected.
If you prefer a mouse only
- Select the Mouse Only Option in the input or accessibility settings.
- Move through a short tutorial or low-stakes section to confirm that all required prompts can be completed with the pointer.
- Keep the controls screen available in case a particular action still requests a keyboard or controller input in your build.
Common problems and fixes
“I cannot find an Easy mode.”
The official Steam material confirms adjustable difficulty but does not publish a complete preset list. Look for the adjustable setting in the game menu instead of searching for a guaranteed Easy label.

“My controller rotates the camera unexpectedly.”
The updated camera behavior uses the left joystick horizontally while R3 is held. Check that combination on the controls screen and review any custom bindings if the behavior differs.
“My custom keys reset.”
An official update addressed key-binding saving. Update the game, rebind the keys, save from the controls menu, and restart once to confirm that the assignments persist.
“Text is still hard to read after changing the size.”
Increase both text size and brightness, then check cards, tooltips, logs, collection, and unlock screens individually. The update feed specifically mentions corrected scaling in those interfaces, so a restart after updating can also help ensure the fix is active.

“The console menu does not match Steam.”
Platform labels are not guaranteed to be identical. On PlayStation, look for Adjustable Difficulty (Basic), Control Reminders, Tutorial Reminders, and Game Pausing; on other consoles, use that platform’s current accessibility and controls menus.
Language support on Steam
SteamDB records interface and subtitle support for English, Japanese, French, German, Simplified Chinese, Dutch, Spanish (Spain), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Traditional Chinese, and Korean. Language availability can be separated by interface and subtitles, so check the Steam language panel for the exact combination you need rather than assuming that every listed language includes full voice support.
Bottom line for choosing a setup
Choose Steam if you want the documented combination of mouse-only play, configurable keyboard input, full controller support, the broad seven-category accessibility list, and Steam Deck Verified status. Choose a console edition if you prefer the announced Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S versions and a gamepad-first interface. Whichever platform you use, start by adjusting text size, brightness, subtitles, camera comfort, volume, and timed-input options before attempting Nightmare Mode; the 13-by-13-night structure is designed as an escalating challenge, not as the game’s default accessibility setting.
